CASCA: 2011 Census/recensement 2011

(Version francaise ci-bas)

We are sorry for any inconvenience resulting from problems encountered
with the CASCA membership and listserv email circulation this past
month. We hope these issues have now been addressed. As many of you
will know, the Canadian government intends to cancel the mandatory
long-form questionnaire for the 2011 census. We have attached CASCA's
letter (see below) that was sent to The Honourable Tony Clement in
response last
month.
Martha Radice has kindly provided additional details in her email,
below, and suggests two very good websites that have been keeping
watch on all the census media - one compiled by a geographer, Tracey P
Lauriault: http://datalibre.ca/ and then one at the*CIQSS*(Centre
interuniversitaire québécois de statistiques sociales):
http://www.ciqss.umontreal.ca/fr/recensement2011.html.
We regret any inconvenience to our membership from delayed or dropped
news items. I would like to thank Karli Whitmore, CASCA Membership
Clerk, and Michel Bouchard, Communications Officer, for their tireless
work in resolving this issue.
Wishing you some rest and relaxation for what's left of the summer.
My very best,

Janice Graham
President, CASCA

http://www.ciqss.umontreal.ca/fr/recensement2011.html.
Cordialement,

Janice Graham
Présidente, CASCA

Announcing those sites would give members a couple of reliable websites to
keep up to date with the issue. I've sent our letter to both these sites, so
it should be up there. I've also circulated it to the Canadian Association
of Geographers, whose list-serv has been very active.

L'honorable Tony Clement
Ministre de l'Industrie
Chambre des Communes

M. Clement,

The Honourable Tony Clement
Minister of Industry
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0A6
Dear Mr. Clement,

The Canadian Anthropology Society/La Société canadienne anthropologie
(CASCA) strongly urges you to reverse your government's decision to
cancel the mandatory long-form questionnaire for the 2011 census.
As the association representing over 500 academic and practicing
Canadian anthropologists, CASCA has a mandate to support and advocate
for the necessity of basic and applied research in anthropology and
the social sciences. We are deeply concerned that without the
mandatory longform questionnaire, significant and reliable benchmarks
based upon carefully designed, internationally respected methodologies
reinforced by longitudinal data collection and analysis
will be lost. Many anthropologists rely on the data collected in the
long-form to further explore the values and cultural and social fabric
of Canadian life. In opposition to your July 27, 2010 testimony during
the parliamentary hearings on your government's decision, and using
your own examples, for anthropologists the number of broken bathroom
tiles and the amount of unpaid sick leave that Canadians take are,
indeed, important markers of the complex social, economic
and political dimensions affecting people in this country. Our ability
to better understand the health and well-being of Canadians, their
economic prosperity and their opportunities to advance is central to
our mandate.
The long-form allows us to contrast and compare the descriptive, local
insights gained from our ethnographic research against the extremely
robust statistical data available from the census. In a country where
there is, in fact, very little public oversight of national or local
trends via access and linkage to administrative databases, the census
remains our only viable option in crosschecking the qualitative
research we do with Canadians across the country's diverse
communities. Our work, reinforced by reputable national statistics,
serves to better understand Canadians and their relationships to
health, work, family, neighbourhoods, governments and citizenship.
On behalf of The Canadian Anthropology Society/La Société canadienne
anthropologie (CASCA), I request that you reconsider your position on
the mandatory long-form questionnaire.

Sincerely,

CFP for Curatorial Dreams: Critics Imagine Exhibitions

Call for Papers

Curatorial Dreams: Critics Imagine Exhibitions

Shelley Ruth Butler & Erica Lehrer, eds.

The academic field of museum studies and the practical sphere of
museology are both in a period of intense growth and ferment, yet there
are unexamined and unresolved tensions between the domains of theoretical
reflection and professional practice. Museum criticism is rarely
constructive; the impulse is to find fault with exhibitions, most often
around questions of representation and politics. Thus, a foundational
body of critical museology associates exhibitions with the politics of
exclusion, containment and self-regulation (eg.
Bennett 1995, Duncan 1991, Karp and Lavine, eds. 1991). But these
critiques often threaten and alienate practitioners, who must
negotiate practical and political constraints even as they themselves
attempt to stretch towards new vistas in their exhibitionary practice
(eg. Macdonald 2006, McCarthy 2007). Further, critical and
pessimistic accounts of exhibitionary politics are at odds with the sense
of optimism expressed by many museum educators and museum
mission statements regarding the potential of museums to contribute to an
inclusive and enriching public sphere (Butler 1999).

