ORIGINS OF CREE SYLLABICS CONFERENCE, JUNE 4-5, 2013, EDMONTON, ALBERTA

ORIGINS OF CREE SYLLABICS CONFERENCE, JUNE 4-5, 2013, EDMONTON, ALBERTA

We are hosting the first Origins of Cree Syllabics Conference 4 & 5 June,
2013. Please visit
http://www.cfrac.com/training/origins-of-cree-syllabics-conference for more
info.

The Truth and Reconciliation Council stated in their Interim Report:
They want their languages and their traditions. With tremendous effort,
people have sought out traditional teachings and practices, and worked at
preserving endangered languages. They want the institutions that
invested so much over many decades in undermining their cultures to invest
now in restoring them.

We hope our combined efforts contributes to the movement that keeps our
languages and our history alive. It is also our Hope that this conference
gives other Cree people the knowledge of Cree Syllabics and they can then
bring it home to their families and communities. We are privileged to have
Elder Jerry Saddleback as lecturer for this Conference.

Elder Jerry Saddleback Sr. is from Samson Cree Nation in Hobbema, AB. He is
one of a handful of people who can recite the History of Creation Story and
one of fewer people who knows the true history of the Origins of Cree
Syllabics. His profound knowledge about Cree history and traditions conveys
a powerful sense of intellectual and Spiritual insights into Cree Culture.
Elder Jerry Saddleback is in high demand as a speaker and travels all over
Canada as requested by communities, educational institutions and other
organizations such as Truth and Reconciliation. Mr. Saddleback has such
passion and commitment to tell the story of our History that the listener
will retain the knowledge; the work he does as an educator, as an academic
and as an Elder speaks for itself. He is truly a dynamic Storyteller and
compassionate Teacher. Mr. Saddleback is currently the Elder-In-Residence
and Dean of Cultural Studies at the Maskwacis Cultural College in Hobbema
(from Aboriginal Women's Justice Annual Report).
