CIHR-IPPH Population Health Ethics Debate & Dialogue Series
The CIHR-Institute of Population and Public Health (CIHR-IPPH)
recently launched a new initiative on population health ethics. IPPH
has previously developed an annotated
bibliography<http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/f/41872.html> of population
health ethics literature and held a virtual journal
club<http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/41873.html> to support and stimulate
discussions about the ethical foundations of population health
interventions.

The next phase of the initiative is a virtual debate & dialogue series
that aims to further advance these discussions by applying population
health ethics principles and frameworks to a select number of cases.

The series will involve six, hour and a half sessions, each focused on
a different case with real-world relevance to public health and
population health interventions. Each session will feature two
invited discussants, who will discuss their perspectives on the case
and engage each other and the participants in open dialogue to further
advance the case. One of these sessions will take place in French,
while the rest will be held in English.

The "virtual" nature of these sessions means that all one needs is a
telephone and internet connection to participate and no travel is
required. Each participant will be asked to commit to, prepare for,
and attend a minimum of three of the six sessions. Registration is on
a first-come, first-served basis.

Funding Opportunities, Grants, and Awards

IPPH funding opportunities can be found
here<http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/srch.do?view=search>
by selecting the Institute of Population and Public Health under the
CIHR Institute** dropdown menu.

As you may be aware, the Institutes of Population and Public Health
and Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) recently undertook an
evaluation of the intervention research funding opportunity to examine
the relevance of this funding mechanism and outcomes of the funded
research from 2006-2010 within the broader Canadian population health
intervention research landscape. In order to take full advantage of
these evaluation findings and additional feedback we've received from
the research community about this funding mechanism, we are delaying
the third launch of the Intervention Research Funding Opportunity to
sometime in the New Year. Further updates about the next launch date
will be provided as soon as this information is available. We
apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If you have any
questions, please contact Kim Gaudreau at
Kim.Gaudreau@cihr-irsc.gc.ca<mailto:Kim.Gaudreau@cihr-irsc.gc.ca> or

Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships Program

The Government of Canada allocated $45 million over five years in
Budget 2010 to establish a high-profile, prestigious Postdoctoral
Fellowships Program. The fellowships will be known as the Banting
Postdoctoral Fellowships, in memory of Sir Frederick Banting, the
Canadian physician, researcher, Nobel laureate and war hero who,
together with his assistant Dr. Charles Best, is credited with the
discovery of insulin. The program is jointly administered by Canada's
three federal granting agencies: the Canadian Institutes of Health

IRSC;
* appuyer des organismes et des activités dont les buts

* cadrent avec les objectifs généraux du programme de financement;
* répondent à une ou à plusieurs des priorités stratégiques de
l'Institut (énumérées ci-après);
* permettent d'accroître la capacité du milieu canadien de la
populations, à l'échelle nationale et internationale;
* s'inscrivent dans le prolongement des initiatives de l'ISPP ou
de la santé, Centres de développement de la recherche);
* permettent de soutenir et d'accélérer l'application de la

niveau national et international;
· Permettre à ces chercheurs de développer leur potentiel de meneurs;

chances d'entreprendre une carrière fructueuse axée sur la recherche;

*The Archaeology Channel* International Film and Video Festival

Please excuse the necessity of cross-posting.

***********************************************************************************************

Please share this message with those who might be able to make use of it.

We invite you to take advantage of a new programming option that we have
created for institutions such as yours: *TAC Festival **On the Road*. We
recently created this program as an outgrowth of *The Archaeology
Channel*International Film and Video Festival (
http://www.archaeologychannel.org/content/TACfestival.shtml), our annual
film competition that began in 2003. TAC Festival serves multiple
purposes. It fulfills our public mission to tell the human story and
promotes the genre of cultural heritage film. It's an important
fund-raising tool for us and a new source of revenue for our film-making
partners. For you, this is a new way to bring people to you and create for
them a positive and memorable experience focused on cultural legacy.

