CFP AAAs: "Towards An Anthropology of Divorce" Abstracts due 2/21

CFP AAAs: "Towards An Anthropology of Divorce" Abstracts due 2/21

Session Title: Towards AnAnthropology of "Divorce"

Organizer: Melanie Angel Medeiros, University of Arizona
Discussant: Linda-Anne Rebhun, University of California - Merced

Please submit abstracts to Melanie at melanie2@email.arizona.edu by Feb 21st.

Anthropologistsare witnesses to the global transformation of marriage,
thealliance-forming institution our predecessors argued is at
thefoundation of all
societies. The study ofmarriage is central to anthropological studies of
kinship and
gender, and more recently studies of globalization, modernization
andromantic love.
However, divorce, a topic commonly studied byscholars in the fields of
sociology,
psychology, family studies andwomen and gender studies, has been relatively
neglected by the fieldof anthropology. As global legal divorce rates
continue to
rise andanthropologists observe increases in marital dissatisfaction due
tomodernization, globalization and the rise of romantic love andcompanionate
marriage, anthropological studies that analyze thefactors leading to and the
perceptions and experiences of the failureof marital relationships make an
important
contribution toanthropological theories of sociocultural and economic change,
love, intimacy, marriage, and kinship. Anthropologists have demonstrated
how across
cultures "marriage"as a category encompasses diverse relationships. Thus,
to
understandthe experiences and perceptions of marital failure across
culturesthe
anthropological study of "divorce" must also include thefailure or end of
marital
unions (including legal marriage, unions made through ritual or
ceremony,hetero-normative, homosexual and transgender domestic
partnerships,non-cohabitating conjugal couples, etc.). It should also include
adiscussion as to what constitutes marital failure, whether it belegal
divorce,
separation, individuals cohabitating but living separate lives, etc.
This session will highlight the anthropological contribution toscholarship on
"divorce," demonstrating the value of theoreticaland ethnographic
perspectives on
marriage and marital failure. Thissession will challenge reductionist
definitions of
"marriage" and"divorce," to include studies of diverse types of
maritalrelationships
and their failure. Paper topics may include, but arenot limited to:

The impact of sociocultural and socioeconomic change on notions of
romantic love and
companionate marriage, and how these changes relate to marital
failure.
Gender roles, marriage and marital failure
An analysis of the failure of conjugal relationships within the
context of parenting
and kinship relationships; both how children and kin impact marital
relations and
the effect of the failure of a marital relationship on parent-child
and kin
relations.
The relationship between marital failure and health and well-being,
including but
not limited to the perceived and/or actual impact of marital failure on
sexual and
reproductive decision-making and health, individual health and well-being, or
household health.

Preference will be given to papers that engage ethnographic data to
illuminate the
anthropological contribution tothe study of "divorce."

Recommendations Work on Gender and the Undocumented

Colleagues,

If you have encountered any very *interesting/innovative approaches to
gender issues involving undocumented migrants*, *would you please send them
to me at mahlers@fiu.edu*? I am preparing an overview book chapter for a
new set of volumes on undocumented migrants to the U.S. Any international
pieces would also be welcome as would movies, multimedia projects,
literature, etc. I want to include references to any materials that best
communicate the gendered experiences of undocumented migrants.

Particularly important are any that address spousal relations and also
masculinities.

Thank you!

Announcement: Fellowship in Ethnographic Writing Fall 2013

Fellowship in Ethnographic Writing, Fall 2013

The Centre for Ethnography (CE) at the University of Toronto at
Scarborough (UTSC) is accepting applications for their annual Fellowship
in Ethnographic Writing. Writing is a key component of the work of an
anthropologist, but it takes time and benefits from some distance from the
fieldwork itself, and from other obligations. In recognition of this fact
the CE introduced a Fellowship in Ethnographic Writing in 2010. We are now
seeking applications for the Fall Term of 2013, to be held at UTSC.

The recipient of this award is expected to devote their time fully to
writing and may not teach or hold any other form of employment during the
tenure of the award. They are expected to attend all talks and colloquia
at the CE, to work several days a week on campus at UTSC, and to
contribute a presentation of their work in progress to the colloquia. In
addition, the Fellow will be available to coach students completing an
undergraduate writing assignment, in tandem with a professor teaching a
core introductory course. This work will be limited to 5 hours in total.

Applicants should supply a statement of no more than 5 double-spaced pages
describing their writing project, indicating the stage that it is at, and
precisely what they wish to accomplish during the duration of the
Fellowship. Explicit attention to questions of genre, narrative, and
audience are welcome but not essential. Successful applicants will either
be at the post-doctoral stage (engaged in transforming a thesis into a
book or articles) or in the final stages of completing the doctoral
thesis. All applicants must have completed their doctoral fieldwork and
have already submitted significant portions of their dissertation to their
committee. The current stipend is set at $10,000 for a period of ten
weeks.

