Keynote Speaker: Karen Barad

In the past decade, feminist theory has elaborated new materialist
perspectives to re-imagine nature, biology, and matter more generally and
to critically address new developments in biology, physics, neuroscience
and other scientific disciplines. This scholarship revisits the
relationship between human corporeality and subjectivity, questions and
redefines the boundaries of human and non-human and nature and culture, and
elaborates on their mutual entanglements. New feminist theories address
materialization as a complex and open process and matter as lively and
productive.

This conference, organized jointly by the Center for the Study of Women and
Society and the Committee on Interdisciplinary Science Studies at the
Graduate Center, will engage with feminist perspectives on the
onto-epistemological questions raised by the materialist turn. We invite
papers from various disciplines that address a wide range of issues,
including, but not limited to:

- The intellectual and scientific context of the new turn toward materialism

- The relation of matter — including the biological body — to the social.

- The relation between new materialism and previous materialisms (such as
Marxism and phenomenology) and particularly their feminist elaborations.
What are the continuities and discontinuities between feminist materialisms
from the 1970s thru the current moment?

- The insights, knowledge and methodologies offered by the new materialist
studies of science offered. What new frontiers have they opened? What can
the "new sciences" offer for feminist theory?

- The political implications of neo-materialism for feminism as a project,
theory and a movement for social justice. How can we account for durable
hierarchies and the normative production of gender, race, class and
sexuality within new materialist frameworks?

- Critical applications of "agential realism," as elaborated by Karen
Barad, and other theoretical innovations for addressing material-discursive
relations and the epistemological questions they raise

- Empirical research using materialist feminist frameworks

SEMINAR: From Rhetoric to Practice: Implementing the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities

Staff, students, and members of the community are invited to attend
the first of four seminars on the rights of persons with disabilities.
This seminar will provide a forum for discussion of conceptual
challenges, legal standards and international best practices for
implementing the CRPD and constructively impacting the lives of people
with disabilities. The topics of discussion include challenges of
implementation, community living, accessibility to educational and
workplace institutions, mental capacity, and monitoring. The event
will also allow participants to reflect on the shift from traditional
welfare-oriented supports for persons with disabilities to a
rights-based model that affirms equality, independence and active
citizenship.

Read CFHSS's pre-budget submission

CFHSS delivered its 2013 pre-budget submission to the federal
government last month. Among other things, the submission recommends
that the government increase funding for the three federal research
granting agencies, that it invest in helping graduates transition into
the work place, and that it support greater cross-sector collaboration
to ensure all Canadians benefit from university research. Read the

CFHSS responds to report on international education

The Advisory Panel on Canada's International Education Strategy
released its report in August, calling for doubling the number of
international students and for 50,000 Canadian students to study
abroad, improving policy coordination, and the development of
comprehensive bilateral agreements, along with appropriate funding to
support them. CFHSS supports the recommendations made in the report.

SSHRC announces new executive vice-president

Last month, the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
announced the appointment of Ted Hewitt to the post of executive
vice-president. Previously, Ted Hewitt served as vice-president,
research and international relations, at Western University.


ERA-Can releases COOPERATION calls for proposals

ERA-Can has published a list of calls for proposals for the
COOPERATION programme for 2013. The COOPERATION Programme supports
proposals from multi-national, multi-sectoral consortia. Each proposal
must include a minimum of three partners from three different European
Member States or Associated Countries. Some calls for proposals are
specifically targeted to Canadians. The list is available here.

CIHR release summary of feedback to proposed changes

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research have released a document
summarizing the feedback they received on the proposed reforms to the
Open Suite of Programs and peer review process from the research

Imagining Canada's Future: SSHRC holding regional panels

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council is hosting a
series of regional panels across Canada to discuss how the social
sciences and humanities research community can contribute to Canada's

Harry Ransom Center Fellowship in the Humanities and Acfas call for
submissions

The Harry Ransom Center is receiving applications for more than 50 of
its 2013-2014 research fellowships in the humanities.



