Senior Policy Advisor – Mental Wellness
(Full-Time Permanent)

Summary:

Under the general direction and supervision of the Director of the
Department of Health and Social Development, the Senior Policy Advisor
– Mental Wellness will work towards promoting and improving within the
area of mental wellness for Inuit in Canada. The Senior Policy
Advisor- Mental Wellness will liaise with Inuit organizations as well
as assist in the co-ordination, design, development, implementation,
monitoring and updating of information with respect to the mental
wellness file.

Duties and responsibilities:
Planning

Identify research needs related to mental wellness and participate in
relevant research projects;
Design proposals, inclusive of cover letter, work plan and budget to funders;
Draft, edit and produce reports, studies, position papers, policy
statements and other documents as required in relation to mental
wellness;
Participate in the development of departmental and organizational
strategic, operational and project plans; and
Attend relevant conferences and participate in relevant working groups
as time and resources permit.
Policy

Conduct analyses and formulate recommendations/positions on Mental
Wellness as it relates to policy development;
Collaborate with colleagues within ITK, Regional Inuit Organizations,
and other regional bodies working in the area of Mental Wellness.
Monitor developing trends, policies, programs and issues with actual
or potential impact on issues and interests related to Mental Wellness
and;
Perform external consultations with Inuit organizations and internal
consultations as required.

Communication

Establish and maintain linkages with youth, elders, communities,
regions, etc.;
Attend meetings and conduct regular teleconferences in order to
maintain frequent communications with key stakeholders about Mental
Wellness and other assigned projects;
Facilitate and participate in communications, relevant meetings,
workshops and conferences;
Develop communication strategies on key issues relevant to Mental
Wellness and other assigned projects; and
Report as required to the Director.

Administration

Disseminate relevant information;
Provide support for regions/communities with respect to Mental Wellness;
Coordinate the management of projects from start to finish, including
budget monitoring, consultation activities, working group/committee
work, workshop and teleconference organization and logistics,
communications, and various reporting requirements;
Establish and maintain policy, research records and systems as required; and
Make project and program recommendations to the Director.

Representation

Represent ITK in meetings and conferences or on committees and working
groups as assigned by the Director. This could include task forces or
working groups struck from time to time with
Government/Territorial/Provincial departments and Inuit organizations.
Qualifications

Education/Experience:
Any combination of education and experience, providing the required
skill and knowledge for successful performance is present.
Qualifications include:

Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree in a relevant discipline: social
sciences, political science, health or relevant field, and a minimum
of 2 years of related work
Or
Completion of Grade 12 or equivalent and a minimum of 3-5 years of
relevant work experience in a similar role; and
General research and policy development experience.
Essential Skills & Abilities:

Excellent oral and written communication skills;
Effective writing, speaking, facilitation, coordination,
prioritization and time management skills are required;
Computer skills including word processing, spreadsheets and database
development, Microsoft Office (Word, Excel and Access), internet,
e-mail, and PowerPoint presentations; and
Inuit Language skills are a definite asset.
Team player, self-motivated and directed;
Good organizational and time management skills;
Ability to work co-operatively with a variety of individuals and groups;
Sound problem solving and analytical skills;
Ability to understand and interpret policy; and
Sensitive to local, political and cultural issues; and
Spoken and written Inuktitut/Innuinaqtun language is desirable;

Knowledge:

Familiarity with the principles and practices of business
administration, including program budgeting
Understanding of Northern communities, traditional values and the
general issues facing Inuit that generally comes from living and
working in a Northern community or a rural/developing community;
Working knowledge of Inuit Land Claim Agreements and related
legislation and policy frameworks; and
Working knowledge and understanding of Government programs and policy:
policy review and analysis; program development and evaluation; and
consultation protocol.
Inter-relationships:

Must be able to work both independently and co-operatively with a
variety of individuals and groups, including government and land claim
organizations;
Must be able to foster strong working relationships with relevant
Federal and Provincial/Territorial Government departments and Regional
Inuit Organizations.
Working Conditions:

Office environment: frequent use of computer, telephone and fax machine
Occasional travel and regular meetings;
Operational direction is provided by the Director;
Consequence of error impact on operational success;
Politically sensitive issues may become stressful; and
Frequent deadlines, which intensifies when workload is large.

"Call for Entries: 2016 David Plath Media Award for best
film/video/multimedia work on East Asian Anthropology"
Announcement via EASIANTH:

The Society for East Asian Anthropology invites submissions for the
David Plath Media Award. Film, video, and multimedia submissions may
address any aspect of East Asian anthropology and/or East Asian
anthropology's contribution to the broader field. The 2016 prize will
be awarded for material produced in 2014 or 2015.

The prize of $300 is named for David Plath, renowned Japan-scholar and
producer of award-winning documentary films. Evaluators of the work
will seek to determine the scholarly significance of submissions which
contribute to the anthropology of East Asia.Nominations for the prize
may be made by producers/authors, distributors, or interested third
parties. The award will be announced at the SEAA Business Meeting
during the 2016 AAA Annual Meeting (Minneapolis, MN).

Summer Institute: "Arts of Survival: Recasting Lives in African Cities"*

The Indiana University (Bloomington) Institute for Advanced Study will host
the 2016 NEH Summer Institute, "Arts of Survival: Recasting Lives in
African Cities" for college and university teachers.* This three-week
institute, held in Bloomington and New Orleans, explores contemporary urban
culture and arts in African and African diaspora cities--Accra, Lagos,
Nairobi, New Orleans and Port-au-Prince. These cities share African roots
but are distinctive because of the unique paths that subsequently shaped
them: landscapes and histories; multiple languages; waves of immigrants who
brought and continue to bring their labor, culture and creativity; and the
sometimes tragic events, both "natural" (hurricanes and earthquakes) and
man-made (legacies of colonialism and slavery, political violence, and
negligence), that these cities have undergone.