The closing date for this competition is March 1, 2013. Please send all
applications, as well as the names of two referees, electronically to the
Centre for Ethnography <centreforethnography@utsc.utoronto.ca>.

Upcoming Talk - Anna Tsing - University of Ottawa - January 31, 2013

Anna Tsing - Critical Thinkers in Religion, Law and Social Theory

University of Ottawa
Thu, January 31, 2013

University of Ottawa,
Simard Building, Rm. 125
4:00pm - 6:30pm
Thursday, Jan. 31, 2013

Title: Critical Description after Progress: Recognizing Diversity in
Damaged Times

Abstract: As we lose expectations of progress, how shall we know the
world? This talk introduces "critical description," a genre for
reinvigorating curiosity about heterogeneity, after progress. The talk
draws from Anna Tsing's book in progress: Living in ruins. Capitalism,
blasted landscapes, and the possibilities of life on earth: a mushroom
story. Based on research tracking the global search for high-value gourmet
wild mushrooms called matsutake, the talk explores emerging lines of
cosmopolitan difference and the challenges of making lives together across
what one might call "contaminated diversity" -- that is, kinds shaped by
histories of damage and dislocation.

Bio: Anna Tsing teaches anthropology at the University of California,
Santa Cruz. She is also Niels Bohr Professor at Aarhus University,
Denmark, where she will lead a transdisciplinary research group on the
problems of living in the Anthropocene. She is the author of Friction: an
ethnography of global connection and In the realm of the diamond queen:
marginality in an out-of-the-way place, both from Princeton University
Press. She has co-edited numerous volumes, most recently, with Carol
Gluck, Words in motion: toward a global lexicon (Duke University Press).
Her current research follows the humble trail of mushrooms into the great
economic, cultural, and ecological dilemmas of our times.

GENDER AND EMERGENCY HEALTH

Wednesday, Jan. 16, 2013, at 1 pm EST

Gender-Aware Disaster Care: Simple Interventions That Can Reduce Impact,
Suffering and Post-Disaster Emergency Healthcare Costs. Speaker: Roxane
Richter, U. Witwatersrand; President of World Missions Possible

This presentation will include women's heightened risks and differing
clinical manifestations of post-traumatic stress disorder and pain
presentation; “pregnancy status” triage screening; as well as
gender-sensitive supplies and services (such as private breastfeeding and
OB/GYN exam areas, birth control, and prenatal nutrition advocacy). Roxane
will explore how female pre-event (chronic) health issues are exacerbated
in post-disaster settings and highlight effective intervention and
prevention strategies.

Hygiene Issues in Disaster Events. Speaker: Angela Devlen, President &
Managing Partner Wakefield Brunswick; Director of Mahila Partnership

Drawing from case examples and field experiences following disasters, this
presentation introduces the issue of gendered sanitation, hygiene and
menstruation management. While there has been a more recent emphasis with
respect to gender mainstreaming, water and sanitation, little information
exists regarding specific strategies for addressing needs regarding
menstruation and implementing solutions that provide for long-term
sustainability of meeting these needs in a post-disaster and rebuilding
context. Angela will discuss how to prepare for and respond to the needs
of women's hygiene issues in disaster events including post-disaster
hygiene kit distribution and local cottage industry sanitary pad
production.

Now forming: AAA Interest Group on the Anthropology of Tourism

Dear colleagues:

We are writing to invite you to participate in a new American
Anthropological Association (AAA) Interest Group on the Anthropology
of Tourism.

Nearly 50 AAA members from around the world met in San Francisco last
November to form the scholarly network that will serve as the basis
for the new Interest Group. The Interest Group’s goals are to develop
collaborations within and outside of the AAA, promote our scholarly
efforts, create AAA panels and events, and exchange ideas and research
related to the anthropology of tourism. We have created a website to
share information about the group, its goals, and its members, as
well as syllabi and news on developments within this growing
subdiscipline: http://www.anthropolgyoftourism.net.

