CASCA: Job postings/Offres d'emploi

***Although CASCA remains profoundly critical of the increasing trend
in the exploitation of part-time, sessional and contract faculty, the
list-serve includes advertisements for part-time teaching opportunities.

current research and issues, teaching strategies and epistemology in the
field of feminist social studies. Their research encompasses the fields of
gendered cultural practice, feminism, literature, film and visual culture,
cyber-feminism and Queer theory, First Nations, Inuit and Métis women,
women and space, and development and community engagement.

This presentation will discuss the work of the American feminist artist
Lynn Hershman Leeson, and will analyze the cyborg as a figure and notion in
her interdisciplinary work (photography, film, video). Professor Beaulieu's
research examines the relationship between cinema and literature, including
women's film (Hershman, Minh-ha, Cheang); digital literature and culture;
avant-gardes and experimental film (Deren, Brakhage); the New French
Extremity (Breillat, Bonello); new Queer cinema (Haynes) and Queer
theory (Butler, Bourcier); and feminist and cyber-feminist theory (Haraway,
Braidotti); as well as contemporary and 20th century women's literature
(Duras, Breillat).

cinéma expérimental (Deren, Brakhage); la New French Extremity (Breillat,

*Caroline Desbiens (U. Laval).*
Professor, Canada Research Chair in historical geography of the North,
Department of Geography

*Women's Leadership in Native Friendship Centres in Quebec. *

Professor Desbiens will discuss her research on the importance of
aboriginal women's involvement with native friendship centres in Quebec.
Many of these centres were founded by women and the majority of them are
still headed by women today. Women's involvement has been key in creating
and maintaining that network. Professor Desbiens' other research interests
include: feminist geography; cultural geography; aboriginal women;
planning, regional development and governance in the Innu territories of
Quebec; aboriginal worlds and the challenges of pluralism; aboriginal
people in urban milieus; the implications of the opening of the Northwest
Passage; and the activities of Chinese mining corporations in Quebec's
North.

Drawing on cultural and historical geography, Caroline Desbiens' research
focuses on indigenous heritage and territories, resource development and
intercultural relations in Northern Quebec, particularly in relation to
hydroelectric development. She also works on the dynamics of gender from a
geographical perspective. She has published many articles in French and
English, and her book *Power from the North: territory, identity and the
culture of hydroelectricity in Quebec* (UBC Press 2013) will be published
in French by Les Presses de l'Université Laval in 2015. Among her current
projects, Professor Desbiens conducts research in partnership with various
First Nations in Quebec, including the Pekuakamiulnuatsh (Montagnais du
Lac-Saint-Jean) on the Péribonka river hydroelectric development, and the
Aboriginal Friendship Centres of Quebec on the visibility of indigenous
peoples and indigenous women in urban areas. Professor Desbiens is a member
of the Board of Directors of Dialog, a research and knowledge network
focusing on indigenous peoples. She is also member of the Board of
Directors of the Fonds québéécois de recherche sur la société et la culture
and Commissaire to the Commission de toponymie of Quebec, where she works
to develop indigenous toponymy. She received the "Woman of Distinction"
Award in 2011 (Education category) from the Québec YWCA. You can read an
interview with Prof. Desbiens (in French) here:
http://tinyurl.com/njvoat6

: territory, identity and the culture of hydroelectricity in Quebec* (UBC

Le but

Wanted: CASCA Women's network communications officer/POSTE À COMBLER : RESPONSABLE DES COMMUNICATIONS POUR LE RÉSEAU DES FEMMES DE LA CASCA

[Version française en bas]

WANTED – CASCA WOMEN'S NETWORK COMMUNICATIONS OFFICER

After four years as CASCA Women's Network Communications Officer,
Martha Radice is leaving the role and we are looking for someone else
to take it on.

The Communications Officer's tasks and time commitments are:

- Running and maintaining the CASCA WN listserv (up to 1 hour a week)
– mainly moderating messages for relevance, occasionally adding or
deleting subscriptions;
- Keeping the CASCA WN webpages up to date (up to 5 hours a year,
working with CASCA webmaster);
- Preparing any documents for the CASCA WN business meeting at the
annual conference (up to 3 hours a year);
- Being a member of the CASCA WN coordinating committee, which means
keeping in touch with the WN coordinators and potentially contributing
to organization of the WN panel at the CASCA conference, adjudication
committees for prizes, etc. (time commitment varies; usually a little
flurry of activity around February-March if organizing the panel).

