Festival of Visual Anthropology and Video Art

INTIMATE LENS

http://www.intimatelensfestival.com/ [6]

Call for movies – Second edition
Intimate Lens – Festival of Visual Anthropology and Video Art
Organized by B.R.I.O. Brillanti realtà in osservazione e BAGARIA,
Tradizioni a Confronto, in collaboration with Comune di Caserta,
Provincia di Caserta, Regione Campania

Time Frame: From December 6 to 9, 2012

LOCATIONS: Complesso Sant’Agostino, Reggia di Caserta, OfCA,
Labyrintho - Caserta. Locations, dates and final hours may vary after
the call for movies. Every change will be communicated immediately to
the authors.
Intimate Lens: Festival of Visual Ethnography is intended to promote
documentary cinema with particular attention to anthropological topics
and methodologies. The international character of the festival is both
desirable and unavoidable because of the specific character of the
discipline and of the medium of film itself. Even in this second
edition we have chosen not to focus on specialist themes but instead
to offer an array of work representing different filmic idioms and
geographical areas of interest. The festival will have two main
sections, both with no restriction on topics: the first one with
requested movies and the second one will be a contest. The same
structure is proposed also for the video art festival. The aim of this
enrichment is to find a common language, or at least common
intentions, about the anthropological object and the even different
perspectives that may be privileged.
The selection will be made by the international committee appointed by
the organization of the Festival. A first selection will be done in
October 2012, to choose the participant movies to all sections. The
same committee, in November 2012, will finally indicate the award
winners of the sections and of the special mentions. They will receive
the award during the congress organized the last day of the festival,
December 9, 2012 at Royal Palace in Caserta.

------Workshop
ISTITUTO SUPERIORE REGIONALE ETNOGRAFICO DELLA SARDEGNA

In collaboration with David and Judith MacDougall from the Research
School of Humanities & the Arts, Australian National University will
offer a 7-day VIDEO WORKSHOP IN VISUAL ANTHROPOLOGY 7-13 September
2012 at the Istituto Superiore Etnografico della Sardegna in Nuoro,
Sardegna (Italy).
This workshop is being offered to persons with little or no prior
experience of video production who wish to use video in forthcoming
research projects.
It is open to graduate students and others with at least three years
of tertiary education. The workshop will include basic video training
and theoretical discussions of how video may be applied to research
and publication in anthropology and related disciplines.
The emphasis will be upon the conceptual rather than the technical
side of video practice.
The workshop is intensive and will be conducted all day for each of
the seven days, with morning sessions normally reserved for group
instruction, screenings, and discussion, and the afternoons for
individual practical exercises in and around Nuoro. Although the
workshop will not provide direct instruction in video editing, it will
make use of a strategic approach to filming and "editing in the
camera" so that students will learn to produce materials that can be
edited effectively.
We believe video can be used for field research without extensive
training, provided one learns certain basic skills and overcomes the
most commonly made mistakes. We also believe video can be used to do
more than merely gather visual records. It can be used to approach
knowledge in new ways, in a form of discourse significantly different
from that of written texts. We therefore approach this medium as a new
"language" that researchers can acquire and apply to their own
disciplines.
The workshop will be conducted by internationally-known ethnographic
filmmakers David and Judith MacDougall. The MacDougalls have produced
many ethnographic films and have wide-ranging experience in teaching
ethnographic film and video techniques in Australia, USA, Norway,
India, and China.

Heywood, Ian - Sandywell, Barry (eds)
THE HANDBOOK OF VISUAL CULTURE
2012, Berg Publishers

Visual culture has become one of the most dynamic fields of
scholarship, a reflection of how the study of human culture
increasingly requires distinctively visual ways of thinking and
methods of analysis. Bringing together leading international scholars
to assess all aspects of visual culture, the Handbook aims to provide
a comprehensive and authoritative overview of the subject. The
Handbook embraces the extraordinary range of disciplines which now
engage in the study of the visual - film and photography, television,
fashion, visual arts, digital media, geography, philosophy,
architecture, material culture, sociology, cultural studies and art
history. Throughout, the Handbook is responsive to the
cross-disciplinary nature of many of the key questions raised in
visual culture around digitization, globalization, cyberculture,
surveillance, spectacle, and the role of art.
The Handbook guides readers new to the area, as well as experienced
researchers, into the topics, issues and questions that have emerged
in the study of visual culture since the start of the new millennium,
conveying the boldness, excitement and vitality of the subject.

Signe Rousseau
FOOD MEDIA. CELEBRITY CHEFS AND THE POLITICS OF EVERYDAY INTERFERENCE
2012, Berg Publishers

There have been famous chefs for centuries. But it was not until the
second half of the twentieth century that the modern celebrity chef
business really began to flourish, thanks largely to advances in media
such as television which allowed ever-greater numbers of people to
tune in.

Food Media charts the growth of this enormous entertainment industry,
and also how, under the threat of the obesity "epidemic," some of its
stars have taken on new authority as social activists, while others
continue to provide delicious distractions from a world of potentially
unsafe food. The narrative that joins these chapters moves from
private to public consumption, and from celebrating food fantasies to
fueling anxieties about food realities, with the questionable role of
interference in people's everyday food choices gaining ground along
the way.

Covering celebrity chefs such as Jamie Oliver and Rachael Ray, and
popular trends like foodies, food porn and fetishism, Food Media
describes how the intersections between celebrity culture and food
media have come to influence how many people think about feeding
themselves and their families - and how often that task is complicated
when it need not be.
