Message from CIHR President - Analysis of Feedback on the CIHR Design
Discussion Document
It's been five months since the release of the Design Discussion
Document describing the proposed reforms to CIHR's Open Suite of
Programs and peer review process. During the consultation period, the
research community and our stakeholders provided us with many
thoughtful, frank and candid comments, as well as constructive
suggestions. All individual comments and questions received were
captured and are being analyzed to help inform the design.

I am pleased to announce the publication of the What CIHR Heard:
Analysis of Feedback on the Design Discussion Document. This document
presents a summary of the feedback received through a number of
consultation methods (face-to-face meetings including institution town
halls, an online survey, discussion forum, emails and letters received
from the community).

The Feedback Analysis Report is available on the CIHR website along
with a set of questions and answers.

We would ask that you forward any questions or comments you receive to
Roadmap-Plan.Strategique@cihr-irsc.gc.ca. If you are contacted by the

Putting a roof over inadequate housing: Home Safe Toronto Documentary
Screening and Panel Discussion
Please join us to watch inspiring clips from the SkyWorks documentary
Home Safe Toronto which delves into the lives of some of Toronto's
families who are struggling to keep a roof over their heads, put food
on their plates, and stay healthy.

Following the film segments, take part in an interactive discussion
with researchers about the evidence on inadequate housing, health
outcomes, and food insecurity and hear from participants featured in
the film.

This free event is hosted by the Canadian Institutes of Health
Research – Institute of Population and Public Health in partnership
with SkyWorks Charitable Foundation.

CPHA 2013 Annual Conference Program

Preparations for CPHA's 2013 Annual Conference are well underway. In
an effort to plan a program that will resonate with public health
professionals, researchers, policy-makers, academics and students, the
CPHA Conference Steering Committee is seeking input from previous
conference delegates to prioritize the potential conference tracks
that will inform the development of the scientific program. In
addition, we are asking for your opinion on which cross-cutting themes
could showcase presentations from various disciplines on relevant
issues.

To assist in prioritizing the list of potential tracks and
cross-cutting themes, please complete a short survey by Friday,
September 7.

Population Health Intervention Research (Fall 2012 Competition)
The CIHR Institute of Population and Public Health is pleased to
announce the launch of the Operating Grant: Population Health
Intervention Research competition. This Initiative is being funded in
partnership with the CIHR Ethics Office and CIHR Institutes of
Aboriginal Peoples' Health and Nutrition, Metabolism and Diabetes,
Musculoskeletal Health and Arthritis, Cancer Research, the Canadian
Cancer Society, the Canadian Institute for Health Information –
Canadian Population Health Initiative, the New Brunswick Health
Research Foundation.

The purpose of this funding opportunity is to support the prompt
initiation of population health intervention research on rapidly
unfolding programs, policies and resource distribution approaches that
have been initiated by others (e.g., policy makers) and have the
potential to impact health and health equity at the population level.
This funding opportunity has a two-step application process: Phase 1
requires you to complete a Letter of Intent (LOI) and Phase 2 requires
you to complete an Application upon invitation. More information about

Renewed Canadian Common CV (CCV) for CIHR
CIHR recognizes that moving to the new Common CV presents a
significant change for the research community and that there are a
number of challenges with the revised system. The CCV team is working
to address the system issues that have been identified since the
renewed Common CV was launched. Information and tips are available

Canadian Conference on Global Health
Global Health in the Shifting World Economy — October 21-23, 2012.
Ottawa, ON. Delta City Centre Hotel

The theme "Global Health in a Shifting World Economy" will
specifically be examining:
— The growing economic crisis in Europe and the impact on social
welfare programs;
— Private/public partnerships;
— Economic growth with growing inequities in health;
— The role of state capitalism and the infusion of development aid;
— Existing and evolving global inequities in health and their expected
and unexpected impacts on the world's marginalized and vulnerable
populations, including indigenous groups.

