*'Bathed in light, submerged in sound and rapt in feeling, the sentient
body, at once both perceiver and producer, traces the paths of the world's
becoming in the very course of contributing to its ongoing renewal'* (Ingold
2011: 12).



Drawing from experiential approaches in the social sciences, this
conference springs forth from the premise that we are co-creating the world
as we study it. We therefore aim to explore research from the inside out;
pushing the boundaries of where research begins, ends, and interacts with
the environment it comes out of. In order to do so, we invite participants
from all disciplines to share their experiences of research in its many
stages and entanglements. Researchers who wish to reflexively speak to
their positioning within research, disciplines, or theory are especially
welcome. Both faculty and student researchers are encouraged to apply. This
theme also welcomes discussion on the concepts of perception, embodiment,
multiplicity, ambiguity, and applied research. This includes, but is not
limited to, subjects in sociology & anthropology, political science,
environmental studies, communications, studies of science, health,
development, psychology, philosophy, history, education, music and art.



*Interactive Event: Nuit Blanche*

*Monday April 16th 9:00pm- Midnight*

A major event of the conference, *The Nuit Blanche,* is an innovating
research exposition that will engage students, professors and members of
the general public alike. Presenters will be allotted space to explore real
research with the audience through movement, materials, polyphony and art,
photo displays, video projctions, etc. The presentation spaces will be
architectured so as to form paths through which members of the audience can
find their way. Through this innovative event, along with other
presentation and discussion formats in the conference, we hope to immerse
ourselves in living research and its meaningful reverberations.



Note: Conference participation and attendance is free.

*Submission Guidelines***



Submissions must include a publication-ready, titled abstract of
200-250 words. Participants should *clearly indicate which type of
presentation* they would like to give, in either French or English (maximum
number of submissions is two). The name, e-mail address, university
affiliation and program of the presenter(s) must also be included, along
with any special needs. Proposals are to be submitted no later than
February 25th 2013. We will notify the accepted presenters by the 11th of

*Types of Presentation*

*Pecha Kucha*

The Pecha Kucha is a fast-paced style of presentation intended to profile
research in a concise and engaging way. Each presenter will have 20
PowerPoint slides automated at 20 seconds per slide (i.e. 6 minutes to
present) and are encouraged to draw from images rather than text. The goal
is to encourage discussion rather than formal critique. A 15 minute
informal discussion period will follow each series of Pecha Kucha
presentations.



*Nuit Blanche**

Imagine presenting a glimpse of your research as an installation,
something which you showcase to the public. You can stand beside it,
interact with it, be part of it, embody it, speak with your audience, or
leave the piece to speak for itself. Presentations can be done individually
or collaboratively. Art, performance, music, visual displays , the use of
multi-media equipment, the presentation of materials and methodological
demonstrations are all welcome. The audience will be walking around to take
in these installations, therefore they should either last at least 5-10
minutes and occur at least 5-6 times throughout the night or be ongoing.
There is no limit to your creativity here, minor or major aspects of your
research are welcome.

*A list of requirements for space, media equipment, tables and other
materials should be included with the abstract. A special team of
volunteers will help to set up and accommodate these installation
requirements.



*Panel Presentation*

In this conventional style of academic presentation, participants have 15
minutes to present their research *and answer questions* from discussants
and audience members. We expect presentations to last 10-12minutes. All
presenters who choose to do a panel presentation must submit their 5-7 page
paper by April 5th, 2013.



A committee will be inviting select participants to contribute publications
towards a student journal of the department

S'inspirant d'approches expérientielles en sciences sociales, cette
conférence jaillit de la notion que nous contribuons à la création du monde
tout en l'étudiant. Nous souhaitons explorer la recherche de bord en bord,
poussant les limites à savoir où elle commence, jusqu'où elle s'étend et
comment elle interagie avec l'environnement. Afin d'y parvenir, nous
invitons des participants de toutes les disciplines à explorer l'expérience
de la recherche en ses multiples étapes et entrelacements. Les chercheurs
voulant parler réflexivement au sujet de leurs positionnements dans la
recherche, leurs disciplines et leurs communautés sont particulièrement
bienvenus. Professeurs et étudiants sont invités à soumettre leurs
propositions. Ce thème invite aussi des discussions autour des thèmes de
la perception, de l'intersubjectivité, de l'incarnation, de l'ambiguïté et
de la recherche appliquée, etc. Cela inclut, sans ne s'y limiter, des
sujets provenant de divers domaines, notamment en anthropologie,
sociologie, sciences politiques, études environnementales, communications,
sciences pures, santé, développement international, psychologie,
philosophie, histoire, éducation, musique et arts.



