New Journal: Canadian Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences - Call for Papers

Canadian Journal of Humanities and Social Sciences - Call for Papers

This letter is sent on behalf of Dr. Jeremy Jackson, Editor of CJHSS.

The purpose of this letter is to introduce you to a new Canadian academic
journal called the Canadian Journal of the Humanities and Social Sciences
(CJHSS).

The CJHSS represents an entirely new form of academic publication and
discourse. We are the first journal to promote and encourage articles
that spawn
open, ongoing debate amongst academics across a wide range of intellectual
disciplines. We seek to publish articles that engage intellectuals in the
humanities and social sciences in debate amongst each other on issues of
importance across disciplines. Rather than encouraging highly
discipline-specific, microanalyses, the CJHSS wishes to advocate
multidisciplinary discourse.

The CJHSS is also the first academic journal to allow online, unrestricted
academic publication and review of articles. The mandate of the CJHSS is to
remove as much editorial censorship as possible. To this end, the
journal offers
authors the opportunity to publish articles online with only minimal editorial
interference. In combination with our online article review process, this
approach creates an environment for free, open academic debate without the
ordinary academically restrictive editorial and economic considerations of
traditional hard-copy journals.

The CJHSS is an online journal located at www.cjhss.org<http://www.cjhss.org/.

Please feel free to peruse the journal at your leisure. We aim to publish our
first edition in mid to late summer of this year. At the present time we are
accepting articles for publication. We would very much appreciate a submission
from you and/or any member of your department. If you could post the attached
call for papers and/or email it to members of your department, we
would be most
grateful.

Thank you for your consideration of our request. We hope that you and the
CJHSS can work together to create an entirely new and productive form of
academic discourse.

Sincerely,

Dr Jeremy Jackson

PANEL ? *Asian border-crossing mobilities: On the road to (self)development*

Panel abstract

Various forms of geographical mobility have long been linked to
self-improvement. Today,
boundary-crossing travels in particular are widely accepted as a
desirable (not to say
normative) path towards success, be it educational or scientific
(student, faculty or
staff exchange), occupational and financial (work experience abroad),
religious
(pilgrimage), or higher social status (tourism or lifestyle
migration). Mobility is also
often framed as serving the development of the places one travels to,
or their people.
Volunteers, missionaries, investors, doctors, teachers, engineers and
?responsible
tourists? all claim to be contributing to this noble goal. While
cross-border mobilities
in Asia have been associated with self-betterment since colonial
times, mobility as the
betterment of others, traditionally a preserve of the First and the
now-defunct Second
World, is becoming an increasingly common discourse, accompanying an
expanding practice
and span of mobilities. The ranks of Asian investors, missionaries,
volunteers and
eco-minded tourists abroad are growing rapidly and adding to the ranks
of workers and
students. Sometimes, a combination of entrepreneurial zeal and
religious devotion
coalesces into a discourse of mission that appears to parallel ?the
white man?s burden?
from a century ago. This panel explores how voluntary mobility has
become linked with
various forms of self-improvement and the development of others ?
economic, social,
cultural, environmental or soteriological ? across Asian societies.
Where do the
currently dominant imaginaries of success-through-mobility and
help-through-migration
come from and which mechanisms and institutional regimes ensure their
circulation? How
are other- and self-improvement linked, and in which situations do
both come into
conflict?

Submission of abstracts:

Apart from contact details, paper proposers are asked to supply a
paper title and a
250-word abstract.