Plenary sessions and topic-focused symposia will be followed by
workshops, special sessions, and oral and poster sessions to help
facilitate knowledge dissemination in areas of global shifts in the
economy and global health equity in local, national, and global
contexts.

The CIHR HIV/AIDS Research Initiative, led by the CIHR Institute of
Infection and Immunity, is pleased to announce a number of funding
opportunities launched in June 2012.

2012-13 CIHR-IPPH Institute Community Support (ICS) Program
The ICS is designed to foster community development by providing
grants and awards (including travel awards) to individuals and
organizations for the purposes of:
— Aiding research and knowledge translation activities where the
circumstances fall outside CIHR's programs
— Supporting organizations and activities whose goals are consistent
with the Institute's and CIHR's vision, mandate and strategic directions

Launch of CIHR Open Operating Grant Competition
The CIHR Open Operating Grant Program (OOGP) provides operating funds
to support research proposals in all areas of health research
including randomized controlled trials. A randomized controlled trial
(RCT) is an experiment in which investigators randomly assign eligible
human research participants or other units of study (e.g., classrooms,
clinics, playgrounds) into groups to receive or not receive one or
more interventions that are being compared. The results are analyzed
by comparing outcomes in the groups.

Implementation Research Platform
The Implementation Research Platform is pleased to announce a call for
proposals to support implementation research that contributes to the
scale-up of effective health interventions related to MDGs 4, 5 and 6
in one of the following three priority areas:
— Strategies to facilitate the integration of services to result in
improved health outcomes and greater efficiencies
— Strategies to improve the performance of health workers to deliver
quality services
— Strategies for community engagement to increase awareness of, access
to, and utilization of health services, and provision of appropriate
services at the community level

Grand Challenges Canada: Stars in Global Health Round 4
This unique program enables innovators in low- and lower-middle-income
countries and Canada to develop their bold idea with big impact to
improve global health conditions. Awards are initially valued at
$100,000 CAD for up to 12-18 months to demonstrate proof-of-concept of
the idea. Upon successful review of proposals at 12-18 months after
the initial award is granted, scale-up grants of up to $1 million CAD
may be awarded with potential linkages to private sector investments.

European Commission 7th Framework Program (FP7)
The European Commission has launched the last call for proposals under
the 7th Framework Program. The objective of health research under FP7
is to improve the health of European citizens and boost the
competitiveness of health-related industries and businesses, as well
as address global health issues. Priority will be given to the
following activities:
— Biotechnology, generic tools and technologies for human health -
producing knowledge that will be applied in the area of health and
medicine
— Translating research for human health - making sure that basic
discoveries have practical benefits and improve the quality of life
— Optimising the delivery of health care to European citizens -
ensuring that the results of biomedical research will ultimately reach
the citizens

WHO Special Programme for Research and Training in Tropical Diseases
The World Health Organisation's Special Programme for Research and
Training in Tropical Diseases (TDR), with IDRC funding, is launching a
call for letters of interest as part of its research initiative on
vector-borne diseases and climate change in Africa. This initiative
aims to build an evidence base on the connections between vector-borne
diseases and the environmental, socio-economic, and socio-political
risks and vulnerabilities that increase the impact of climate change.
The research will help developing countries create strategies for
anticipating, preventing, or reducing these risks. Grants of up to
$600,000 USD will be awarded to carry out cutting-edge research in
Africa.

Canadian Society for International Health Lifetime Achievement Award
All members of the Canadian Society for International Health are
invited to submit one or more nominations for the CSIH 2012 Lifetime
Achievement Award. The purpose of this award is to publicly recognize

field of international health throughout their career. This Award will
be presented to the recipient at the Society's annual Canadian

CIHR Healthcare Renewal Policy Analysis
This Healthcare Renewal Policy Analysis funding opportunity welcomes
prospective and retrospective policy analyses and comparative policy
analysis is strongly encouraged. Health policy analyses may draw upon
new and/or existing research, including qualitative research,
quantitative research, or mixed methods research (e.g. statistical
analysis, case studies, key informant interviews, polling, survey
research, economic evaluation, etc.).