The Association francophone pour le savoir (Acfas) has released a call
for submissions for its 81st Congress, which will be held from May 6
to May 10, 2013 at the Université Laval under the theme "Savoirs sans
frontières."

Senior Program Officer - Nigeria Evidence-based Health System
Initiative (NEHSI)


Job Overview

The Nigeria Evidence-based Health System Initiative (NEHSI) is a
collaborative project between the Government of Nigeria, the Canadian
International Development Agency (CIDA) and the International Development
Research Centre (IDRC) with the mandate of contributing to the
strenghtening of the health care system to deliver effective, efficient
and equitable primary health care in two states of Nigeria.

The Senior Program Officer, working under the guidance of the Project
Leader of NEHSI, develops, monitors, manages, and evaluates a portfolio of
small research projects; coordinates formal reporting to CIDA;
analyzes or commissions analyses of funded projects to identify and
document lessons learnt; leads the development and management of the NEHSI
communication strategy including documentation and active
dissemination of program outputs; directly supports NEHSI partnerships;
and assists senior team members with the range of tasks associated with
the project portfolio and successful implementation of the NEHSI
(including, liaison with the regional offices, donor relations,
publications, seminars colloquia).

Job Overview

The Governance for Equity in Health Systems (GEHS) program strives to
strengthen health systems recognizing the importance of governance and
equity issues. GEHS works through a combination of direct grant-making and
programs of work based on partnership with other donors and development
actors. The Program supports capacity development activities and research
initiatives that address the connections within health systems and
challenges of power relations and decision making to ensure resources are
allocated to the most vulnerable.

As the Program Management Officer, under the supervision of the Program
Leader, you will contribute to the development and operation of the
Program, produce documentation, and coordinate and disseminate
information in support of the program management. With a focus on donor
partnership projects, your principal responsibilities will include
coordination of the donor partnership projects, evaluation coordination
and support, knowledge management, communications and network
development, and liaising with key internal and external constituents.
This year, the focus will be on monitoring and evaluation of a large donor
partnership project in Nigeria, supporting the West African GEHS portfolio
and provide support for new partnership projects.

chevronné à s’acquitter d’une foule de tâches
associées au portefeuille de projets et à
l’exécution de ce qui est prévu au descriptif du (NEHSI)
(notamment liaison avec les bureaux régionaux, relations avec les

Le programme Gouvernance pour l’équité dans les
systèmes de santé (GEES) appuie la recherche dans les pays en
développement dans le but de renforcer les systèmes de
santé et d’améliorer l’état de santé de la
population. Le programme porte sur plusieurs axes thématiques et
régions et examine, entre autres, les systèmes
d’information sur la santé, le financement, la prestation des
services, l’accès et la gouvernance.

Sous la supervision du chef de programme, l’agent de gestion des
programmes contribue à l’élaboration et à la mise en
oeuvre de la programmation, produit de la documentation et coordonne et
diffuse de l’information. Mettant l’emphase sur la gestion de
projet de partenariat avec les bailleurs de fonds, la coordination
d’évaluation et de soutien, il se charge particulièrement
de gestion des connaissances, de communication, de mise sur pied de
réseaux et de liaison avec des parties prenantes clés à
l’interne comme à l’extérieur. Cette année,
l’accent sera mis sur le suivi-évaluation d’un projet au
Nigéria et donc offrant un support au projet de l’Afrique de
GEES.

Cultural Anthropology

The Department of Anthropology at McMaster University invites
applications for a tenure-track position in cultural anthropology at
the assistant professor level. The research focus should be in
critical and/or applied medical anthropology with an excellent
understanding of, and experience with, Participatory Action or
Community-Based Research and methods of community engagement. The
geographical area of specialization is open, although preference will
be given to candidates with areas of specialization that complement
current faculty strengths.

Candidates will have completed a Ph.D. and will have a strong research
record and a demonstrated record of excellence in teaching at the
undergraduate and graduate levels. We expect the person who fills this
position to take an active role in scholarship and to contribute to
the department?s strong tradition of collegiality and collaboration.

All qualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadian
citizens and permanent residents will be considered first for this