_Deadline_ for receipt of all proposals is 1 August 2010

Call for Papers

Call for Papers for an Edited Collection: Embodied Practice, the
Media, and Identity in Canadian Contexts
In recent years, the increasing research focus upon various embodied
ways of knowing and experiencing the world has been accompanied by
shifting theoretical and methodological approaches to the
interpretation and representation of both individual and collective
human experiences in interdisciplinary contexts. "Embodied"
practices include, for example, the recent "affective turn"(Clough and
Halley 2007) within academia, the rise and popularization of various
sensorial and experiential methods and modes of representation, and
"educultural" approaches (Lea and Sims 2008). Such approaches seek to
understand and explore the intersections among feelings, sensations,
emotions, and affect and practice. In many ways, these models
challenge scholars to critically re-examine pervasive mind/body
dualisms as well as longstanding hegemonic discourses in the
interpretation of social experiences. Despite the growing body of
literature on affect, emotion, and embodiment, however, there exists a
paucity of ethnographic or other qualitative analyses of such domains
of experience within Canadian contexts. As such, we are seeking
original, previously unpublished papers that utilize qualitative
approaches to explore collective affective states within the context
of Canadian society. In particular, we are interested in papers that
explore the relationship between embodied practice, media and the
production of identities within Canadian contexts. Possible topics
might include: examinations of emerging methods and methodologies; the
role of the mass media, spectacles, or other performative genres in
the development of affective states; the relationship between embodied
practices, media, and the construction of identities of nationalism,
gender, sexuality, race, or ethnicity, all within a Canadian context.
Final chapters should be in English and between 6000-8000 pages long.
Accompanying photographic materials are encouraged, but authors will
be responsible for obtaining publication rights.
Deadline:
Please submit a 500 word abstract and an abridged C.V. to Dr. Lynda
Mannik (lmannik@yorku.ca) and Dr. Karen McGarry (mcgarry@yorku.ca) by
September 20, 2010. We will review all submissions and acceptances
will be sent to authors by October 30, 2010. Final drafts of accepted
papers will be due on April 1, 2011.
About the editors:
Dr. Lynda Mannik is an anthropologist currently working in the Social
Anthropology Department at York University. She is the author of
Canadian Indian Cowboys in Australia: Representation, Rodeo and the
RCMP at the Royal Easter Show, 1939 (University of Calgary Press,
2006) and, a forthcoming book with UBC Press titled, "Photography,
Memory and Refugee Identity: the Voyage of the S.S. Walnut, 1948"
(2011). This fall she is embarking on a new research project in
conjunction with Memorial University concerning media portrayals of
Sikh refugees that arrived on Canadian shores in the late 1980s with a
focus on the active, relational nature of photography.
Dr. Karen McGarry is a cultural anthropologist at Trent University
whose research interests include sport, spectacle, and the production
of Canadian identities within mediated contexts. Her forthcoming book
titled, "Performing Nationalisms: Spectacle and Identity in Elite
Canadian Figure Skating," to be published by McGill-Queen's University
Press, is based upon ethnographic research with Olympic figure
skaters, and it explores the production of Canadian national
identities via the global circulation and international consumption of
skating imagery. Her work has also been published in a variety of
edited volumes and peer-reviewed journals, including Reviews in
Anthropology, Genders, The American Review of Canadian Studies, and
The Sport Journal.

PHIR Casebook Call for Case Abstracts

CIHR-IPPH and CIHI-CPHI Call for Case Abstracts for a Population
Health Intervention Research Casebook

For additional information please visit
http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/41599.html.

Summary

This call is intended to solicit case abstracts of population health
intervention research cases. Population health intervention research
involves the use of scientific methods to produce knowledge about
policy and program interventions that operate within or outside of the
health sector1 <http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/41599.html#fn1> and have
the potential to impact health at the population level (PHIRIC
<http://www.cihr-irsc.gc.ca/e/38731.html> ). The Canadian Institutes
of Health Research (CIHR) - Institute of Population and Public Health
(IPPH) and Canadian Population Health Initiative (CPHI) of the
Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI) intend to use
selected cases to showcase population health intervention research and
to publish and distribute a Population Health Intervention Research
Casebook (or possibly two casebooks with 3-4 cases each). The focus of
the casebook will be on population health intervention research that
features novel theoretical and methodological approaches, demonstrates
impact and/or lessons learned, identifies areas for further research,
and promotes uptake by program planners and policy decision-makers
with the purpose of increasing awareness and understanding of the
value of population health intervention research.

The casebook objectives are to:

1. increase awareness and understanding of the value of population
health intervention research;
2. highlight different theoretical and methodological approaches to
population health intervention research
3. illustrate lessons learned from both successful, and less
successful initiatives;
4. demonstrate the impact that population health intervention research
can have in informing policy, program and practice changes to improve
health and health equity and illustrate how the research can have an
impact (what steps are needed to ensure success and what strategies
are useful to confront challenges?);
5. identify potential propositions for future testing in population
health intervention research; and,
6. facilitate knowledge translation including uptake and adoption of
population health intervention research by a primary audience of
program planners and policy decision makers as well as other groups.