2013 Canada Gairdner International Awards
The award recognizes outstanding biomedical scientists who have made
original contributions to medicine with the goal of contributing
through research to increased understanding of human biology and
disease. It also recognizes an original, seminal contribution or

scientific community to nominate qualified scientists from any branch
of biomedicine.

The CIHR Institute of Gender and Health is announcing the launch of
the Gender, Work and Health Chair Program. The specific objectives of
Gender, Work and Health Chair Program are:

— To build capacity for research on work and health that accounts for
gender and sex
— To foster the translation of that research into gender- and
sex-sensitive policies and interventions that improve workers' health

CIHR Health Challenges in Chronic Inflammation Initiative - Team Grant
The overall goal of the Roadmap Signature Initiative - Inflammation in
Chronic Disease is to develop a unified Canadian strategy on
inflammation that will support health research for the discovery and
validation of common biomarkers, therapeutic targets, and inflammatory
mechanisms among chronic diseases, with the ultimate goal to prevent
and /or treat chronic disease by reducing inflammation and pain
through novel interventions. In order to reach this goal, and
following an extensive period of consultation with the Canadian

Message du président des IRSC / Analyse de la rétroaction sur le
document de travail conceptuel des IRSC
Cinq mois se sont écoulés depuis la publication du Document de travail
conceptuel décrivant les réformes proposées de la série de programmes
ouverts des IRSC et du processus d'évaluation par les pairs. Durant la
période de consultation, le milieu de la recherche et les intervenants
nous ont transmis plusieurs commentaires judicieux et francs, ainsi
que des suggestions constructives. Tous les commentaires et les
questions ont été consignés et sont en cours d'analyse afin d'aider à
orienter la conception.

Aujourd'hui, c'est avec plaisir que j'annonce la publication du
document Les IRSC à votre écoute : Analyse de la rétroaction sur le
document de travail conceptuel. Ce document contient un résumé de la
rétroaction reçue au moyen de plusieurs méthodes de consultation (des
rencontres en personne, dont des séances de discussion ouverte dans
les établissements, un sondage en ligne, un forum de discussion ainsi
que des courriels et des lettres).

Le Rapport d'analyse des commentaires se trouve sur le site Web des
IRSC, accompagné d'une série de questions et réponses.

Nous sommes conscients que plusieurs d'entre vous travaillent
directement avec des membres de la communauté et que ces derniers

documentaire Home Safe Toronto de SkyWorks qui scrute la vie de
certaines familles de Toronto qui ont de la difficulté à se trouver un
toit, à mettre des aliments sur la table et à demeurer en santé.

Après la présentation des parties du film, prenez part à une
discussion interactive avec des chercheurs sur des données concernant
les piètres conditions de logement, les résultats sur le plan de la
santé et l'insécurité alimentaire, et venez entendre les participants
en vedette dans le film.

Programme de la Conférence annuelle 2013 de l'ACSP
Les préparatifs en vue de la Conférence annuelle 2013 de l'ACSP vont
bon train. En vue de planifier un programme qui saura répondre aux
attentes des professionnels de la santé publique, des chercheurs, des
décideurs, des universitaires et des étudiants, le comité directeur de
la conférence de l'ACSP sollicite l'apport des délégués des
conférences antérieures pour prioriser les pistes potentielles de la
Conférence qui éclaireront l'élaboration du programme scientifique. En
outre, nous demandons à connaître votre avis sur les thèmes
transversaux qui pourraient mettre en vitrines des présentations des
diverses disciplines sur des questions pertinentes.