As part of the process of gaining formal recognition by the American
Anthropological Association as an official Interest Group, we ask all
interested AAA members to visit the web link below and provide your
name and contact information. This will constitute signing the
petition to create the Interest Group, as well as becoming a member.
Interest group membership is free; there are no dues and you can be a
member of multiple interest groups. However, you must be a member of
the AAA.
http://www.anthropologyoftourism.net/become-a-member.html

If you are not a member of the AAA, but would still like to be
involved, we encourage you join the Interest Group’s page on Facebook.
Go to: https://www.facebook.com/groups/anthropologyoftourism/?fref=ts

We look forward to celebrating the formation of this group at a

Tri-Agency Framework: Responsible Conduct of Research

Canada's research granting agencies—Canadian Institutes of Health Research
(CIHR), Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada
(NSERC), and Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada
(SSHRC)—are committed to fostering and maintaining an environment that
supports and promotes the responsible conduct of research. On December 5,
2011, the Agencies officially launched the new Tri-Agency Framework:
Responsible Conduct of Research (
http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7H0-kUMFF1 ) . This new Framework
sets out the responsibilities and corresponding policies for researchers,
institutions, and the Agencies that together help support and promote a
positive research environment.

Implementing a Schedule for the Retention of Information on ResearchNet

Please be advised that a schedule for the retention of ResearchNet data
will be implemented as follows, effective December 10th, 2011:

All submitted application activities and documents will be retained for
one year after the application decision has been released.

All withdrawn applications will be retained for one year after decisions
for the competition have been posted.

All incomplete and non-submitted applications will be retained for three
months after the competition deadline date.

All review activities and documents will be retained for eighteen months
after the decisions for the application have been posted.

All decision and post-decisions activities and documents will be retained
for eighteen months after the related application decisions.

Information on the Retention Schedule will be permanently available on the
ResearchNet homepage ( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7H1-kUMFF2 )
. Should users of ResearchNet wish to keep any documents for future
reference, we suggest that they download the PDF (Portable Document
Format) of the documents to another storage area (e.g., the hard drive of
a personal computer).

ICES Applied Health Research Questions

The Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) is inviting all
Ontario organizations that are users of research evidence (Knowledge
Users) to submit Applied Health Research Questions (AHRQs). An AHRQ is a
question posed by a health system Knowledge User in order to request
research evidence that can be applied to, improve or benefit the Ontario
health system. Institutes, centres and projects funded by the Planning,
Research and Analysis Branch of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care
(MOHLTC) provide responses to AHRQs to inform planning, policy and program
development, which in turn helps strengthen the Ontario health system.

Three types of AHRQs may be requested:
1. Rapid response – Preliminary information will be delivered in one week
or less providing a "first blush" response.
2. Research report or technical brief – Approximately 4-8 weeks of work
will be required to synthesize the existing research evidence on a given
topic.
3. Research project – Where it has been confirmed that new knowledge must
be generated, i.e., existing knowledge is not sufficient for planning or
policy development requirements; a new research project will be initiated.
The duration may be months, or years, depending on the project.
Please submit any comments, inquiries and your completed Knowledge User
AHRQ Request Form to: Dorina Simeonov

ICES will be accepting Knowledge User AHRQ Request Forms (pp. 2-3 in
MOHLTC AHRQ Templates attached) for Research Reports, Technical Briefs and
Research Projects semi-annually, with the first deadline extension coming
up on January 13, 2012. Rapid response requests can be submitted at any
time and another call for research projects will be sent out in April,
2012, with a deadline of April 13, 2012.

Reporting Guidelines for Equity-relevant Systematic Reviews - Complete Our
Survey

The Campbell and Cochrane Equity Methods Group invites you to complete a
survey ( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7H2-kUMFF3 ) on the need
for reporting guidelines for equity-relevant systematic reviews. We have
identified a significant gap in reporting effectiveness of interventions
for poor and vulnerable populations in systematic reviews. One way to
improve reporting of facets of specific importance to systematic reviews
reporting on inequities is to develop specific reporting guidelines, for
example, by extending or amplifying the PRISMA statement (Preferred
Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses). Currently
PRISMA has no guidance specific to health equity and we are now in the
process of developing an equity extension to PRISMA. We invite you to
complete our survey ( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7H3-kUMFF4 )
on this extension – open for
responses until January 5th, 2012. For more information visit our website
( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7H4-kUMFF5 ) or blogs: Speaking
of Medicine ( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7H5-kUMFF6 )

RechercheNet ( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7Hm-kUMFF2 ) .

Prisma. Nous vous invitons à remplir notre sondage (
http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?QFVS-Q7Ho-kUMFF4 ) sur cette extension -

RAI call for fieldwork photographs: Deadline 4th February 2013

CALL FOR FIELDWORK PHOTOGRAPHS AND SHORT DESCRIPTION: DEADLINE Monday
4th February 2013

The Royal Anthropological Institute's Education Department is putting
together a printed publication that will go out to schools and colleges
teaching anthropology and for future outreach events. We are interested
in publicising the fantastic and important work that anthropologists are
doing around the world and are looking for some interesting photographs
that we can use for the publication along with a short description.