Our goal is to examine how art engages the political and social hierarchies
embedded in these cities and often recasts marginal or precarious lives
into lives that exceed their constraining structures. Through in-depth case
studies of each of these cities and their arts and an immersive experience
in New Orleans, our goal is to help participants grasp, both intellectually
and viscerally, the intricate workings of urban spaces in Africa and its
Atlantic diaspora. By examining music, literature, visual arts, festivals,
and films, participants will learn, through the unique lens of individual
artists, how urban identities are recast in each city, particularly in the
face of historical and contemporary catastrophe. *Any views, findings,
conclusions, or recommendations expressed in this program do not
necessarily represent those of the National Endowment for the Humanities.*

The UN Women China Internship Programme offers a small group of
outstanding graduate-level students the opportunity to acquire direct
exposure to UN Women's work. It is designed to complement gender and
development studies with practical experience in various aspects of
multilateral technical cooperation. The internship would also
complement other studies such as international relations,
communications or law.

Internship assignments vary greatly in terms of content, however
interns are normally involved in some aspect of the design,
implementation and evaluation of UN Women-supported programmes and
projects. Every attempt is made to match the interests of the intern
with the needs of the organisation.

Internship assignments vary in length according to the availability
and academic requirements of the intern, as well as the needs of UN

Canada Council Killam Prizes

The Canada Council Killam Prizes were inaugurated in 1981 with a
donation by Mrs. Dorothy J. Killam in memory of her husband, Izaak
Walton Killam. The Prizes were created to honour eminent Canadian
scholars and scientists actively engaged in research, whether in
industry, government agencies or universities.
The Killam Program at the Canada Council also includes the Killam
Research Fellowships, which support scholars engaged in research
projects of outstanding merit in the humanities, social sciences,
natural sciences, health sciences, engineering and interdisciplinary
studies within these fields.

2016 Clifford Geertz Prize competition

The Society for the Anthropology of Religion

a section of the American Anthropological Association

announces the 2016 juried competition for the

CLIFFORD GEERTZ PRIZE
IN THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF RELIGION

The Geertz Prize seeks to encourage excellence in the anthropology of
religion by recognizing an outstanding recent book in the field. The
prize is named in honor of the late Professor Clifford Geertz, in
recognition of his many distinguished contributions to the
anthropological study of religion. In awarding the Prize, the Society
hopes to foster innovative scholarship, the integration of theory with
ethnography, and the connection of the anthropology of religion to the
larger world.

Eligibility

Any single-authored or co-authored book focusing on the anthropology
of religion, broadly defined, is eligible for the Prize. Edited
volumes, textbooks, and reference works are not eligible, nor are
works in which religion is a secondary subject. The book's author need
not be an anthropologist by profession, but the work should draw on
and respond to research and theory within the anthropology of
religion. Books must have a publication date of 2014 or later. Books
that have already been reviewed for the Prize will not be reconsidered.

The prize will be awarded at the American Anthropological Association
Annual Meeting in November, 2016.

Submission guidelines

To receive additional information on how to submit a book for
consideration, please send a flyer or an abstract about the book to
jhill@siu.edu. Deadline for submission of books is March 31, 2016

Fellowship in Ethnographic Writing, 2016-7

Fellowship in Ethnographic Writing, 2016-7

The Centre for Ethnography (CE) at the University of Toronto at
Scarborough (UTSC) is accepting applications for their annual Fellowship
in Ethnographic Writing. Writing is a key component of the work of an
anthropologist, but it takes time and benefits from some distance from the
fieldwork itself, and from other obligations. In recognition of this fact
the CE introduced a Fellowship in Ethnographic Writing in 2010. We are now
seeking applications for either Fall or Winter Term of 2016-7, to be held
at UTSC.

The recipient of this award is expected to devote their time fully to
writing and may not teach or hold any other form of employment during the
tenure of the award. They are expected to attend all talks and colloquia
at the CE, to work several days a week on campus at UTSC, and to
contribute a presentation of their work in progress to the colloquia. In
addition, the Fellow will be available to coach students completing an
undergraduate writing assignment, in tandem with a professor teaching a
core anthropology course. This work will be limited to 5 hours in total.

Applicants should supply a statement of no more than 5 double-spaced pages
describing their writing project, indicating the stage that it is at, and
precisely what they wish to accomplish during the duration of the
Fellowship. Explicit attention to questions of genre, narrative, and
audience are welcome but not essential. Successful applicants will either
be at the post-doctoral stage (engaged in transforming a thesis into a
book or articles) or in the final stages of completing the doctoral
thesis. All applicants must have completed their doctoral fieldwork and
have already submitted significant portions of their dissertation to their
committee. The current stipend is set at $10,000 for a period of ten
weeks.

The closing date for this competition is March 15, 2016. Please send all
applications, as well as the names of two referees, electronically to the
Centre for Ethnography <centreforethnography@utsc.utoronto.ca>.

Indigitization Grant

Indigitization Grant

Deadline: February 26

Indigitization is a collaborative initiative between Indigenous
communities and organizations, the Irving K. Barber Learning Centre,
the Museum of Anthropology, and the School for Library, Archival and
Information Studies to facilitate capacity building in Indigenous
information management. This project is committed to clarifying
processes and identifying issues in the conservation, digitization,
and management of Indigenous community knowledge. It does so by
providing information resources through the Indigitization toolkit and
by enabling community-led audio cassette digitization projects through
grant funding and training. Indigitization seeks to grow and work with
a network of practitioners to develop effective practices for the
management of digital heritage that support the goals of individual
communities.