Pour aider à prioriser la liste des pistes potentielles et des thèmes
transversaux, veuillez remplir un bref questionnaire d'ici le vendredi

Recherche interventionnelle en santé des populations (Concours d'automne
2012)
L'Institut de la santé publique et des populations des IRSC a le
plaisir d'annoncer le lancement du concours de Subvention de
fonctionnement : Recherche interventionnelle en santé des populations.
Cette Initiative est subventionnée en partenariat avec le Bureau de
l'éthique des IRSC, l'Institut de la santé des Autochtones, de la
nutrition, du métabolisme et du diabète, de l'appareil locomoteur et
de l'arthrite, du cancer, L'Institut canadien d'information sur la
santé — Initiative sur la santé de la population canadienne, La
Société canadienne du cancer, La Fondation de la recherche en santé du
Nouveau-Brunswick.

La présente possibilité de financement vise à soutenir le lancement
rapide de projets de recherche interventionnelle en santé des
populations sur des programmes, des politiques et des approches de
distribution des ressources qui évoluent rapidement, qui ont été mis
en oeuvre par d'autres (p. ex. décideurs) et qui pourraient avoir un
impact sur la santé et l'équité en matière de santé au niveau des
populations. Le processus de présentation d'une demande pour cette
opportunité de financement contient deux étapes : L'étape 1 exige que
vous complétiez une lettre d'intention (LDI). L'étape 2 exige que vous
soumettiez une présentation d'une demande sur invitation. Les
instructions concernant ces deux étapes se retrouvent dans la section
« Comment faire une demande » de cette opportunité de financement.

Le nouveau CV commun canadien (CVC) des IRSC
Les IRSC reconnaissent que la migration vers le nouveau CV commun
représente un changement important pour le milieu de la recherche et
que le système révisé amène de nombreux défis. Que l'équipe du CVC
travaille à régler les problèmes cernés depuis le lancement du nouveau
CV commun. Les renseignements et les conseils suivants sont
disponibles ici et ici.

Un seul concours par année pour le Programme de bourses de recherche des IRSC
Dans le but d'harmoniser l'échéancier du concours des bourses de
recherche des IRSC avec leurs homologues fédéraux, le CRSNG et le
CRSH, on n'acceptera les demandes qu'une fois par année au concours de
bourses de recherche des IRSC à compter de l'automne 2013 (c.-à-d. en
octobre). Malgré ce changement, le nombre de bourses de recherche
accordées sera maintenu à environ 170 par année et le budget global
affecté à ce programme ne changera pas. Il sera de 21 millions de
dollars sur cinq ans.

Conférence canadienne sur la santé mondiale
Santé internationale dans une économie mondiale en mouvance — Du 21 au
23 octobre 2012. Ottawa, Ontario.

Le thème : « Santé internationale dans une économie mondiale en
mouvance » abordera plus spécifiquement :
— La crise économique croissante en Europe et son impact sur les
programmes de sécurité sociale
— Les partenariats publics-privés;
— La croissance économique accompagnée d'inégalités plus marquées sur
le plan de la santé;
— Le rôle du capitalisme d'état et l'aide au développement;
— Les inégalités en matière de santé dans le monde, leur évolution et
leurs répercussions connues et inconnues sur les populations
marginalisées et vulnérables, y compris les populations autochtones.

Des plénières et des symposiums ciblés seront suivis d'ateliers, de
séances spéciales, d'exposés et de présentations d'affiches pour
renseigner les congressistes sur les changements qui affectent
l'économie mondiale et jouent sur l'égalité en matière de santé à
l'échelle locale, nationale et internationale.

L'Initiative de recherche sur le VIH/sida des IRSC, dirigée par
l'Institut des maladies infectieuses et immunitaires des IRSC est
heureuse d'annoncer plusieurs possibilités de financement lancées en
juin 2012.