Curatorial Dreams explores and innovatively bridges these tensions
between theory and practice. In a unique challenge, we ask critics to
respond conceptually, concretely and imaginatively to their own
critiques, inviting them to step into curators? shoes with empathy and
imagination. Specifically, contributors will envision new exhibitions and
interventions inspired by their own critical approaches to
exhibitions in museums and related heritage and public culture sites.

Contributors to this volume will be asked to:

1) Review their critical work on museums and public representations;

2) Outline an imaginary exhibition that responds to these critiques;

3) Use the exercise to reflect on the value of curatorial dreaming for
both critics and practitioners.
Authors will be asked to title their imaginary exhibitions and
interventions, to have specific sites in mind for their work, and to have
examples of artifacts, texts, performances, or other media.
Authors need not walk readers/visitors through an entire exhibition, but
they must be able to evoke key moments of engagement. In some cases,
authors may imagine a process of exhibition development with key
stakeholders and participants. Contributors will be expected to make
their curatorial goals ? typically hidden from the public ?
explicit. In this volume, would-be curators will evaluate their
exhibitionary strategies and hoped for outcomes.

Some critics may propose fanciful exhibitions, while others may offer
more realistic, politically astute plans. But Curatorial Dreams
demands that attention be paid to the exhibition/intervention site as
well as the impact of the curators? subject-position in relation to their
proposal. Sites that might be used include establishment
museums, art galleries, community museums and centers, as well as
heritage walks, parks, cafes, transportation systems, advertisement
spaces, or other more ?vernacular? sites. Since much critical
museology is directed at metropolitan, national, and ?destination?
museums, a portion of this volume will address these types of sites.
Another portion will include innovative interventions in heritage sites
and vernacular landscapes. We plan to include perspectives from a variety
of scholars who may not have previously envisioned
themselves as curators, from disciplines such as history,
anthropology, sociology, geography, social work, law, art history,
philosophy, cultural studies, and others.

Questions that this volume seeks to engage include:

1. How can critiques of culture and representation be transformed into
exhibitions and public interventions, both within and outside of museums?

2. What kinds of social issues are exhibitions well positioned to
address? How do curators? social and cultural identities influence the
politics and possibilities of exhibitions.

3. What new curatorial strategies might better encourage and enable
audience engagement with specific sites and key social and political
issues? How can curators navigate social and political constraints within
and beyond their institutions?

4. How does the ?curatorial imagination? differ from academic
criticism, and how might having scholars experiment with curatorship
potentially transform criticism?

5. Can bridging the curator/critic divide help destabilize the
widespread institutional divide in museums between curators and
educators?

Interested contributors should send a proposal (250-500 words) as well as

elehrer@alcor.concordia.ca

Deadline for proposal submission: June 15, 2010 (early submissions are

Call for a new boundary-crossing network: Anthropology and Mobility

*** Apologies for cross-postings ***

/Call for a new boundary-crossing network/
*Anthropology and Mobility*
Convenor: Noel B. Salazar

Mobility, as a concept-metaphor, captures the common impression that
peoples life-worlds are in constant flux, with not only persons
(including anthropologists), but also cultures, objects, capital,
businesses, services, diseases, media, images, information, and ideas
circulating across (and even beyond) the planet. Among anthropologists,
it is fashionable these days to study tourism, migration, diaspora, and
exile; cosmopolitanism and transnationalism; global markets and
commodity chains; and global information and communication technologies,
media, and popular culture. The literature is replete with metaphorical
conceptualizations attempting to describe perceived altered spatial and
temporal movements: deterritorialization, reterritorialization, and
scapes; timespace compression, distantiation, or punctuation; the
network society and its space of flows; the death of distance and the
acceleration of modern life; and nomadology. The interest in mobility
goes hand in hand with theoretical approaches that reject a sedentarist
metaphysics in favour of a nomadic one and empirical studies on diverse
mobilities, questioning taken-for-granted correspondences between
peoples, places, and cultures.

