Consultation on PHIR FAQs DRAFT 2

The Population Health Intervention Research Initiative for Canada
(PHIRIC) aims to increase the quantity, quality and use of population
health intervention research in Canada through a strategic and
deliberate alignment of initiatives by key organizations responsible
for public health research, policy and practice.

As our work has been unfolding, it's been clear that different
definitions of population health intervention research (PHIR) that is,
different takes on what it is or could be are getting in people's way.

Many thanks to colleagues who commented on Draft 1. We hope you see
improvement!

We now invite your feedback on Draft 2 of the Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs) about PHIR that were developed through an online
consultation process.

Please email Emma Cohen, CIHR-IPPH Knowledge Translation and
Communications Officer, ecohen@uottawa.ca<mailto:ecohen@uottawa.ca> to
obtain Draft 2 of the PHIR FAQs.

It will take about 15 minutes to complete this survey about the PHIR FAQs.

Please visit http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/PCFML3Y to submit your
comments before December 22nd, 2010. Thank you!

The survey is available until December 22nd, 2010. Thank you.

As you may be aware, the Institutes of Population and Public Health
and Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes (INMD) recently undertook an
evaluation of the intervention research funding opportunity to examine
the relevance of this funding mechanism and outcomes of the funded
research from 2006-2010 within the broader Canadian population health
intervention research landscape. In order to take full advantage of
these evaluation findings and additional feedback we've received from
the research community about this funding mechanism, we are delaying
the third launch of the Intervention Research Funding Opportunity to
sometime in the New Year. Further updates about the next launch date
will be provided as soon as this information is available. We

vendredi 28 janvier 2011.

Assistant Professor,
July 1, 2011 - June 30, 2013, subject to budgetary approval. The

indication of how she or he would be able to contribute to the critical
and interdisciplinary pedagogical approaches supported in CGS; a current
curriculum vitae; and available teaching evaluations.
Applicants should also arrange to have three letters of reference
submitted independently. Review of applications will begin after January
31st, 2011 and will continue after that date until a decision to hire has

About the Social Theory Forum
Department of Sociology
University of Massachusetts Boston

Histories of sociology describe how the discipline formed through
nineteenth century struggles to understand the combined upheavals of
socio-political revolutions and global expansion of the industrial
revolution. These events radically altered established orders and
posed questions that remain with us today: class, race, gender, and
processes of social change, among others. The twentieth century
brought even more tumultuous change, bringing with it great
implications for social theory.

The Social Theory Forum (STF) is an annual international conference
organized jointly by the sociology and other departments, interested
faculty and students at University of Massachusetts Boston, in order
to creatively explore, develop, promote, and publish
cross-disciplinary social theory in an applied and critical framework.
STF offers faculty and students of UMass Boston and other national and
international colleges and universities an interactive medium to
discuss various aspects of the way in which particular theoretical
traditions can be relevant to present everyday issues, as well as to
the current state and the future of social theory.

STF’s goals are:

* To critically engage with and evaluate classical and contemporary
social theories in a cross-disciplinary and comparative cross-cultural
framework in order to develop new integrative theoretical structures
and practices;
* To foster individual and collective self-reflexivity in exploring
social theories in global and world-historical contexts to aid people
effectively address social problems;
* To foster an interactive and dialogical learning experience and
research in theory within and across faculty, students, and community
divides on and off campus; and
* To foster exchange of ideas open to constructive and integrative
exploration of diverse and conflicting viewpoints, modes of thinking,
and world-views.

Nationalism and the Body Politic: Final Call for Papers

A LIBRARY OF SOCIAL SCIENCE CALL FOR PAPERS

encourage you to share your ideas and to participate in this important
event. Please send an abstract ASAP to

foreign body that must be extirpated.

CALL FOR PAPERS

We cannot, argued Gullestad in Plausible Prejudice (2006), "understand the
appeal of right-wing politics if we do not take into account how this
rhetoric is underpinned by and embedded in rearticulated neo-ethnic ideas."
She argued that politicians from other than the right-wing populist parties
have resisted specific ways of talking that are considered too extremist,
rather than their underlying frame of interpretation. Recent news stories
appear to lend support to her view: Civil rights campaigners have accused
governments, not just in France but across Europe, of adopting
anti-immigrant and anti-Roma policies to win popular support. The issue of
the so-called 'Ground Zero mosque' has caused agitation in the US. The
Sweden Democrats has been battling up in the recent elections, appealing to
hostility towards immigrants and Muslims in particular, employing the slogan
"Tradition and Security".

In relation to the Wolf-man's phantasies, where the passive role he had
played towards his sister had been envisioned as reversed, Freud (1914)
wrote that they "corresponded exactly to the legends by means of which a
nation that has become great and proud tries to conceal the insignificance
and failure of its beginnings." Given that we are witnessing a revival of
nationalist ideas, this conference poses the question of what fantasies
these give voice to. It encourages thinking about the nature of the iconic
images celebrated and to what forms of violence and what losses are
derealized within this framework of interpretation.

One might think in terms of 'cultures of fear' (Moïsi (2009) in reference to
recent developments in USA and Europe), of fantasies of fusion or 'imagined
sameness' (Gullestad). Alongside the image of the nation as a mother and/or
father, Reich (1933) called attention to the fantasy of the nation as a
body. This metaphor is echoed in Money-Kyrle's (1939) characterization of
'group hypochondria' in connection with the burning of witches and heretics;
"The Church, and State united to it, could tolerate no foreign body within
itself, and turned ferociously upon any that it found."

This is an interdisciplinary conference – we invite theoretical
contributions and historical, literary or clinical case studies on these and
related themes from philosophers, sociologists, psychoanalysts,
psychotherapists, literary theorists, historians and others. Perspectives
from different psychoanalytic schools will be most welcome. Papers must not
be previously published and must be available for publication in the planned
conference book. Presentations are expected to take half an hour; another 30
minutes is set aside for discussion.