Programme d'appui communautaire (PACI) de l'Institut de la santé
publique et des populations (ISPP) 2012-13
Les instituts des IRSC recourent au PACI pour fournir des
subventions/bourses à des personnes et à des organisations appartenant
à leurs milieux respectifs, afin qu'elles s'en servent pour :
— Fournir des subventions ou des bourses pour des activités de
recherche et d'application des connaissances qui ne sont pas couvertes
par les autres programmes des IRSC
— Appuyer des organismes et des individus dont les buts concordent

Grands Défis Canada : Les étoiles en santé mondiale ronde 4
Ce programme unique permet à des innovateurs de pays à revenu faible
ou intermédiaire inférieur et du Canada de développer leur idée
audacieuse ayant un grand impact en vue d'améliorer la situation de la
santé dans le monde. Le montant initial des subventions est fixé à
100,000 $ CAD pour une période allant de 12 à 18 mois en vue de faire
la démonstration de principe du concept à la base de l'idée. Les
propositions qui auront franchi avec succès l'étape de l'examen au
terme de cette période de 12 à 18 mois seront admissibles à une
subvention de déploiement à l'échelle pouvant aller jusqu'à 1 million
$ CAD et profiter de liens éventuels avec des investissements du

OMS Initiative de recherche de TDR/CRDI
Grâce à un appui financier du Centre de recherches pour le
développement international (CRDI), le Programme spécial de recherche
et de formation concernant les maladies tropicales (TDR) de
l'Organisation mondiale de la santé lance un appel à lettres
d'intention dans le cadre de son initiative de recherche sur les
maladies à transmission vectorielle et sur les changements climatiques
en Afrique. Cette dernière vise à constituer une assise de données
probantes sur les liens entre les maladies à transmission vectorielle
et les facteurs de risque et de vulnérabilité d'ordre environnemental,
socioéconomique et sociopolitique qui aggravent les répercussions des
changements climatiques. Les travaux de recherche aideront les pays en
développement à créer des stratégies d'anticipation, de prévention ou
d'atténuation de ces risques. Des subventions allant jusqu'à 600,000 $
CAD seront octroyées aux fins de l'exécution de travaux de recherche
de pointe en Afrique.

Le programme PASS vise à renforcer le système de santé du Canada au

The Cuban Society of Philosophical Research, the Division of
Philosophy and History of the University of Havana, and the Raúl Roa
García Higher Institute of International Relations

The Fifteenth International Conference on "New Political Science" and
the Seventh International Colloquium on "The role of philosophy and
political science in the cultural heritage of the countries of the
American Mediterranean."

The New Political Science is being developed by Cuban and
international professors affiliated with the Division of Philosophy
and History of the University of Havana and with Dr. Thalía Fung, Head
of the School of "Political Science from the South" of the University
of Havana. It is a transdisciplinary initiative, including scholars
in the disciplines of political science, economics, history,
philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. It seeks to develop an
analysis of international dynamics and global issues from the
perspective of the global South or the Third World. It endeavors to
develop insights that are relevant to public policies and political
strategies of the nations and social movements of the South.

The Conference and Colloquium will be held jointly as a single event
at the University of Havana from November 14 to November 16, 2012.
During the event, the International Day of Philosophy (November 16)
will be celebrated in the Aula Magna of the University of Havana.

Papers can be presented in English or Spanish. Faculty of the English
department of the Division of Modern Foreign Languages of the
University of Havana will provide simultaneous translations.

Paper proposals (in English or Spanish), including a paper title and a
summary of 250 words or less, should be sent by October 15, 2012, to
Charles McKelvey (cemck@terra.com).

Papers on the following themes can be included in the International
Conference on "New Political Science":
~ The purpose, methods, and concepts of the new political
science (social science, history, and philosophy) from the perspective
of the South or the Third World; its role in the construction of a new
society.

~ Political culture and political socialization in the period of
transition to socialism.

~ Conflict resolution: the significance of negotiation in
conflicts among the countries of the South.

~ International dynamics and contemporary global issues.

