The Population Health Intervention Research Initiative for Canada
(PHIRIC) aims to increase the quantity, quality and use of population
health intervention research in Canada through a strategic and
deliberate alignment of initiatives by key organizations responsible
for public health research, policy and practice.

As our work has been unfolding, it's been clear that different
definitions of population health intervention research (PHIR) that is,
different takes on what it is or could be, are getting in people's way.

Many thanks to colleagues who commented on Draft 1. We hope you see
improvement!

We now invite your feedback on Draft 2 of the Frequently Asked
Questions (FAQs) about PHIR that were developed through an online
consultation process.

Is Dr. Google always the best source for health information? While
there are several reputable online sources, many other websites can
make misleading, incomplete, and even contradictory health claims.
Distinguishing between them can be difficult given that nearly half of
adult Canadians have low health literacy skills.

Some researchers and local organizations wish to help people obtain
accurate health information. Will our increasing dependence on
information technology create a digital divide with those lacking
health literacy skills finding it increasingly difficult to get access
to accurate and vital health information and possibly experiencing
lower health outcomes? What community services are needed?

The Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA) is pleased to announce
the Call for Abstracts, Workshops, Pre-conference and Breakfast
Sessions for the CPHA 2011 Annual Conference. Public health
professionals, researchers, policy-makers, academics and students from
across the country and around the world will meet in Montreal, Quebec
as CPHA enters its second century of service to Canadians. The

Contribute to the 2011 International Review of CIHR
As part of its commitment to accountability and transparency toward
Canadians, CIHR's Governing Council is commissioning an International
Review of CIHR. This comprehensive review process will commence in
February 2011 with reviews of CIHR's Institutes and will conclude in
March 2011 with a review of CIHR as a whole. The purpose of the review
will be to obtain rigorous, authoritative and objective advice on how
effectively CIHR is fulfilling its mandate.

The review will be conducted by a prestigious panel of international
experts, chaired by Dr. Elias Zerhouni, former Director of the US
National Institutes of Health. Various sources of evidence will inform
the International Review Panel deliberations, including internal
assessments, interviews with key stakeholders, and open and targeted
surveys.

AusAID-DfID-3ie Systematic Review Call for Proposals

Call for proposals

The Australian Agency for International Development
(AusAID)<http://www.ausaid.gov.au/>, the UK's Department for
International Development (DFID)<http://www.dfid.gov.uk/> and the
International Initiative for Impact Evaluation
(3ie)<http://www.3ieimpact.org/> are announcing a joint call for
proposals for systematic reviews to strengthen the international
community's capacity for evidence-based policy making. AusAID, DFID
and 3ie have developed a range of priority systematic review
questions<http://www.3ieimpact.org/userfiles/file/AUSAID-DFID_3ie%20questions_compiled.pdf>
and will commission 59 studies in February
2011.

Systematic reviews examine the existing evidence on a particular
intervention or program in low and middle income countries, drawing
also on evidence from developed countries when pertinent. The studies
should be carried out according to recognized international standards
and guidelines. All studies will be subject to an external review
process and for this purpose teams will be encouraged to register for
peer review with a relevant systematic review coordinating body.

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
"FROM POLICY TO RESEARCH AND BACK AGAIN" - THE 1ST ANNUAL RURAL
RESEARCH WORKSHOP
May 5, 2011 (Workshop participants are invited to afternoon
discussions on rural research and policy needs as part of the federal
Rural Development Network's AGM on May 4, 2011). Ottawa.

To foster networking among rural researchers and to provide a forum
for rural research and policy discourse, we invite researchers (e.g.,
academic institutions, government agencies and non-governmental
organizations) who are interested in rural issues to submit a proposal
for a paper presentation or poster. The plenary sessions will focus on
"From Policy to Research and Back Again" but contributed papers and
posters on any topic related to rural Canada are solicited.

Paper Presentation - Presentations must include a clear research
purpose and objectives, methodology or approach (if applicable), a
clear summary of the research results and suggested policy
contributions. Up to 24 presentations can be accommodated. Proposals
and presentations may be in English or French. A group of three paper
proposals may be submitted for consideration as an organized session.
Each presentation will be restricted to 20 minutes.