While anthropologists traditionally tended to ignore or regard
border-crossing movements as deviations from normative place-bound
communities, cultural homogeneity, and social integration, the
discourses of globalization and cosmopolitanism of the 1990s shifted the
pendulum in the opposite direction, mobility often being promoted as
normality, and (too much) place attachment a digression or resistance
against globalizing forces. At the same time, critically engaged
anthropologists were among the first to point out that not all
mobilities are valued equally positively and that the very processes and
regimes that produce trans-border movements also result in geographical
and social immobility.

This new scholarly network aims to facilitate theoretical and
methodological exchanges on anthropology and mobility. What is the
analytical purchase of (im)mobility as a conceptual framework to study
and understand the current human condition? What are the most adequate
methods to research objects of study on the move? The network will not
only foster intellectually stimulating debates among anthropologists
working on mobility along various thematic and conceptual lines, but
will also create exciting opportunities for collaborative research and
publications.

We kindly invite everyone interested to attend our first network
meeting, which will be held during the 11th EASA Biennial Conference in
Maynooth, Ireland (24-27th August). The meeting will take place on
Wednesday, 25 August, from 20.00 until 21.30. The exact location will be

CALL FOR AUTHORS: Encyclopedia of Consumption and Waste: The Social Science of Garbage

Greetings,

We are inviting academic editorial contributors to a new reference work on
consumption and waste, or the social science of garbage.

Archaeologists and anthropologists have long studied artifacts of refuse
from the distant past as a portal into ancient civilizations, but examining
what we throw away today tells a story in real time and becomes an
important and useful tool for academic study. Trash is studied by
behavioral scientists who use data compiled from the exploration of
dumpsters to better understand our modern society and culture. Why does the
average American household send 470 pounds of uneaten food to the garbage
can on an annual basis? How do different societies around the world cope
with their garbage in these troubled environmental times? How does our
trash give insight into our attitudes about gender, class, religion, and
art? The Encyclopedia of Consumption and Waste explores the topic across
multiple disciplines within the social sciences and ranges further to
include business, consumerism, environmentalism, and marketing. Each
article ranges from 600 to 3,000 words. We are now making assignments due
October 1, 2010.

This comprehensive project will be published by SAGE Reference and will be
marketed to academic and public libraries as a print and digital product
available to students via the library?s electronic services. The General
Editor, who will be reviewing each submission to the project, is Dr.
William Rathje, emeritus University of Arizona, the top scholar in the
field.

If you are interested in contributing to this cutting-edge reference, it
is a unique opportunity to contribute to the contemporary literature,
redefining sociological issues in today?s terms. Moreover, it can be a
notable publication addition to your CV/resume and broaden your publishing
credits. SAGE Publications offers an honorarium ranging from SAGE book
credits for smaller articles up to a free set of the printed product or
access to the online product for contributions totaling 10,000 words or
more.

The list of available articles is already prepared, and as a next step we
will e-mail you the Article List (Excel file) from which you can select
topics that best fit your expertise and interests. Additionally, Style and
Submission Guidelines will be provided that detail article specifications.

If you would like to contribute to building a truly outstanding reference
with the Encyclopedia of Consumption and Waste: The Social Science of
Garbage, please contact me by the e-mail information below. Please provide
a brief summary of your academic/publishing credentials in related issues.

Thanks very much.

Childhoods Conference: Mapping the Landscapes of Childhood - May 2011

Call for Papers

Childhoods Conference: Mapping the Landscapes of Childhood

Venue: University of Lethbridge, Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

Date: Thursday, May 5 – Saturday, May 7, 2011

This multidisciplinary conference will engage scholars and practitioners from a wide variety of academic disciplines (including the sciences, arts, humanities, social sciences, policy studies, and education) in a consideration of the state of child studies, which has changed significantly in recent decades.   Disciplines long dedicated to the study of the child, and childhood, have been recently revitalized and are engaged with the central problematic of what the child and childhood represent, including how these categories relate to others such as infant and youth.  Figured in the plural, childhoods pose a significant crossroads for theoretical and empirical work on the nature of being human and development broadly construed.  Various disciplines consider childhood as an experience, as a biological fact, as a social category, as an artistic and literary construct, as a category for historical and demographic analysis, as a category of personhood, and as a locus for human rights and policy interventions.  Participating scholars will examine childhoods of the past, present, and future from around the world, and will present research results, policy approaches, and theoretical paradigms that are emergent in this re-engagement with the child and childhood.   Bringing together divergent networks of expertise, this conference offers the opportunity for new research collaborations and the scholarly dissemination of innovative research.

