Public health and environmental health professionals, researchers,
policy-makers, academics and students from across the country and around
the world will meet in Edmonton, Alberta for the 2012 Annual Conference of
the Canadian Public Health Association (CPHA).

Expert Panel on Canada's Strategic Role in Global Health
An Expert Panel of leading Canadian and international global health
experts completed a year-long process to evaluate Canada's strategic role
in global health. The report, entitled Canadians Making a Difference: The
Expert Panel on Canada's Strategic Role in Global Health (
http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?OymT-O5Dg-kUMFF1 ) , identifies five
roles in which there is an opportunity for Canada to have significant
global impact: a) indigenous and circumpolar health research; b) public
health programs and research on social determinants of health; c)
community-based primary health care; d) partnerships with developing
countries in education and research; and e) global health innovation.
CIHR is making substantial investments in global health research and is a
partner in the Global Health Research Initiative, which aims to tackle
complex world health problems. Dr. Nancy Edwards, Scientific Director of
the CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health, was a witness of the
Expert Panel commissioned by the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences.
Implementing a Schedule for the Retention of Information on ResearchNet
Please be advised that a schedule for the retention of ResearchNet data
will be implemented as follows, effective December 10th, 2011:
All submitted application activities and documents will be retained for
one year after the application decision has been released.
All withdrawn applications will be retained for one year after decisions
for the competition have been posted.
All incomplete and non-submitted applications will be retained for three
months after the competition deadline date.
All review activities and documents will be retained for eighteen months
after the decisions for the application have been posted.
All decision and post-decisions activities and documents will be retained
for eighteen months after the related application decisions.
Information on the Retention Schedule will be permanently available on the
ResearchNet homepage ( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?OymT-O5Dh-kUMFF2 )
. Should users of ResearchNet wish to keep any documents for future
reference, we suggest that they download the PDF (Portable Document
Format) of the documents to another storage area (e.g., the hard drive of

Network Catalyst
CIHR will provide support for the creation and/or further development of
formal networks. The aim of these networks will be to facilitate the
pooling of resources to support innovative research and practices, to
build capacity and to provide a forum for discussing ideas, sharing best
practices and consulting on challenges. This opportunity will provide
funding for networks that demonstrate a capacity to advance work in
priority research areas.

Collaborative Centres in HIV/AIDS Community-based Research
On July 26th, 2011, the CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative launched the new
Collaborative Centres in HIV/AIDS Community-based Research. This new
funding tool is the result of feedback gatheredduring consultations with
the HIV/AIDS CBR community and was developed with the guidance of the
HIV/AIDS CBR Steering Committee. The objectives of this new funding
opportunity are to support, evolve and expand the collaborative work
between existing HIV/AIDS national structures with regional and/or
provincial HIV/AIDS Community Based Organizations and researchers in order
to foster the national coordination of HIV/AIDS Community Based Research
efforts.

The Ontario Women's Health Scholars Awards 2012-2013
The Ontario Women's Health Scholars Award is administered by the Ontario
Council of Graduate Studies on behalf of Ontario government ministries. It
is open to Master's students, Doctoral students, and Post Doctoral
Fellows. Funded by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, a
Scholar Awards Program in Women's Health has been established to ensure
that Ontario attracts and retains pre-eminent women's health scholars.
"Echo" is an agency of the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, and
replaces the Ontario Women's Health Council. The community of women's
health scholars fostered by this Awards program will excel, according to
internationally accepted standards of scientific excellence, in the
creation of new knowledge about women's health and its translation into
improved health for women, more effective health services and products for
women, and a strengthened health care system.

CQ Doctoral Dissertation Award: Methodological Excellence in Qualitative
Doctoral Dissertation
This award is given by the University of Toronto's Centre for Critical
Qualitative Health Research (

promote and acknowledge the achievements of doctoral graduates who have
completed exemplary qualitative research in the health sciences at
University of Toronto. The recipient of the award will receive an Award
Certificate which will be announced on the CQ listserv and website, and
conferred at the opening CQ Speaker Series event early in the fall.
Recipients will be invited to present their submission at a special
session of the Speaker Series.

Dr. Jill M. Saunders Award of Excellence in Health Technology Assessment
The Dr. Jill M. Sanders Award of Excellence in HTA (

celebrates individuals whose outstanding achievements have significantly
advanced the field of health technology assessment in Canada. The winner
of this award will receive a plaque, paid travel and accommodation, and

and lasting contribution to health technology assessment, evidence-based
drug reviews, or optimal technology utilization in Canada.

Assistant Professor in Qualitative Health Sciences Education Research
The Centre for Medical Education is seeking an individual to develop a
research program in Health Sciences Education using a range of approaches
and methods from a social science and/or humanities perspective, with a
particular strength in qualitative methods. This individual will be
expected to develop an independent research program in health sciences
education, help to expand research capacity at the Centre for Medical
Education, and serve as a resource to members of the Centre and the
Faculty of Medicine. He or she will be expected to conduct high quality
research, publish in peer-reviewed journals, obtain external peer-reviewed
funding for research, teach and supervise students, and engage with the
community of educational researchers at the Centre for Medical Education.

Le Comité d'experts sur le rôle stratégique du Canada en santé mondiale
Un comité d'experts chevronnés en santé mondiale provenant du Canada et
d'ailleurs dans le monde a récemment complété un processus d'évaluation
reposant sur des données probantes pour analyser le rôle stratégique du
Canada en santé mondiale. Le rapport intitulé Des Canadiens qui font une
différence – le Comité d'experts sur le rôle stratégique du Canada en
santé mondiale ( http://trk.cp20.com/Tracking/t.c?OymT-O5ER-kUMFF1 )
identifie cinq rôles qui permettraient au Canada d'avoir un impact notable
à l'échelle mondiale : a) la recherche sur la santé des Autochtones et la
santé circumpolaire, b) la santé des populations et la santé publique, c)
les soins de santé primaires axés sur les communautés, d) les partenariats
judicieux en éducation et en recherche sur la santé, et e) l'innovation en
santé mondiale.
Les IRSC effectuent des investissements substantiels en recherche en santé
mondiale et sont partenaire de l'Initiative de recherche en santé
mondiale, une initiative visant à s'attaquer aux complexes problèmes de
santé mondiale. Dre Nancy Edwards, Directrice scientifique de l'Institut
de la santé publique et des populations des IRSC, était témoin au comité
d'experts nommés par l'Académie canadienne des sciences de la santé.

RechercheNet entrera en vigueur le 10 décembre 2011 :
Toutes les activités et tous les documents relatifs aux demandes soumises
seront conservés pendant un an après la publication des décisions pour les
demandes visées.
Toutes les demandes retirées seront conservées pendant un an suivant

Réseau catalyseur
Les IRSC appuieront la création de réseaux et/ou le développement de
réseaux officiels. Le but de ces réseaux sera de faciliter la mise en
commun de ressources pour soutenir la recherche et les pratiques

Centres de collaboration pour la recherche communautaire sur le VIH/sida
Le 26 juillet 2011, l'Initiative de recherche sur le VIH/sida a lancé les
nouveaux Centres de collaboration pour la recherche communautaire sur le
VIH/sida. Ce nouvel outil de financement est le fruit des commentaires
reçus au cours des consultations tenues avec le milieu de la recherche
communautaire. Il a été élaboré avec l'aide du Comité directeur de la
recherche communautaire (RC). Cette nouvelle possibilité de financement a
pour objectif de faire progresser et d'étendre le travail de collaboration
entre les structures nationales existantes sur le VIH/sida et les
organismes communautaires régionaux et/ou provinciaux de lutte contre le
VIH/sida et les chercheurs afin de favoriser la coordination nationale des
efforts de recherche communautaire sur le VIH/sida.

Programme d'appui communautaire (PACI) de l'Institut de la santé publique
et des populations (ISPP) 2011-2012
Les instituts des IRSC recourent au PACI pour fournir des
subventions/bourses à des personnes et à des organisations appartenant à
leurs milieux respectifs, afin qu'elles s'en servent pour : fournir des
subventions ou des bourses pour des activités de recherche et
d'application des connaissances qui ne sont pas couvertes par les autres
programmes des IRSC ; et appuyer des organismes et des individus dont les
buts concordent avec la vision, le mandat et les orientations stratégiques