~ Domestic policy and foreign policy.

~ The political thought of Mao Tse Tung.

~ The political thought of Ho Chi Minh and the Doi Moi policy of
Vietnam.

~ The contributions of the Bolivarian revolution to the new
political science from the South

~ The contributions of Evo Morales, Hugo Chávez, and Rafael
Correa to contemporary political theory

~ The contributions of the Cuban Revolution to the new political
science from the South
José Martí and the new political science from the South.

~ The relation between philosophy and political science; between
philosophy and social science.

~ Corruption: History and mechanisms.

~ Papers on other relevant themes will be considered.


Paper proposals for the International Colloquium on "The role of
philosophy and political science in the cultural heritage of the
countries of the American Mediterranean" can include the following
themes:
~ Problems of the philosophy of education and its present challenges.

~ Epistemology: the significance of atomic particles for
scientific and philosophical knowledge.

~ The biometric revolution.

~ Environmental problems and their philosophical implications.

~ Bioethics and the relation between bioethics and philosophy.
The meaning of transhumanism.

~ Political philosophy and its role in current scientific knowledge.

~ The Martían philosophy as an inclusive philosophy.

~ Papers on other relevant themes will be considered.

The registration fee is 100 Cuban Convertible Pesos (approximately
equivalent to 120 U.S. dollars). The fee for students is 50 Cuban
Convertible Pesos.

Participants will have the option of participating in one of three
pre-conference workshops to be held on November 12 and November 13.
The workshops will be on the following themes:
~ Political science from the South and Western political
science: Complementary or alternative?

~ Bioethics and its relation to philosophy.

~ Methods of theory construction.

The workshop will be conducted by specialists with numerous
publications on the themes. Books on related themes also will be
available.

The registration fee for one of the workshops is 25 Cuban Convertible Pesos.

From Berlin to Ground Zero: The Construction of a Memorial Vernacular

THE JOSEPH AND REBECCA MEYERHOFF ANNUAL LECTURE honors excellence in
research on the Holocaust and fosters dissemination of important, new
Holocaust scholarship. Joseph and Rebecca Meyerhoff of Baltimore,
Maryland, were active philanthropists in the United States and abroad,
focusing especially on Jewish learning and scholarship, music, the arts,
and humanitarian causes. Their children, Eleanor Katz and Harvey M.
Meyerhoff, member and Chairman Emeritus, United States Holocaust Memorial
Council, have endowed this lecture.

JAMES E. YOUNG is distinguished university professor in English and Judaic
Studies at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, and founding director
of the university's Institute for Holocaust, Genocide, and Memory Studies.
Professor Young is the author of numerous articles, reviews, and books,
including At Memory's Edge: After-images of the Holocaust in Contemporary
Art and Architecture (2000); The Texture of Memory (1993), which won the
National Jewish Book Award; and Writing and Rewriting the Holocaust
(1988), which won a Choice Outstanding Book Award. He was appointed by the
Berlin Senate in 1997 to the five-member Findungskommission for Germany's
national "Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe," dedicated in 2005. He
is currently completing an insider's account of the World Trade Center
memorial process, based on his experience on the jury for the World Trade
Center Site Memorial Competition, titled The Stages of Memory at Ground
Zero: A Juror's Report on the World Trade Center Memorial Process. He will
discuss how contemporary memorialization of tragic events has been
influenced by Holocaust memorials.

Forging ahead with its commitment to promote interdisciplinary research

and the Caribbean, York University's Centre for Research on Latin
America and the Caribbean (CERLAC) is hosting its 3^rd Graduate Student
Research Conference on *March 15^th and 16^th , 2013 at York University
in Toronto*.