Poster - Poster proposals must include a clear research purpose and
objectives, methodology or approach (if applicable), a clear summary
of the research results and suggested policy contributions. Up to 13
posters can be accommodated and proposals and posters may be in
English or French. Posters are restricted to a width of 3 feet and a
height of 4 feet.

Proposals should clearly indicate the name of each author, the email
and telephone number of the contact author, the language of the
presentation or poster (English or French), paper title and an
abstract no more than 200 words. As a workshop outcome, authors may be
invited to submit full papers to be considered for inclusion in a
journal special edition.

A Call for Nominations for the CIHR Synapse Awards 2011

Each year, the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Synapse
Awards are given out to emphasize the importance of mentors in
developing Canada's next generation of health researchers. The CIHR
Synapse Awards honour persons who have made exceptional contributions
to the promotion of health research among Canadian secondary school
students.

One of the three awards, valued at $10,000, is given to a health
research group that has been active in youth outreach activities and
is intended to support the group's future mentorship activities. The
other two awards, worth $5,000 each, are provided to an individual
health researcher involved in youth outreach efforts and an individual
master's student, doctoral student or postdoctoral fellow who is
likewise engaged in mentorship activities.

All nominations must be received by CIHR on or before Friday, January
28, 2011.

Call for membership applications: Ministerial Advisory Council on the
Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in Canada

The Ministerial Advisory Council on the Federal Initiative to Address
HIV/AIDS in Canada is a group with broad individual and collective
expertise in HIV/AIDS appointed by the Federal Minister of Health.
Ministerial Advisory Council's mandate is to provide evidence-based
strategic policy advice to the Minister of Health on pan-Canadian
aspects of HIV/AIDS consistent with the Council's Terms of Reference.

The Public Health Agency of Canada, on behalf of the Minister of
Health, is seeking applications to renew the membership of the
Ministerial Advisory Council on the Federal Initiative to Address
HIV/AIDS in Canada (Council).

The goal of this selection process is to ensure that Council's
membership reflects a range of expertise capable of addressing the
essential aspects of HIV/AIDS in Canada.

If you have applied previously and wish to be considered again, you
must re-apply in order to be considered. All decisions on appointments
to the Ministerial Advisory Council on the Federal Initiative to
Address HIV/AIDS in Canada are made by the Minister of Health.

Applicants will be considered based on their experience, knowledge and
expertise in any of the following areas relative to HIV/AIDS:

Aboriginal issues; Medical and psycho-social fields; Bio-medical
research; National response to HIV/AIDS; Clinical HIV trials; Persons
living with HIV/AIDS; Frontline response; Population Health;

In assessing applicants for appointment, a minimum of five seats will
be assigned to self-declared persons living with HIV/AIDS. In
addition, consideration will be given to ethno-cultural diversity,
gender and regional balance.

Council members will be expected to:

* Provide evidence-based strategic policy advice to the Minister
of Health on pan-Canadian aspects of HIV/AIDS;
* Attend and participate fully in Ministerial Advisory Council
face-to-face meetings (three per year);
* Attend and participate fully in Ministerial Advisory Council
teleconferences;
* Participate on at least one of Ministerial Advisory Council's
sub-committees;
* Engage strategic policy thinking regarding the HIV/AIDS
epidemic in Canada;
* Rise above the corporate interest of any organization with
which the member may be affiliated and contribute to a pan-Canadian
vision and approach to the Federal Initiative to Address HIV/AIDS in
Canada;
* Be willing and able to communicate ideas and issues in a group
setting.

All costs associated with travel, meals, hospitality and
teleconferences will be covered by the Public Health Agency of Canada
in accordance with the Treasury Board of Canada Guidelines.

Call for Papers on Health and the Environment
Papers due: Wednesday, December 15, 2010
Health Affairs will publish a theme issue on Health and the
Environment in May 2011.