Conference Format: three days of multidisciplinary panels with scholarly presentations on conference themes; poster sessions; several keynote events; practitioner sessions; and a film night.

Conference Themes and Questions:  definitions and boundaries of childhood:  invented or discovered?; indigenous theories and experiences of childhood; the importance of gender; the impact of globalization; the impact of changing technologies on children and childhood, and on the study of children and childhood; concepts of adolescence; vulnerability and empowerment; and health, development, disability, and risk.  Proposals for papers on additional themes will also be considered.

Keynote Speakers:

  • Dr. Patrizia Albanese (Co-director of the Centre for Children, Youth and Families, Ryerson University)
  • Dr. Mona Gleason (Department of Educational Studies, University of British Columbia)
  • Dr. Allison James (Professor of Sociology and Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre of the Social Sciences, University of Sheffield)
  • Dr. Perry Nodelman (Professor Emeritus, Department of English, University of Winnipeg)
  • Dr. Mavis Reimer (Canada Research Chair in the Culture of Childhood and Director of the Centre for Research in Young People's Texts and Cultures, University of Winnipeg)
  • Dr. Richard Tremblay (Director, Research Unit on Children's Psychosocial Maladjustment, University of Montreal)

Submission Guidelines:  For presentations, and for posters, please submit a 300 to 500 word proposal/abstract by October 1, 2010 on the conference website: www.uleth.ca/conreg/childhoods/  Proposals for organized panels that are multidisciplinary are also welcome. Please note that presentations should be a maximum of 20 minutes in length. We would especially like to encourage graduate students to contribute posters on their current research and will offer a prize for best student poster.

For more information and to submit abstracts, please see the conference website

The Global Health Research Casebook

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

To consolidate lessons and experiences gained through applied global
health research partnerships, the Global Health Research Initiative
(GHRI) is inviting Case examples to contribute to a Global Health
Research Casebook. This Casebook will present concrete examples of how
Canadian-LMIC research partnerships have operationalized efforts to
reduce health inequities across a range of themes. This requires a
context-specific understanding of the social, economic and political
factors that determine people's health, not only through their
interactions with the health system and other sectors, but also
through their access to a range of resources and opportunities.

This Casebook aims to highlight practical, relevant and transferable
lessons by encouraging focused reflection among global health research
practitioners on emerging trends, insights and important advances in
addressing root causes of health disparities, the different effects of
policy interventions, and viable alternatives with the overall aim of
improving equity. Cases will provide concrete examples of the value of
global health research towards improving health and health systems to
share with research and policy communities and civil society.

Case Abstracts:
Case abstracts may be submitted in either French or English; they must
be no more than 500 words and be written in narrative style using
plain language.

Eligible Themes:
-strengthening health systems
-healthy policy and governance
-prevention and control of chronic disease
-prevention and control of emerging infectious disease
-interactions of health, environment and development
-emerging issues and trends in global health research

CASEBOOK TIMELINE

August 1st, 2010: Case abstracts due

Early September 2010: Selection of complete Cases

CIHR International Review 2011

As CIHR reaches its tenth anniversary, and in keeping with its
legislated responsibility, the CIHR Governing Council is coordinating
a second International Review of CIHR. The review will address the
following overarching question(s): 1) Has CIHR been effective in
fulfilling its mandate as outlined in the CIHR Act? 2 )How can CIHR
improve at achieving its mandate?