Post-Doctoral Fellowship in Public Health Systems Renewal with the
Core Public Health Functions Research Initiative (CPHFRI)

Applications are invited for a postdoctoral fellowship in the Faculty
of Human and Social Development or in the School of Nursing at the
University of Victoria, for up to two years, to engage in research
related to public health systems renewal. You will join a large
interdisciplinary research team studying the implementation and impact
of the BC Core Public Health Functions Framework. The framework
comprises 20 core public health programs in the broad areas of health
improvement; disease, injury, and disability prevention; environmental
health; and health emergency management. Core programs incorporate the
public health strategies of health promotion, prevention, health
protection, and surveillance. A population and an inequities lens
ensure that vulnerable populations are a major focus of core public
health services. We have conceptualized the framework as a policy
level population health intervention. Because our research program is
built around this broad and flexible framework, there are many
opportunities to take up your own research interest within the field
of public health services. For more information about the framework
see http://www.phabc.org/modules.php?name=Contentcore . More
information about the team and program of research can be found at:
http://web.uvic.ca/~cphfri/about/index.htm

The post-doctoral fellow will have opportunities to develop knowledge
and skills in all aspects of policy-relevant public health systems
research. There will also be opportunities to work collaboratively
with senior public health policy makers related to various aspects of
the core public health functions implementation. The second year of
funding will be contingent upon achieving Year 1 goals. The fellowship
is open to candidates who hold a PhD in a health- related field or
discipline. Candidates must demonstrate prior experience with public
and population health or health services and policy research.

Selection will be based on: 1) relevance of candidate`s educational
and professional background, research interests, and potential to
contribute to public and population health or public health systems
research; 2) degree completion by the start date; 3) evidence of a
developing research and publication record. The fellowship begins July
1, 2009 (negotiable). The annual salary stipend is $40,000 plus $2,500
per year for research expenses. To apply, please submit a CV, three
letters of reference (including a letter from PhD supervisor), and a
cover letter describing your experience/interest in public and
population health or public health services research, your goals for
the fellowship, and the expected outcomes of completing this
post-doctoral fellowship. Complete application materials are due June
1, 2010. They should be sent electronically or by courier to:

Call for Nominations - Postdoctoral Fellow

Postdoctoral Fellowship in the context of the VoisiNuage Study

(Living conditions in neighbourhoods and older adults' health )

The VoisiNuAge research team is offering a postdoctoral fellowship in
the context of investigations of how characteristics of neighbourhoods
relate to social participation, physical activity, and healthy eating
among older adults. The VoisiNuAge Study is a result of the merging
of two major research initiatives: the NuAge cohort study (n=1793
older adults followed over a 5-year period), and the Geographic
Information System Mégaphone, which provides a variety of data on the
natural and built environment, and on the social, socio-economic and
other dimensions of Montréal neighbourhoods. The Fellow will be
invited to develop one or more research projects using the VoisiNuAge
data, in connection with his or her own interests, and in
collaboration with the research team. The VoisiNuAge project is
supervised by Lucie Richard and Lise Gauvin at the Université de
Montréal.

Desired profile:

* Graduate student (or on the way to becoming one between now
and summer 2010) in public health, epidemiology, geography or another
pertinent discipline

* Demonstrated abilities in quantitative methods, particularly
in multivariate analyses such as regression and factorial analysis

* Mastery of SPSS or SAS software; knowledge of more specialized
statistical tools (SPAD, LISREL, EQS; HLM) will be an asset

* Interest in issues related to the impact of neighbourhood
characteristics and/or older adults health.

Requirements:

* Coordinating one or more analysis projects using VoisiNuAge
data, from conception through to publication

* Participating in VoisiNuage Team activities, particularly in
the weekly research meetings and in the execution of other analysis
projects carried out by the team

Le but

interventionnelle en santé des populations;
des populations;
moins fructueuses;
les difficultés?);
ultérieure en recherche interventionnelle en santé des populations;

22 - 23 novembre 2010 - Hôtel Four Seasons (Toronto, ON)