We invite submissions of papers that inform policymakers about
environmental dimensions of health and their impact on individual and
population health, health disparities, and health care costs.

We particularly seek submissions that illuminate problems AND
recommend thoughtful and effective policy responses for federal, state
and local policymakers.
Papers should be submitted to Health Affairs by December 15, 2010 at

Papers will be considered for inclusion in the theme issue as well as
in subsequent issues of the journal.

Timetable
The journal welcomes original papers, analyses, and commentaries for
the thematic issue by December 15, 2010.
Health Affairs editors and the theme issue advisors (Drs. J. Pete
Myers, Kenneth Olden, and Tracey Woodruff) will evaluate submissions
and make initial selection of those which warrant further
consideration. Health Affairs will publish additional papers on
environmental health through 2011.

Papers submitted after December 15, 2010 will be considered for
publication in future issues of the journal.

Considering the short timeline, we do not expect all authors to
initiate new research, but encourage synthesizing existing work to
frame the issues and inform policy discussions and deliberations for
an audience that heretofore may not have devoted much thought to
environmental health.

Selected papers will be subjected to peer-review by external reviewers
in a double blind process which masks the identity of both authors and
reviewers. Authors of papers that are determined to be appropriate
will be asked to revise their papers in January and February.

Copyediting and production for the issue will take place following
that, with publication scheduled for early May 2011.

Submissions should not exceed about 3500 words, plus a 100-word
abstract, and may include up to 3 exhibits.

Ontario Agency for Health Protection and Promotion - Health Promotion,
Chronic Disease & Injury Prevention Scientist
Job Overview:
Reporting to the Director of Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and
Injury Prevention (HPCDIP), the position is responsible for:
collaborating on the design, implementation and evaluation of studies
that support OAHPP's Health Promotion, Chronic Disease and Injury
Prevention research portfolio. Desired areas of focus include
population health assessment, intervention research, the assessment of
natural policy experiments and research on the process of building
capacity for health promotion/chronic disease prevention practice; the
provision of scientific and technical advice to contribute to
evidence-informed public health practice and the generation of
knowledge from practice.

Responsibilities:
Provide scientific guidance, expert advice to the Director of HPCDIP
and Senior Scientist in order to ensure intellectual rigour and
scientific relevance in all research activities related to the
portfolio, including:
· Collaborating on the development of the mission-related
research agenda for the HPCDIP portfolio, consistent with the OAHPP's
overall strategic research priorities;
· Serving as Investigator or Co-Investigator in HPCDIP led and
collaborative research projects (including data collection, analysis
and report writing);
· Developing research grant applications;
· Providing expert advice and technical support for applied,
'practice-based' research focusing on the planning and assessment of
HPCDIP-led and supported training and knowledge exchange initiatives;
· Working with the OAHPP laboratory scientist to support the
design and implementation of the Ontario Health Study
· Supporting a program for post-doctoral and graduate students
in collaboration with public health schools and relevant degree
programs;
· Providing scientific liaison functions related to relevant
external committees;
· Providing guidance and support to research coordinators and
analysts responsible for data collection, data analysis and report
writing;
· Participating in the HPCDPIP strategic and operational
planning cycle, including supporting the identification of emerging
HPCDIP research priorities and opportunities;
· Mentoring graduate students and post-Doctoral placements;
· Supporting data collection strategies relevant for health
promotion, chronic disease and injury prevention; o Provide scientific
and technical advice on the creation of reports.

Other duties as assigned which may include:
· Support policy research initiatives;
· Manage research contracts and collaborative relationships
with research organizations the MHP and other government ministries;
· Liaison with surveillance and epidemiology as needed.

Requirements:
A completed doctoral degree in a relevant public health discipline,
including health promotion, sociology, psychology, health
communication and/or epidemiology. Preference will be given to
candidates who demonstrate cross-disciplinary experience as well as
the application of quantitative methods to assess changes in health
status at the individual, community, system, and population levels.