Submission guidelines- what we are looking for:

- A high resolution image or images (maximum of 5 entries) of
fieldwork conducted in the past 5-10 years (the best images would be
ones that could tell the story visually and get readers interested in
learning more about the research)

- Title of each photograph, date and location

- A short description of 50-100 words (this may have to be
edited) describing the fieldwork, the aim and purpose of the research,
and your role as an anthropologist conducting the fieldwork. The
description will be read by non-anthropologists so we want to make sure
the research is comprehensible. Please try and keep it jargon free and
journalistic in style.

The photographs submitted will remain the copyright of the person who
took the photograph and will be credited as such in the brochure. A
selection of photographs and descriptions will be published in the
printed publication. We apologise in advance if your submission is not
selected for the publication. We are happy to send copies of the
brochure to the anthropologists whose work is published as a thank you
for their contribution.

We would also like to create a Flickr album of all the entries we
receive so that teachers and students have an online resource as well.
The photographs would be published on our Flickr website:
www.flickr.com/photos/raieducation The anthropologists/photographers
would retain the copyright of their images and the photographs will be
locked so that they will not be able downloaded.

Please submit your photograph and description to Nafisa Fera at
education@therai.org.uk . If you have any further questions please
don't hesitate to get in touch.

The deadline for submissions is Monday 4th February 2013.

We look forward to receiving your submissions,

Best,

Nafisa

EASA midterm conference CFP -- deadline extended

Dear all,

conference has been extended to this Friday, 25 January. Those interested

CFP ?The Nomadism of Social Anthropologists?

Midterm Conference of the Europeanist Network of the European Association
of Social Anthropologists (EASA) ? jointly held with the Border Crossings
Network

26-27th April 2013, Bucharest, Romania

While anthropologists of the past decades have devoted increasing
attention
both to questions of reflexivity and to people ?on the move? such as
migrants, relatively little attention has focused on the geographical and
cultural movement of social anthropologists themselves, especially since
the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. Even if there is growing interest in
non-hegemonic anthropologies by scholars who have often lived in several
countries (esp. Daveluy and Dorias 2010; Ribeiro and Escobar 2006) and
recent work on ?the ethnographic self as resource? (Collins and Gallinat
2010) argues that anthropologists? personal experiences provide
potentially
insightful ethnographic data that can enrich their scientific analysis, the
consequences of past and present anthropologists? nomadism on their own
research ? including their training, career and grant opportunities ? have
not been thoroughly analysed. It is common knowledge that today, in Europe
and beyond, being ?on the move? has increasingly become a part of many
anthropologists? lives. Possibilities for academic nomadism exist in the
student years through the EU Erasmus programme and joint PhDs
(?cotutelles?), and continue into professional academic life due to the
scarcity of academic positions, hyper-specialisation, the exigencies of
funding and the constraints of funding criteria (see for example the EU?s
Marie Curie programs) or to simple anthropological curiosity. While not
being restricted to anthropologists, this mobile mode of life has
particular consequences for the scientific work of anthropologists, from
how they perceive relationships in the field to the ways in which they
envisage their writing, from the need to develop coping strategies faced
to
continually changing research groups to the difficult adaptation to a new
foreign audience. Questions of fundamental and applied research as well as
of neutrality, engagement and militantism are but some issues on which
anthropologists? personal trajectories weigh heavily.

This conference seeks original theoretical and personal reflections about
how academic nomadism through different countries, cultures and continents
affects the practices, day-to-day experiences and theoretical approaches
of
social anthropologists (that include but are not limited to the domain of
their training, teaching and research). We invite contributors to consider
some of the questions below:

? What motivates future anthropologists to seek training in one country
instead of another?

? How does exposure to anthropology as practiced in several countries
influence their research: the topics that anthropologists study, the
theoretical approaches they privilege and the language(s) and audience(s)
they publish in and for?

? How do larger historical and political issues (e.g. post-socialism,
former British and French colonial presence, American empire, regional
traditions such as in Latin America) play into the larger world in which
anthropologists live and research, and influence their theoretical
approaches?

? What kinds of moral and ethical issues are involved when the
researcher is based in several countries, or has to negotiate different
ethical standards between the country of one?s host institution and that
of
one?s fieldwork, while having been socialised in yet another ethical mode?

? How does the researcher negotiate his or her figure of rootlessness in
?stable? field environments?

As the professional anthropologist as an academic and intellectual migrant
is not a completely new character, analyses of historical material on 20th
century
anthropologists is welcome.
