CIHR International Review Panel Report

The CIHR Governing Council commissioned a 10-year International Review of
CIHR, which addressed the following overarching questions:
Has CIHR been effective in fulfilling its mandate as outlined in the CIHR
Act?
How can CIHR improve at achieving its mandate?

The review was conducted by an International Review Panel chaired by Dr.
Elias Zerhouni in Ottawa.
Following the Panel's deliberations, Dr. Zerhouni has reported the
findings and recommendations to the CIHR Governing Council. The final
report was presented to the Governing Council in June 2011. Please visit
CIHR's website ( http://www.cihr.ca/e/43993.html ) to read the final
report.

Call for Cases for a New Publication: Population and Public Health Ethics
Casebook

The CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health (IPPH), together with
its partners, are pleased to announce a call for case submissions in
Population and Public Health Ethics. For more information, please visit
the IPPH Website ( http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/44006.html ) for
additional details and submission guidelines.
Fostering the development and refinement of ethical frameworks for
population health interventions in Canada and globally is a strategic
objective for the IPPH. Population and public health ethics can be
distinguished from clinical ethics by the focus on:

Populations rather than individuals;
A wide range of population-level and/or environmental interventions often
implemented outside of the health care setting or the health sector; and
Equitable prevention of disease and disability.

The CIHR-IPPH, CIHR Ethics Office, Public Health Agency of Canada-Office
of Public Health Practice, National Collaborating Centre for Healthy
Public Policy, and Public Health Ontario have partnered to develop this
casebook of ethical dilemmas in population and public health and related
case analyses. The objectives of the casebook are to:

Increase awareness and understanding of PPH ethics, and the value of
ethical thinking in population and public health research, policy, and
practice;
Highlight cases from across population and public health research, policy,
and practice that feature different ethical issues and dilemmas, and;
Create a tool to support instruction, debate, and dialogue related to
cases in population and public health ethics research, policy, and
practice.

Structured case submissions of up to 850 words are due by Friday,
September 30, 2011. Cases should be realistic (either real or a composite
based on a real situation) and can either focus on:

A particular ethical dilemma that arises in practice;
The ethical considerations of a specific population health intervention; or
How a public health organization(s) or organization in other sectors
deliberates or takes ethics into account in their priority setting or
decision-making process.

Each selected case will be peer reviewed and subsequently analyzed
according to a common approach by an invited author who is not affiliated
with the case submission authorship team. Authors of selected cases will
be given an opportunity to provide an alternative analysis and these
responses will be included in the casebook, which will be published in
Spring 2012.

Tri-Agencies Harmonizing Policies on Stipends Paid from Grants

The three federal granting agencies -- CIHR, NSERC, and SSHRC -- are
harmonizing their policies on support paid to students and postdoctoral
fellows from research grants. Beginning September 15, 2011, the agencies'
existing regulations on minimum and maximum stipend levels paid from
grants will no longer apply. The agencies will also no longer restrict
researchers from using some of their grant money to provide supplements to
scholarship holders. These changes respond to concerns expressed by
institutions and researchers about the different approaches taken by the
agencies.
The removal of tri-agency regulations will offer professors more financial
flexibility to pay students and postdoctoral fellows at levels that
reflect the variations in costs between departments and between regions.
It should be noted that stipend levels will still be governed by
applicable collective agreements and labour legislation. Also, many
universities have established minimum support packages, varying by
department, where stipend support can be assembled from teaching
assistantships, research funds, university graduate scholarships, external
scholarships, and bursaries.

Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) Invitation for Proposals:
Instructional Design Consultant, Gender and Health Resource

The Institute of Gender and Health (IGH) is currently producing a gender,
sex and health research casebook (What a Difference Sex and Gender Make),
slated for release in January 2012, as a tool to support the routine
integration of gender and sex considerations in health research. This
Invitation for Proposals is for an Instructional Design Consultant to
develop learning material accompaniments to the casebook.
The Consultant will develop two appropriately tailored products (or sets
of products, as relevant) to support the use of the casebook: 1) in
post-secondary classroom settings (by course instructors with students);
and 2) in a self-directed context (by trainees and researchers
independently reading the casebook outside of a structured learning
environment).

Please contact the IGH Knowledge Translation Manager Stephanie Coen via
email for more information.
The application is due September 30, 2011.

Announcement: Canada's Strategy for Patient Oriented Research (SPOR)

This document was developed under the leadership of the Canadian
Institutes of Health Research (CIHR), Canada's premier health research
agency. The focus on patient-oriented research is at the core of CIHR's
2009/10 Health Research Roadmap which outlines CIHR's strategic directions
over the next five years. It sets out a vision and strategy to improve
health outcomes and enhance patient care through the levers of research.
The underlying premise of the document is that greater uptake of
research-based evidence will improve the health of Canadians while
improving the cost-effectiveness of the health care system.