The review will be conducted by an International Review Panel
<http://www.cihr.ca/e/41798.html> chaired by Dr. Elias Zerhouni. In
addition, the International Review Panel will receive input from 13
Expert Review Teams <http://www.cihr.ca/e/41823.html> that have been
recruited to conduct reviews of the CIHR Institutes. The 2011
International Review will take place in Ottawa, starting with the
Institute reviews in February 2011, followed by the International
Review Panel meeting in March 2011.

Following the Panel's deliberations, Dr. Zerhouni will report the
findings and recommendations to the CIHR Governing Council. The final
report will be made public some time after its presentation to the
Governing Council in June 2011.

CIHR 10-year Anniversary

Today is a special day for CIHR - it's our 10th anniversary as an
organization.

In the 1990s, a small group of Canadian health research visionaries
proposed the creation of a radically new kind of health research
organization in Canada. It would respond to the challenges and
opportunities of a new century, one shaped by such monumental
scientific and technical shifts as the Human Genome Project and the
Internet. This movement produced CIHR, officially created by an Act of
Parliament on June 7, 2000.

Today, Canadians expect and depend on the world's most advanced health
research to respond to the complex range of health issues we face. By
promoting research excellence, CIHR has succeeded over the last 10
years in advancing health research and mobilizing the scientific
community to address the health priorities of Canadians.

Our 10th anniversary is a chance to reflect on and celebrate a decade
of health research successes and their positive impacts. More
importantly, it's an opportunity to renew our focus on the next 10
years.

Message from Alain Beaudet, MD, PhD,
CIHR President

Call for papers: Intersectoral action to address the social
determinants of health

Responsible editor: Louise Potvin, Montreal, Canada

International Journal of Public Health is interested in publishing
original research on intersectoral action to address the social
determinants of health. Because population health is mainly shaped by
factors that lie outside of the health sectors, the Ottawa Charter for
health promotion identifies intersectoral collaboration for the
planning and implementation of interventions as a strategy to address
the social determinants of health. Broadly defined as the coordination
of efforts stemming from a variety of actors in the public space
(various sectors from the government, associations, and private
sector), intersectoral action can take many forms. The apparent
success of this strategy that is often called upon to support public
health planning efforts does not correspond to an equally supportive
empirical literature. There exists very little empirical evidence on
the efficacy and the conditions of success of this strategy. We are
interested in receiving original empirical studies (quantitative,
qualitative or methodological) that report on:

-the quality of measurement instruments to appraise the functioning of
intersectoral

coalitions

-the conditions of success of intersectoral actions

-the efficacy of intersectoral actions to address the social
determinants of health

-methodological issues and practical solutions for the evaluation of
intersectoral action

Closing date for submission: 30 September 2010.

Manuscripts can be submitted online through the Journal's website

http://www.springer.com/public+health/journal/38www.birkhauser.ch/IJPH.

*Authors should mention in their comments for the Editor that the
submission refers to this call.

2010 National Conference on Health Statistics

The National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS)--an agency of the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)--is pleased to invite
you to attend its 2010 National Conference on Health Statistics. The
conference will be held Monday through Wednesday, August 16-18, 2010,
at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C.

Past NCHS conferences have offered workshop sessions describing the
agency's activities in data collection, analysis, and dissemination.
This year, we're excited to host a conference that will draw on
research topics affecting health-related activities today and will
serve as a forum for addressing future health topics. The new
conference format has been designed to attract the most knowledgeable
and influential professionals in the area of health statistics. Thomas
R. Frieden, M.D., M.P.H., Director of CDC, Robert Groves, Ph.D.,
Director of the U.S. Census Bureau, and Michael Wolfson, Ph.D.,
Assistant Chief Statistician (recently retired) of Statistics Canada,
will address the conference, along with many other esteemed speakers
<http://www.cdc.gov/nchs/events/nchs/speakers.htm> . The 3-day event
is shaping up to secure NCHS's position as a premiere statistical and
government agency.

This year also promises to be particularly exciting because NCHS will
be celebrating 50 years as a statistical agency. We're planning a
number of activities that highlight and celebrate our accomplishments
over the past 50 years.

The 2010 National Conference on Health Statistics is free and open to

Les résumes de cas peuvent être soumises en français ou en anglais ;

http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/f/41357.html

auxquels ils font face.