Minimum 2-3 years academic experience demonstrating leadership in
intervention research and evaluation pertaining to health promotion,
chronic disease and injury prevention

Eligible for (or currently holding) an academic appointment (i.e.,
assistant professor status) at an Ontario University within a relevant
academic public health discipline

Le Dr Google est-il toujours la meilleure source pour l'information
sur la santé ? Bien qu'il existe plusieurs sources fiables, de
nombreux sites affichent des déclarations sur la santé trompeuses,
incomplètes, voire contradictoires. Distinguer ces sites entre eux
peut être difficile puisque près de la moitié des adultes canadiens
ont de faibles compétences en littératie de la santé.

Certains chercheurs et des organisations locales veulent aider les
gens à trouver des informations exactes sur la santé. Notre dépendance
croissante envers les technologies de l'information va-t-elle créer un
fossé numérique où ceux et celles qui ont des compétences limitées en
littératie de la santé éprouvent des difficultés croissantes à accéder
à des informations exactes et vitales sur la santé ? Quels sont les
services dont nous avons besoin dans notre communauté ?

Participez à l'examen international 2011 des IRSC

Déterminé à agir en toute transparence et à rendre des comptes aux
Canadiens, le conseil d'administration des IRSC a commandé un examen
international des IRSC. Cet examen détaillé débutera en février 2011
par une évaluation des instituts des IRSC et se terminera en mars 2011
par l'évaluation de l'organisation dans son ensemble. L'examen a pour
but d'obtenir une évaluation objective et rigoureuse de l'efficacité
avec laquelle les IRSC remplissent leur mandat.

L'examen sera dirigé par un prestigieux comité formé d'experts
internationaux et présidé par le Dr Elias Zerhouni, ancien directeur
des National Institutes of Health (NIH) des États-Unis. Diverses
sources de données probantes éclaireront le comité d'experts
internationaux dans ses discussions, notamment des rapports
d'évaluation interne, des entrevues réalisées auprès d'intervenants
clés, et des sondages ouverts et ciblés.

Neuvième édition des Prix canadiens de recherche en santé des IRSC

APPEL DE COMMUNICATIONS
« DES POLITIQUES À LA RECHERCHE, ALLER ET RETOUR » 1er ATELIER ANNUEL
DE RECHERCHE RURALE

Le 5 mai 2011 (Le 4 mai 2011 après-midi, les participants sont invités
à des discussions sur la recherche rurale et les besoins en matière de
politiques dans le cadre de l'AGA du Réseau (fédéral) pour le
développement rural). Ottawa.

Afin de promouvoir le réseautage entre les chercheurs ruraux et de
fournir un forum pour la recherche rurale et l'élaboration de
politiques, nous invitons les chercheurs (p. ex. les institutions
académiques, les organismes gouvernementaux et les organisations non
gouvernementales) qui s'intéressent aux enjeux ruraux à soumettre une
proposition d'article ou d'affiche. Les séances plénières se
concentreront sur le thème « Des politiques à la recherche, aller et
retour », mais les communications offertes, articles ou affiches, sur
tout sujet lié au Canada rural sont également demandées.

Soumission d'articles de recherche – Les articles soumis doivent avoir
un but de recherche et des objectifs clairs, une méthodologie ou une
approche (lorsqu'elle est pertinente), et comprendre un résumé clair
des résultats de la recherche et des suggestions de politiques. Un
maximum de 24 articles peuvent être reçus. Les propositions et
présentations d'articles peuvent être rédigées en français ou en
anglais. Les propositions d'articles peuvent être soumises par groupe
de trois afin de faire l'objet d'une séance spéciale. Chaque
présentation sera limitée à 20 minutes.

Soumission d'affiches – Les propositions d'affiche doivent avoir un
but de recherche et des objectifs clairs, une méthodologie ou une
approche (lorsqu'elle est pertinente), et inclure un résumé clair des
résultats de la recherche et des suggestions de politiques. Un maximum
de 13 affiches peuvent être reçues, et les propositions et affiches
peuvent être rédigées en anglais ou en français. Les affiches ne
peuvent dépasser trois pieds (90 cm) en largeur et quatre pieds (120
cm) en hauteur.