Skills/training required:
- Reasonable degree of computer literacy and 1-2 hours familiarization
training (with Martha) required to manage the listserv using Dalhousie
University's antiquated web-based interface;
- Good sense of organization (finding emails, keeping track of
documents, keeping track of due dates for things such as annual calls
for submission);
- Option to learn the web interface for editing CASCA web pages (with
the CASCA webmaster);
- Decent communication skills for liaising with WN coordinators, CASCA
conference organizers, etc.;
- Fluency in English and French preferred; if not, knowing a friendly
translator helps.

Handover date would be following the CASCA conference, in late
May/early June. Please contact Martha at martha.radice@dal.ca if you
are interested in taking up or finding out more about the role.

et, occasionnellement, à ajouter ou à supprimer des abonnements;
de la CASCA);
(maximum de trois heures par année);

de l'Université Dalhousie;
l'appel de communications pour le colloque annuel);

*ANTHROPOLOGY PUBLIC ALUMNI LECTURE*
*/Presented by the Anthropology Colloquium Series, University of Toronto/
*

*The Shape of Human Origins*

*Carol V. Ward*
Professor and Director of Anatomical Sciences
University of Missouri

*Thursday, April 16, 2015*
7:00-9:00pm, ES 1050
33 Willcocks Street, University of Toronto
Earth Sciences Centre, Reichman Family Lecture Hall
/Followed by Reception/

The transition to habitually terrestrial bipedal locomotion (i.e.,
walking upright) is a hallmark of early hominin evolution, and
continues to be a topic that captivates the scientific community and
public alike. To have an accurate understanding of how this transition
occurred, we need to understand the nature of the ancestral condition
from which hominins evolved. Although often ignored in favor of upper
and lower limb fossils, the torso has been a locus of morphological
change that reflects key adaptations to posture and locomotion, the
biology of early hominins, and the patterns of selection that shaped
them. New fossil evidence of the torso of Miocene apes and early
hominins challenges assumptions about the evolution of locomotor
adaptations in hominoids and the biology of early hominins. Combining
the implications of these new fossils with novel analyses of
previously known material provides new perspectives on the question of
hominin origins and early evolution.

Carol is a paleoanthropologist interested in the evolution of apes and
hominins. She is best known for description of new fossils of
Australopithecus anamensis, A. afarensis, and Proconsul nyanzae and
for research on postcranial morphology and locomotor adaptation in
Miocene and Plio-Pleistocene hominoids. She is co-director of the West
Turkana Paleo Project through the National Museums of Kenya, currently
working at the A. anamensis site of Kanapoi and other sites throughout
West Turkana. She is a Fellow of the American Association for the
Advancement of Science, and has won several teaching awards. Carol
Ward earned her BS in Anthropology and Zoology from the University of
Michigan in 1986 and her PhD in Functional Anatomy and Evolution from
the Department of Cell Biology and Anatomy at the Johns Hopkins School
of Medicine in 1991. She joined the faculty at University of Missouri
in 1991 in a joint appointment in the Departments of Anthropology and
Anatomy. In 2006 she moved full time to the Department of Pathology
and Anatomical Sciences to found that department's Integrative Anatomy
group where she is Professor and Director of Anatomical Sciences.

Talk: Headscarves and Hymens, Ottawa Writer's Festival

Ottawa Writer's Festival presents Headscarves and Hymens
with Mona Eltahawy

Hosted by CBC's Lucy van Oldenbarneveld

Saturday April 25

2:00pm @ Christ Church Cathedral • 414 Sparks Street

Mona Eltahawy, an award-winning Egyptian-American feminist writer and
commentator, wrote an article for Foreign Policy entitled "Why Do They
Hate Us?"; "they" being Muslim men, "us" being women. The piece
sparked controversy, of course.

In Headscarves and Hymens , she takes her argument further. Drawing on
her years as a campaigner and a commentator on women's issues in the
Middle East, she explains that since the Arab Spring began, women in
the Arab world have had two revolutions to undertake: one fought with
men against oppressive regimes; and another fought against an entire
political and economic system that treats women in countries from
Yemen and Saudi Arabia to Egypt, Tunisia and Libya as second-class
citizens.

Join us for an inside look at the "toxic mix of culture and religion
that few seem willing or able to disentangle lest they blaspheme or
offend." A manifesto motivated by hope and fury in equal measure, this
session with Mona Eltahawy promises to be as illuminating as it is
incendiary.