Un dilemme éthique précis soulevé dans la pratique;
populations;

devrait permettre d'accorder environ six subventions. Ce montant pourra
augmenter si d'autres partenaires
financiers décident d'y participer. Pour de plus amples renseignements,
consultez RechercheNet (
http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?prog=1331&&view=currentOpps&org=CIHR&type=AND&resultCount=25&sort=program&all=1&masterList=true
) .

permettre d'accorder quelque trois subventions.
http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?resultCount=25&sort=program&prog=1288&masterList=true&view=currentOpps&org=CIHR&type=AND&all=1&language=F

http://www.grandchallenges.ca/accueil/ ) .

d'accorder approximativement 16 bourses. Ce montant pourra augmenter si
d'autres partenaires financiers décident d'y participer.Pour de plus
amples renseignements, consultez RechercheNet (
http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?type=AND&sponsor=CIHR-14&view=search&org=CIHR&prog=1352&resultCount=25&language=F
) .

permettre d'accorder quelque six subventions. Ce montant pourra augmenter
si d'autres partenaires financiers décident d'y participer. Pour de plus
amples renseignements, consultez RechercheNet (
http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?resultCount=25&sort=program&prog=1305&masterList=true&view=currentOpps&org=CIHR&type=AND&all=1&language=F
) .
Subvention d'équipe: European Research Area in Ageing (ERA-AGE 2)

cet appel. Pour de plus amples renseignements, consultez RechercheNet (
http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?resultCount=25&sort=program&prog=1318&masterList=true&view=currentOpps&org=CIHR&type=AND&all=1&language=F
) ou le site Web ERA-AGE2 ( http://www.era-age.group.shef.ac.uk/ ) (en
anglais seulement).
devrait permettre d'accorder quelques quatre à huit subventions. Ce
participer. Pour de plus amples renseignements, consultez RechercheNet (
http://www.researchnet-recherchenet.ca/rnr16/vwOpprtntyDtls.do?resultCount=25&sort=program&prog=1303&masterList=true&view=currentOpps&org=CIHR&type=AND&all=1&language=F
) .

permettre d'accorder quelque six subventions. Ce montant pourra augmenter
si d'autres partenaires financiers décident de
participer. Pour de plus amples renseignements, consultez RechercheNet (

Diverse Spaces/Les lieux de la diversit=?iso-8859-1?Q?=E9:?= CFP

DEADLINE EXTENDED to September 30, 2011

Diverse Spaces:
Examining identity, community and citizenship within Canadian public
culture
April 20-21, 2012
Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and Indigenous Studies
TrentUniversity
Peterborough, Canada

Identity, belonging and citizenship within the nation state are
established, contested and legitimized within sites and institutions of
public culture, heritage and representation. In Canada, people from
diverse cultural backgrounds seek to engage with cultural, historical
and social knowledge in these spaces. While public museums have been
primary sites of engagement, some people have sought to create
alternative opportunities and institutional spaces to express and
represent the complexities of their histories, identities, communities
and places in both Canadian and global society. We are seeking papers
that explore the roles that all types of public spaces play in the
expression or contestation of different histories, different identities,
and different forms of community, national and transnational
citizenship.
The goal of this conference is to bring together a wide range of
academics, professionals, community leaders and students to examine,
analyze and theorize the dynamics of public cultural institutions in
relation to the putative multicultural nation of Canada. What
negotiations, relationships, compromises, conflicts, successes or
failures emerge as new spaces are established, and as old ones are
reconstituted or rethought? We welcome papers and panels from all
disciplines and interdisciplinary fields that touch on the spaces, the
structures, the goals, the practices, the people or the processes of
public cultural and heritage institutions on local, community, national
or international scales that comparatively or specifically offer comment
on the Canadian context. Possible topics might include, but are not
limited to:

· Conceptualizing
difference/diversity/multiculturalism/pluralism in public spaces
· Representing the multicultural ?we? in national spaces
· New social and cultural spaces of representation
· Collecting the transnational/multicultural ?citizen?
· Virtual/digital collections and the ?real? of the public
sphere
· Diaspora, migrations, uprooting and ?heritage?
· Spaces of memory and testimony
· Donors, diversity, and ?new? museum publics
· State museums/institutions and representations of citizenship
· Citizenship/community in public spaces from above, below and
afar
· Cross-cultural encounters in public spaces/institutions
· Museums and collaborative processes
· Virtual worlds, public culture and representation
· New media and transnational identities

Please submit either (a) 250 word abstracts for an individual papers,
or (b) proposals for panels including 3 papers to
diversespaces@gmail.com. Accepted papers and panels will be
announced by the end of January, 2012. Deadline for submission for
panels and papers extended to Sept. 30, 2011.

The conference is organized by Julia Harrison, Director, and Susan
Ashley, SSHRC Postdoctoral Fellow, Frost Centre for Canadian Studies and
Indigenous Studies, Trent University, Peterborough, Canada.

Canada.