TAC Festival is the only juried international film competition in the
Western Hemisphere for this genre. It is one of the leading
archaeology-related film festivals in the world and attracts worldwide
attention among film makers and distributors. For TAC Festival 2010, which
took place May 18-22 in Eugene, Oregon, we received 100 film entries from 32
countries. We screened 19 of these for the competition and selected the
best seven films for the new *On the Road* series. You have an opportunity
through this series to bring to your audience the world's best films.

Here is how it works. We have grouped these seven films into four programs
of approximately two hours each. You can select just one, two, three, or
all four programs to exhibit at your venue and present them on your own
schedule in any order you want. We are happy to work with you if you want
to combine the films in some other way. We provide you with all the tools
you need to hold the event. If you want, you can sell tickets to the show
and use the event as a fund-raiser, or you can simply screen the programs
for no charge as part of your round of public programs. It's quite simple,
really, and you can see more details, including the film descriptions and
even clips you can watch, on our Web site at
http://www.archaeologychannel.org/content/TACFestOnRoad2010.shtml.

Please consider this invitation and get back to us if you have some level
of interest. We hope to receive feedback from many organizations to help us
improve this program and the information tools we have prepared for it.
Please direct your responses to our Marketing Specialist, Howard Yang (
howard@archaeologychannel.org<http://us.mc511.mail.yahoo.com/mc/compose?to=howard@archaeologychannel.org>).

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Conference Objectives

The concept of social vulnerability has been associated with a number
of factors that bind the socio-economic, environmental, cultural and
psychological connected to exposure of poorer social groups to risks
in areas of environmental degradation and lacking of public policy.
Social vulnerability refers both to these risks and to the lack of
strategies for addressing them. This workshop aims to discuss
strategies for the empowerment of residents in the areas of social
vulnerability and the implementation of public policies with a
sustainable basis, in such areas. We are interested in examining the
following issues, amongst others:

? Development of strategies for sustainable development in areas of
social vulnerability

? How the cultural, racial, sexual, ethnic diversity, etc. could be
used as a positive variable for

the construction of strategies for empowerment and for the creation of
resources for

counteracting various forms of humiliation that affect the people
living in these areas

? The development of strategies for research and creation of
indicators that can supply

policy makers with information relevant to the proposal for public policies

? Development of strategies for mobilizing resources for projects
which are focused on

these topics

? Development of strategies for training leaders for sustainable development

This workshop will be the starting point of an organization of a
network of specialists interested in pursuing the discussion about all
of these issues. We shall create a Virtual Forum for this purpose and
host another Workshop in 2012, at the University of São Paulo, São
Paulo, Brazil.

Key Workshop topics

We welcome proposals related to the following themes:

? Strategies for sustainable development in areas of social vulnerability

? Strategies for population empowerment and the elimination of
humiliations connected to social vulnerability and/or gender, age,
ethnic, race, sexual orientation and disabilities

? Children and youth care and empowerment in areas of social vulnerability

? Strategies for sustainable urbanization against flooding and other
kind of disasters due to

climate changes or lack of public policies

? Establishing indicators of social vulnerability and sustainable development

? Strategies for fundraising to assist in the development of
vulnerable areas before and after

disasters

Who should attend?

We welcome interdisciplinary approaches and proposals presented by
scholars, researchers, public policy makers, governmental
representatives and Non-Governmental Organizations.

MED ANTHRO: Cascadia Seminar march 4-6, 2011

THE CASCADIA
SEMINAR:
ETHNOGRAPHIC
ADVENTURES IN MEDICAL ANTHROPOLOGY

March 4th-6th,
2011
at the
University of
Washington
Seattle,
Washington, USA

The Cascadia Seminar is an experiment in creating a new kind of
intellectual
space for medical anthropology, here in the "Cascadia" region (i.e.,
the US Pacific Northwest and British Columbia). The Cascadia Seminar
will be a
small, intimate, high-interest, low-cost weekend conference organized
collaboratively by medical anthropologists on faculty at a number of
different
universities and colleges in the US Pacific Northwest and British
Columbia (the
Cascadia region). A small conference venue has been reserved at the
University
of Washington, to host what we hope will be the first of many such
events,
rotating among our various institutions.

