European Studies
Applications are invited for a tenure-track appointment, at the Assistant
Professor level, in European Studies: Twentieth Century Continental
Thought. Candidates with a PhD in History of Thought, Comparative
Literature, Cultural Studies, Philosophy, Literature and related areas
will be given preference. The Department is particularly interested in
candidates whose work engages, from a broad and interdisciplinary
perspective, areas or topics concerning European thought, its historical
contexts and its global impact. Overall, candidatesâ™ work should be
located in the intellectual and cultural traditions of the Humanities,
while at the same time responding to contemporary critical perspectives.
Candidates should have a completed PhD in hand by the commencement of the
appointment. The successful candidate will show evidence of a vigorous
research agenda and promise of excellence in teaching. Candidates should
be able to teach in Yorkâ™s first- and second-year interdisciplinary
General Education Program, and develop and teach upper-level undergraduate
courses. They must also have the potential to undertake graduate teaching
and supervision. The successful candidate will join the Department of
Humanities and one or more of its constituent programs, such as European
Studies, Jewish Studies, and Culture and Expression. The ability to
contribute to the work of the Canadian Centre for German and European
Studies and/or other of York Universityâ™s organized research units is
desirable.
