On November 17, Jack Mintz, Palmer Chair in public policy at the
University of Calgary's Faculty of Law, will present "The World
Economic Outlook: Implications for Canadian fiscal policy." Mintz
will examine the current economic climate and the options available

2. Big Thinking goes "on the road" to Kitchener-Waterloo
In anticipation of Congress 2012, CFHSS is taking our Big Thinking
series to Kitchener-Waterloo. On November 10, Darin Barney, Canada
Research Chair in Technology and Citizenship at McGill University,
and Barbara Crow, Associate Dean of Research in the Faculty of
Liberal Arts & Professional Studies at York University, will discuss
"Canadians at the Crossroads: How technology challenges us to
change." The talk will be moderated by Kevin Tuer, Managing Director
of the Canadian Digital Media Network and Vice-President, Digital
Media for Communitech.
We will also be announcing seven of our Congress 2012 Big Thinkers at

5. CFHSS at the Canadian Science Policy Conference November 16 to 18
The Canadian Science Policy Conference is taking place in Ottawa from
November 16 to 18. CFHSS has organized a panel entitled "How do we
build resilient communities in the face of climate change?" The panel
will be moderated by James Baxter, the founding editor and publisher
of iPolitics, and it will feature Frances Abele, Academic Director of
the Carleton Centre for Community Innovation, Gordon McBean, Research
Chair at the Institute of Catastrophic Loss Reduction, University of
Western Ontario, Ian Mauro, Canada Research Chair in Human Dimensions
of Environmental Change at Mount Allison University, and Jamal
Shirley, Manager of Research Design and Policy Development at the
Iqaluit Research Centre of the Nunavut Research Institute. You can

7. European scholars call for a broad social sciences and
humanities-centred research program
CFHSS has signed an open letter from the European Federation of
National Academies of Sciences and Humanities (ALLEA), and other
organizations, to the European Commissioner for Research and
Innovation, Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, pledging for more funding in the
next EU Framework Programme (2014-2020), Horizon 2020. In this
letter, ALLEA and its partners express worries that not enough
funding might be dedicated to humanities and social sciences in the
next Framework Programme, undermining efforts from Europe to tackle
social challenges.
Proposing, in Understanding Europe in a global context: transitions
towards innovation societies, a robust social sciences and
humanities-centred research program, the organizations calls Horizon
2020 for a more integrated perspective.
Anyone who thinks that research in humanities should be more funded
to fully contribute to the society is invited to sign.

7. Des chercheurs europÉens demandent un programme de recherche
d'envergure, axÉ sur les sciences humaines
La FCSH a signÉ une lettre ouverte, de la FÉdÉration europÉenne
des acadÉmies nationales des sciences et sciences humaines (ALLEA)
et d'autres organisations, À la commissaire europÉenne À la
recherche et l'innovation, Maire Geoghegan-Quinn, pour plaider en
faveur d'un plus grand financement dans le cadre du programme-cadre
de l'UE (2014-2020) pour la recherche et l'innovation, Horizon 2020.
Dans cette lettre, ALLEA et ses partenaires expriment leurs craintes
de voir un financement pour les sciences humaines insuffisant, ce qui
nuirait aux efforts europÉens pour faire face aux dÉfis sociaux.
Dans le document Understanding Europe in a global context:
transitions towards innovation societies, le groupe propose un solide
programme de recherche axÉ sur les sciences humaines, et demande une
perspective plus intÉgrÉe pour Horizon 2020.
Tous ceux qui croient que la recherche en sciences humaines devrait
Être mieux financÉe pour contribuer encore plus À la sociÉtÉ