Medical anthropologists (from everywhere) are invited to submit
abstracts.
Please send your abstract (350 words maximum) by November 5th,
as an electronic attachment to cascadiaseminar@gmail.com

Abstracts
will be reviewed by a committee of medical
anthropologists on faculty at our various institutions, all of whom
also plan
to attend. The committee will select seven abstracts, seeking papers
that
promise to be ethnographically rich and intellectually exciting.
Decisions will be
announced by December 20th.
The
Cascadia Seminar will begin the evening of Friday March
4th with a keynote address by Jeannette
Pols (University of Amsterdam). Four papers will be presented on
Saturday
March 5th, and three on Sunday March 6th, with no concurrent sessions.
Each
paper presenter will have forty-five minutes to present a substantial,
well
worked-out paper, with ample time for lively discussion. All
participants will
attend all papers, and optional no-host meals together will offer
additional
opportunities for conversation. The UW Anthropology department will
provide
coffee & snacks etc.
The
conference will be free
of charge, though preregistration will be required in order to keep
numbers
manageable. Some people may want to stay with family or friends in the
Seattle
area; a block of rooms will also be available at a reduced rate at a
nearby
hotel.
We
look forward to a stimulating & fun weekend!

(http://www.femmes-politique-et-democratie.com/).

***

Dr. Caron, who earned her doctoral degree in communication studies at
Concordia University, is a specialist in media discourse analysis,
women's studies, and studies on young people and the media. Her
previous research, which received support from the Social Sciences and
Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC) and the Trudeau
Foundation, is located within the domain of feminist media studies,
and has earned her two research awards. After having investigated
teenage girls' magazines and the moral panic on hypersexualization,
her research interests are currently moving from media consumption to
media production by youth. In Disengaged? Researching Girls'
Citizenship and Civic Participation, Dr Caron analyzes the meaning and
scope of Francophone adolescent girls' and young women's involvement
in the production of media content such as fanzines, radio programs,
video productions distributed on the Internet, and blogs. Dr. Caron is
also chair of the board of directors of Groupe Femmes, Politique et
Démocratie (http://www.femmes-politique-et-democratie.com/).

SfAA 2011 session: Applied, Professional and Practicing Anthropology in Canada abstracts due in 2 days

Last chance for submission to the 2011 Society for Applied Anthropology
meetings in Seattle March 29-April 2, 2011.

A special session entitled Applied, Professional and Practicing Anthropology
in Canada will be held at the meetings and SfAA organizers have extended the
submission date to the end of this week (October 22) for papers submitted to
this session. The theme of SfAA this year is 'Expanding the Influence of
Applied Social Science'. There is a 'traditional foods summit' taking place
in conjunction with the conference. It would be great to have a strong
Canadian presence.

Please forward on to any anthropologists you know who may be interested.

We are hoping this session will help build bridges between scholarly and
professional realms, and improve the currency and rigor of anthropology and
social science both inside and outside the halls of the university.

SESSION TITLE: Applied, Professional and Practicing Anthropology in Canada

SESSION DESCRIPTION: This session is intended to profile some of the diverse
work being undertaken by professional, applied and practicing
anthropologists in Canada. While many university-based scholars choose to
practice applied anthropology, a growing number of applied anthropologists
are choosing to work outside of the university system. This session will
include papers providing diverse case studies and will conclude with an open
discussion of how the quality, ethics, and influence of applied
anthropology, especially outside the university, can be improved in Canada.

Abstracts can be submitted through the SfAA web site at
http://www.sfaa.net/sfaa2011.html

Please note the session title: Applied, Professional and Practicing
Anthropology in Canada.

Invitation sp=?iso-8859-1?Q?=E9ciale_pour_le_Rendez-vous_du_CRCCF_-_Universit=E9?= d'Ottawa | University of Ottawa

Bonjour,

Il a publié, notamment, The Great Peace of Montreal
of 1701 (Mc Gill-Queen's University Press, 2001), Empire et métissages:
