***Même si la CASCA reste très critique face l'exploitation toujours
croissante des chargés de cours et professeurs à court terme, la liste
de diffusion continue d'annoncer les postes à temps partiel.
***Although CASCA remains profoundly critical of the increasing trend
in the exploitation of part-time, sessional and contract faculty, the
list-serve includes advertisements for part-time teaching opportunities.

African Studies Film Screenings at Carleton U, Ottawa - MAY 28-30, 2015
AFRICA DAY SCREENINGS AT CARLETON UNIVERSITY,
Ottawa ON
MAY 28-30, 2015
The African Group of Diplomats in Canada, the Institute of African
Studies and the Film Studies Program of Carleton University, in
collaboration with the Canadian Film Institute, are pleased to invite
you to the screening of three films in celebration of Africa Day.
All screenings will take place at:
Carleton University - River Building, Room 2200
(intersection of Campus Ave. and University Drive; see
carleton.ca/campus/map)
Carleton University, Ottawa, ON
* On Thursday, May 28th, at 7pm with support from the Embassy of
Algeria we are screening Hors la loi /Outside the Law by Rachid
Bouchareb (Algeria)
Hors la loi /Outside the Law (dir. Rachid Bouchareb, 2010, French
and Arabic with English
subtitles, 137 min.)
The story takes place between 1945 and 1962, and focuses on the lives
of three Algerian brothers in France, set against the backdrop of the
Algerian independence movement and the Algerian War. It provides an
historically unorthodox portrayal of the 1945 Sétif massacre and
sparked a political controversy in France. Reviews of the film
compared it to Westerns and gangster films, and critics observed how
the independence activists were likened to the French Resistance
during World War II. Outside the Law represented Algeria at the 83rd
Academy Awards, where it was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film.
"A tense, energetic historical drama on a grand scale – somewhere
between Bertolucci and Michael Mann" (Jonathan Romney, The
Independent on Sunday).
* On Friday, May 29th at 7pm with support from the Embassy of Egypt
we are screening The Emigrant by Youssef Chahine (Egypt), the most
celebrated Egyptian film director.
The Emigrant (dir. Youssef Chahine, 1994, Arabic with English
subtitles, 155 min.).
In this retelling of Joseph's life with an Egyptian twist, the
descendant of Abraham is known as Ram, a man leading a nomadic life
and dreaming of studying in Egypt. Ram (Khaled El Nabaoui) and his
brothers travel across the Sinai Desert, after which his brothers
decide to sell him to a man who takes him to Thebes, Egypt. There, he
meets military leader Amihar (Mahmoud Hemida) and his wife (Yousra),
who lusts after Ram. He must deal with her advances and with Amihar's
plans to obtain power.
* On Saturday, May 30th at 7pm, with support from the Embassy of
Haiti we are screening Ayiti Toma by Joseph Hillel (Canada/Haiti).
Ayity Toma: The Land of the Living (dir. Joseph Hillel, Canada/Haiti,
French with English subtitles, 83 min).
Beyond the country that overcame slavery to become the first Black
Republic, beyond the country that has survived numerous natural
disasters and even humanitarian aid, lies Ayiti Toma, the 'country
that is ours'. The documentary that bears this name aspires to
present this lesser known, more inclusive Ayiti as it is retold and
illuminated by the Ayitians themselves, be they intellectuals,
politicians, practitioners of voodoo or young survivors from a
hard-hit borough of Port-au-Prince. With the additional input of
anthropologists, historians and aid workers (including Sean Penn),
this documentary illustrates that this extraordinary culture must be
taken into account if Ayiti Toma, the land of the living is to come
into being.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission of Canada (TRC) is holding its
Closing Event in Ottawa.
May 31-June 3, 2015.
Delta Hotel, Ottawa
For more than 120 years, tens of thousands of Aboriginal children were
sent to Indian Residential Schools funded by the federal government
and run by the churches. They were taken from their families and
communities in order to be stripped of language, cultural identity and
traditions. Canada's attempt to wipe out Aboriginal cultures failed.
But it left an urgent need for reconciliation between Aboriginal and
non-Aboriginal peoples.
Be a part of the National Journey for Healing and Reconciliation!
• Survivor Sharing Circles
• Walk for Reconciliation
• Actions of Reconciliation
• Education Day
• Traditional Ceremonies
• Cultural Performances
• Films, Archival Photos and more
Come and share your truth about the schools and their legacy. Witness
and celebrate the resilience of Aboriginal cultures!
All gatherings are held at the Delta Ottawa, unless otherwise
indicated. Open to the public and admission is free.
Highlights
Sacred Fire and Sunrise Ceremonies – May 31 to June 3, 2015 on
Victoria Island (no cameras please).
Statement Gathering – June 1-2, 2015 at the Delta Ottawa
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission wants to hear from everyone
who has been affected by the Indian Residential Schools. That includes
Survivors of the schools, their families, community members – anyone
whose life has been affected by the schools or their legacy.
Honourary Witness Ceremony – June 1-2 at the Delta Ottawa
Honourary Witnesses are public figures who take on a special
responsibility for sharing the TRC's message of truth-telling and
reconciliation. In fact, we are all invited to be witnesses – to
listen carefully to the truths that are shared and to share them with
those that we know when we return to our own homes and communities.
New Honourary Witnesses will be inducted during the Ottawa Closing
Event.
TRC Final Report – June 2, 2015 at the Delta Ottawa
TRC Commissioners will release their findings on Indian Residential
Schools. Join in person at Delta Ottawa, or tune in via webcast for
this historic event.
Walk for Reconciliation – May 31, 2015 from École secondaire de l'Île
in Gatineau to Marion Dewar Plaza (Ottawa City Hall)

Schools. Join in person at Delta Ottawa, or tune in via webcast for
this historic event.

in Gatineau to Marion Dewar Plaza (Ottawa City Hall)

The Canadian Federation of University Women - La F=?utf-8?Q?=C3=A9d=C3=A9ration_Canadienne_des_Femmes_Dipl=C3=B4m=C3=A9es_des_Universit=C3=A9s?= (CFUW-FCFDU)- Research/writing opportunity
The Canadian Federation of University Women - La Fédération Canadienne des
Femmes Diplômées des Universités (CFUW-FCFDU)- Research/writing opportunity
Expression of Interest deadline: June 1, 2015
Attention: Scholars in Social History and/or Women's Studies
Are you a graduate or post-graduate student looking for a compelling
research topic?
Or perhaps you are an established academic with an interest in tracking the
origins and evolution of one of Canada's foremost national women's
organizations?
Or you may be newly retired and looking for the kind of satisfying project
that you now have the time to pursue?
The Canadian Federation of University Women - La Fédération Canadienne des
Femmes Diplômées des Universités CFUW-FCFDU, started in 1919 as part of an
international women's peace initiative and then quickly became an
independent, self-funded Canada-wide advocate for promoting higher
education for women, (including sponsoring the research of Dr. Marie Curie)
during the first half of the 20th century.
By the 1960's, with over 100 clubs from all parts of the country,
CFUW-FCFDU became an active participant in advising and recommending
critical social and political changes at both the provincial and national
levels.
We are very proud that while little recognized in conventional histories,
CFUW-FCFDU advocacy significantly improved, and continues to improve, the
fundamental rights, freedoms and opportunities of girls and women both at
home and abroad.
Our Offer
As part of our 100th year celebrations, CFUW-FCFDU is looking for a
qualified researcher/writer who will agree to write our organization's
history in the context of Canadian social history in exchange for full
independent access to our archival materials.
Original materials are housed at both our national office and at the
National Archives, both located in Ottawa. Among the archival materials
are: documents in the form of private letters and official correspondence,
speeches, conference agendas, minutes, resolutions, numerous official
briefs and reports as well as many newspaper clippings, extensive
photographic material and privately prepared national, provincial and club
histories including the recently completed biographies of past presidents
and other influential women in our organization.
Primary material is mostly in English, but some is in French with the ideal
candidate able to read both languages.
We are not able to provide funding specifically for this project- but we
will cooperate fully with providing additional information or assistance
for any grant or financing applications that the chosen candidate wishes to
apply for. While still to be determined, the final product would likely be
in an e-book form and made available to our membership and to the general
public. We are open to proposals that would enable a hard-copy publication.
How you can apply:
You can apply by sending us an email outlining your initial "Expression of
Interest" on or before June 1, 2015 to the attention of Brenda Shanahan,
History Committee, at cfuwhistory@fcfdu.org with the following information:
1. Name and full contact information including email and preferred
telephone number
2. Why you are interested in writing our history (500 words or less)
including any ideas you have for funding
3. Your C.V. including any academic or professional projects currently in
progress
Additional information:
CFUW is a non-partisan, voluntary, self-funded group with over 100 Clubs,
and close to 9000 members, located in every province across Canada.
CFUW works to improve the status of women and girls, and to promote human
rights, public education, social justice, and peace. It holds special
consultative status with the United Nations (ECOSOC) and belongs to the
Education Committee of the Canadian Commission for UNESCO.
CFUW is the largest affiliate of the International Federation of University
Women (IFUW), which represents women worldwide.

1.
Streetlife Symposium, 15 Sept 2015, University of Kent
The street has long been a key laboratory for studies of social life,
from the roots of urban sociology in the pioneering ethnographies of
the Chicago School through to the diverse studies considering the
performative, affective and non-representational nature of social
practice through in situ examination of street etiquette and
encounter. For all this, the street remains only loosely defined, and
sometimes disappears from view in studies in which social action is
privileged over material context.
This one-day symposium accordingly sets out to explore the perennial
appeal of the streets as a site of sociological and geographical
inquiry. It will focus on whether it is still right to privilege the
street in super-diverse and increasingly virtual societies, and will
question the methods by which we seek to apprehend the rhythms and
rituals of streetlife.
Keynote speakers include Sophie Watson, Suzanne Hall and Monica Degan,
with panel contributions and responses from Alasdair Jones, Steve
Millington, Oli mould, Nick Dines, Phil Mizen, Helen Wilson, Myria
Georgiou, Sabina Andron, Giulia Carabelli, Phil Hubbard, Dawn Lyon and
Peter Hatton.
This event, sponsored by The Sociological Review, will be held at the
Medway campus of the University of Kent, 15 Sept 2015, 1000-1800
The event is free, but registration is required as places are limited.

Grant Opportunity: Learning from Peace in Sub-Saharan Africa
United States Institute of Peace (USIP) Grant Opportunity: Learning
from Peace in Sub-Saharan Africa
Deadline Date: May 11, 2015
Background
Practitioners and policymakers in the peacebuilding field too often
focus on studying the causes and consequences of conflict at the
expense of examining the causes of peace. To help societies work to
become more peaceful, it is necessary to have a better understanding
of why some areas are able to resist falling into conflict, while
others are not. For example, there are instances throughout Africa of
where cross-country (e.g. Niger's relative stability vs Mali's recent
conflict) or internal comparison (e.g. in South Sudan, Eastern
Equatoria state has long enjoyed higher levels of peace than the rest
of the country) can provide important insight for conflict prevention
policy. What are the governing practices, social institutions, norms,
values or context that bolster stability throughout sub-Saharan
Africa? What actions and practices bolster communities to resist
violent extremism, inter-ethnic violence, violent crime, and other
forms of violence?
USIP's Africa team is seeking concept notes that examine a specific
example of learning from peace, drawing examples from sub-Saharan
Africa.
Call for Concept Notes
The USIP call for concept notes on "Learning from Peace in sub-Saharan
Africa" falls under the grantmaking program of USIP's Middle East and
Africa Center (MEA). It is designed to support peacebuilding programs
and research in Africa. Priority will be given to local organizations,
though U.S. and international organizations and universities with a

from Peace in Sub-Saharan Africa
Priority will be given to local organizations,
though U.S. and international organizations and universities with a
strong history of work in the region may also apply. USIP supports
both research projects and initiatives that focus on conflict
resolution, conflict prevention, community resilience, peacebuilding
and countering violent extremism.