This conference brings together scholars working on Latin America and
the Caribbean to share their research in a collegial, professional and
friendly environment. The conference organizing committee welcomes
papers, presentation proposals and panel proposals on research focused
on Latin America and the Caribbean. We are seeking a broad range of
playful, critical, engaging, diverse, and dynamic themes that span
across various disciplines including, but not limited to, social
sciences, humanities, fine arts, environmental studies and law and

How to nominate?
Scholars holding a senior position at universities and other research
institutions within the above mentioned academic fields are entitled
to nominate candidates for the Holberg Prize. The Holberg Prize's
Academic Committee will base its assessment on the letters of
nomination which must state the reasons for the nomination (2 to 3
pages). Letters should also contain a brief CV for the candidate and
suggest referees who know the scholar and his/her work. Joint
nominations do not strengthen a candidacy. Nominations are strictly
confidential.

Funded Master's and PhD Research Positions in the Geography/Sociology of
urban branding, human rights, and place

Seeking students for January, 2013 (start dates are flexible)

A research team led by Drs. Jeff Masuda (Department of Environment and
Geography, University of Manitoba), Sonia Bookman (Department of Sociology,
University of Manitoba), and Audrey Kobayashi (Department of Geography,
Queen's University) is seeking qualified graduate students interested in
research in the areas of urban geography or urban sociology.

Student research will contribute to a three-year SSHRC-funded project
entitled "Revitalizing Japantown? A unifying exploration of human rights,
branding, and place in Vancouver's Downtown Eastside." The project aims to
chronicle the lasting legacy of human rights activism in the neighbourhood
as set within the context of its ongoing sociospatial transformation.
Through a combination of archival reclamation, community dialogues, and
arts-aligned knowledge mobilization, we seek to contribute a human rights
narrative to ongoing urban branding schemes taking place amidst the
neighbourhood's revitalization.

We will fund students interested in pursuing studies in the disciplinary
areas of historical geography/sociology, urban geography/sociology, and/or
cultural geography and with a substantive focus on one or more of the
following topics: revitalization, social justice, urban branding, human
rights, participatory action research, and arts-aligned research. Depending
on students experience and interest, enrolment will be in either a graduate
program in Geography or Sociology, with supervision tailored to student
interests.

Applicants must have an appropriate background in Human Geography,
Sociology, or a related discipline that meets the entrance requirements of
the graduate programs of our respective institutions. Applicants with
previous research experience or interest in participatory action
research and/or archival research will be particularly competitive as will
those who are capable of contributing to the project deliverables while
also articulating independent but complementary research goals,
particularly at the PhD level.

At least two Master's level students will be guaranteed a minimum stipend
of $12,000 for their first year of study. One PhD student will
be guaranteed a minimum stipend of $16,000 per year for the first year of
study. Funding for subsequent years will be contingent on
performance and on receiving external scholarships. Numerous entrance
awards, scholarships, and assistantships are also available for
competitive applicants.

The deadline for a January, 2013 admission to the Faculty of Graduate
Studies at the University of Manitoba is September 15. Interested
applicants should send a two-page letter of interest and updated CV for
review by the research team no later than August 31st. Positions will be
filled as exceptional applications are received, therefore interested
students are encouraged to apply as soon as possible. Applicants from

The RAI's Body Canvas photo competition aims to:
 
promote public engagement with the RAI's Education Outreach
Programme

provide a platform for people to share their work and become actively
involved in anthropology

develop an understanding for the personal, social and political reasons
why people undergo permanent body modification

explore the many ways in which communities around the world develop and
express relationships with their bodies

explore the industry of body modification, the artists, doctors and
craftsmen who practise their trade
 
 
The submissions we are looking for:

Who can participate?
The competition is open to anyone interested in anthropology,
photography and science communication.

What do contestants win?
All short-listed and winning contestants will have their work
published in RAI online and printed materials. In addition, for each

photograph.