*Évènement Intéractif: Nuit Blanche*

Un évènement clé de la conférence sera la Nuit Blanche, une exposition de
recherche innovante qui engagera les conférenciers avec leurs auditoires,
dont des étudiants, professeurs et membres du public. Les exposants seront
alloués un espace pour explorer leur recherche avec l'audience à travers
des mouvements, des matériaux, la polyphonie et l'art, la photo, le vidéo,
etc. Les espaces de présentation seront architecturés de façon à former des
trajectoires à travers desquels les membres de l'audience pourront trouver
leur chemin. À travers la Nuit Blanche et les autres évènements de la
conférence, nous espérons nous immerger dans la recherche vivante et ses
réverbérations significatives.



Veuillez noter que l'accès à la conférence est gratuit.

associations étudiantes du premier cycle et des cycles superieurs ainsi que
par la Communauté Anthropologique Étudiante d'Ottawa.

Les propositions et les présentations peuvent être en français ou en
anglais. Vous êtes prié(e)s de nous faire parvenir, par courriel, le titre
de votre présentation, de même qu'un résumé de 200 à 250 mots prêt à
publier, indiquant clairement le type de présentation sélectionné. Chaque
proposition doit contenir les renseignements suivants: nom, adresse,
numéros de téléphone, addresse électronique, l'institution à laquelle
l'auteur est affilié, le niveau d'étude et, si le besoin y est, le matériel
audiovisuel nécessaire pour la présentation. Vous devez nous faire parvenir
vos propositions avant le 25 février 2012. Les conférenciers retenus seront

*Types de presentations*

*Pecha Kucha*

Pecha Kucha est un type de presentation rapide qui fait le survol d'une
recherche de façon concise et engageante. Chaque conférencier disposera de
20 diapositives PowerPoint, chacune d'une durée de 20 secondes (6 minutes,
40 secondes en tout) pour effectuer sa présentation. Les diapositives
devraient s'appuyer d'image plus que de texte. Le but est d'encourager la
conversation. Une discussion informelle suivera les présentations.



*Nuit Blanche*

Imaginez la Nuit Blanche comme le vernissage d'une installation
qui évoque votre recherche. Vous pouvez interagir avec votre installation
et l'audience comme vous voulez. Les présentations peuvent être individuels
ou en groupe, et peuvent employer l'art, la performance, la musique, les
médias audio-visuels, les matériaux de recherche, démonstrations
méthodologiques, etc. L'audience circulera autour de ces installations donc
les présentations devraient soit durer au moins 5-10 minutes et se répéter
5-6 fois, ou bien être à développement continu. Il n'y a aucune limite à
votre créativité!



* SVP Inclure une liste de besoins d'espace, d'équipement audio-visuel, de
tables et d'autres matériaux dans le courriel avec lequel vous soumettez
votre résumé de présentation. Une équipe de bénévoles spéciale aideront les
conférenciers selon leurs besoin le soir-même de l'évènement.



*Présentation Panel*

Cette présentation sera de style conventionnel. Les
participants auront 15 minutes pour présenter leur recherche ainsi que
répondre à des questions de discutants et de l'audience. Chaque
présentation devrait durer de 10-12 minutes, laissant ainsi quelques
minutes pour discuter. Les présentateurs de panels devront soumettre leur
texte de 5-7 pages au plus tard le 5 avril, 2013.

Un comité choisira certains textes afin de les publier dans le nouveau
journal étudiant du Département de Sociologie et Anthropologie.