Les propositions doivent mentionner clairement le nom de chaque
auteur, l'adresse courriel et le numéro de téléphone de chaque auteur
de contact, la langue de la présentation ou de l'affiche (anglais ou
français), le titre de l'article et comprendre un résumé de moins de
200 mots. Dans le cadre de la publication des résultats de l'atelier,
les auteurs pourraient être invités à soumettre des articles complets
afin de les intégrer à une édition spéciale de revue.

Appel de candidatures pour les prix Synapse des IRSC 2011

Chaque année, les IRSC décernent trois prix afin de souligner
l'importance des mentors dans la formation de la nouvelle génération
de chercheurs en santé au Canada. Les Prix Synapse des IRSC rendent
hommage aux personnes qui contribuent de façon exceptionnelle à la
promotion de la recherche en santé auprès d'élèves canadiens des
niveaux intermédiaire et secondaire.

L'un des prix décernés, une bourse d'une valeur de 10 000 $, est
accordé à une équipe de recherche en santé qui a participé à des
activités de sensibilisation des jeunes afin d'appuyer ses activités
de mentorat futures. Les deux autres prix, de 5 000 $ chacun, sont
remis à un chercheur en santé qui a pris part à des activités de
sensibilisation des jeunes, ainsi qu'à un étudiant à la maîtrise ou au
doctorat, ou encore à un boursier postdoctoral, qui participe à des
activités de mentorat.

Appel de candidatures : Conseil consultatif ministériel sur
l'Initiative fédérale de lutte contre le VIH/sida au Canada

Le Conseil consultatif ministériel sur l'Initiative fédérale de lutte
contre le VIH/sida au Canada regroupe des gens qui possèdent une
grande expertise, collective et individuelle, dans le domaine du
VIH/sida et qui sont nommés par la ministre fédérale de la Santé. Il a
pour mandat de conseiller la ministre sur des aspects pancanadiens du
VIH/sida.

Au nom de la ministre de la Santé, l'Agence de la santé publique du
Canada cherche des candidats pour renouveler le Conseil consultatif
ministériel sur l'Initiative fédérale de lutte contre le VIH/sida au
Canada (le Conseil).

Le processus de sélection vise à garantir que les membres du Conseil
possèdent une expertise variée leur permettant d'étudier les aspects
essentiels du VIH/sida au Canada.

Si vous avez déjà posé votre candidature et que vous souhaitez qu'elle
soit de nouveau prise en considération, il vous faudra la représenter.
La ministre de la Santé prend toutes les décisions concernant les
nominations au Conseil.

Cette liste n'est pas exhaustive et ne saurait rendre compte de tous
les champs d'expertise liés au VIH/sida. Tout autre champ d'expertise
ou d'expérience englobant plus d'un secteur devrait être mentionné
dans la candidature.

Il faut noter que, dans le cadre de l'évaluation des candidatures, au
moins cinq sièges seront attribués à des personnes atteintes du
VIH/sida.
On tiendra également compte de la diversité ethnoculturelle et on
cherchera à bien représenter les femmes et les hommes et les
différentes régions.
Voici les tâches des membres du Conseil.

* Fournir à la ministre de la Santé des conseils stratégiques
reposant sur des faits sur divers aspects pancanadiens du VIH/sida.
* Participer pleinement aux réunions du Conseil (trois par année).
* Participer pleinement aux téléconférences du Conseil.
* Faire partie d'au moins un des sous-comités du Conseil.
* Avoir une réflexion stratégique sur l'épidémie de VIH/sida au Canada.
* S'élever au-dessus des intérêts particuliers de l'organisation
à laquelle ils peuvent être affiliés et contribuer à établir une
vision et une stratégie pancanadiennes pour l'Initiative fédérale de
lutte contre le VIH/sida au Canada.
* Être prêts et aptes à communiquer idées et enjeux au sein d'un groupe.

L'Agence de la santé publique du Canada paie tous les coûts associés
aux déplacements, aux repas, à l'accueil et aux téléconférences,
conformément aux directives du Conseil du Trésor.