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research, (CIHR), through the Pathways
to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples Signature Initiative is pleased to
be hosting a webinar bringing together policy makers and researchers to
discuss priorities for population health intervention research in
Aboriginal peoples' health to inform policy, program and practice
decisions.
The webinar will focus on the notion of "natural experiments" that could
benefit from researcher expertise and involvement; that is to say, rapidly
unfolding programs, policies and resource distribution approaches that
have been initiated by others (e.g., policy makers) and have the potential
to impact health and health equity at the population level.

Researchers are looking for priorities in policy, program, and practice
that are important to examine using the CIHR Population Health
Intervention Research funding tool. An overview of this and other CIHR
funding mechanisms for this type of research will be provided.
Participants will hear from Carol Hopkins, Executive Director of the
National Native Addictions Partnership Foundation Carol has excellent
knowledge of the policy landscape. A moderated question and answer period
for participants will follow.
CIHR-Institute of Population and Public Health staff will also be
available to answer questions about the Institute's latest funding
opportunity to support population health intervention research as well as
other funding tools that CIHR has to offer.

Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples Signature
Initiative Pathways to Health Equity for Aboriginal Peoples'
overall goal is to develop a better understanding of how to
implement and scale up interventions and programs that will address First
Nations, Inuit and M&eacute;tis (Aboriginal Peoples') health inequities in
four priority areas—suicide, obesity, tuberculosis,
and oral health. This initiative is co-led by the CIHR Institutes of
Aboriginal Peoples' Health; Gender and Health; and Population and
Public Health. Example of a funded population health
intervention research project The Safe Drinking Water for First Nations
Act was implemented across Canada in 2010 to regulate
drinking water and waste water treatment. This legislation is being
studied for its impact on health equity for members of First Nations
communities (led by Cheryl Waldner).

*Call for Papers: Beyond the Culture of Nature: Rethinking Canadian and
Environmental Studies*

Theme Issue of the *Journal of Canadian Studies*

Canadian and Environmental Studies are two fields in transformation.
Initiated
in part as emancipatory projects in the 1970s, seeking to define subjects
and articulate their meanings, the two fields have diverged and been
complicated by shifting ideas about nation and nationalism on the one hand,
and the environment and sustainability on the other. Wilderness once stood
as a central shared concern of the two fields, but constructivist critiques
have highlighted its associations with race, gender, settler societies and
social power, and the discourse of sustainability has transcended
wilderness as a cultural and linguistic artifact, reliant on a binary
vision of nature and culture. This special issue asks what has replaced
the culture of nature that once provided common ground for Canadian and
Environmental Studies? How do area and interdisciplinary studies
intersect, and with what benefits and problems? Does a shared agenda
remain? This special issue will consider the evolving relationship between
Canadian and Environmental Studies scholarship and imagine their
intertwined futures.

Les études canadiennes et les études environnementales sont deux champs en
transformation. Entrepris en partie en tant que projets émancipatoires au
cours des années 1970, cherchant à définir des sujets et à élaborer leurs
significations, ces deux champs d'études ont divergé et se sont
complexifiés en même temps que les notions de nation et de nationalisme,
ainsi que celles d'environnement et de durabilité, se recomposaient.
Autrefois une préoccupation commune de ces deux champs, la nature sauvage (*
wilderness*) est dorénavant associée par les critiques constructivistes à
la race, au genre, aux sociétés coloniales et au pouvoir social. Quant au
discours sur la durabilité, il a transcendé la nature sauvage en tant
qu'artefact culturel et linguistique, tributaire d'une vision binaire de la
nature et de la culture. Le présent numéro spécial s'interroge sur ce qui a
remplacé la culture de la nature en tant que point commun des études
canadiennes et environnementales. Comment est-ce que les études régionales (
*area studies*) et les études interdisciplinaires s'entrecoupent, avec
quels bénéfices et quels problèmes? Existe-t-il encore des points de
convergence? Ce numéro spécial cherche à rassembler les chercheurs en
études canadiennes et environnementales pour discuter et débattre de la
relation entre les deux champs d'études et imaginer un avenir commun.
