Invitation: Anthropology, Data Management and Sharing and Ethics Event at SOAS May 9 2018
Is Anthropology Legal?
Conversations between Anthropologists and
Professional Data Managers
Brunei Gallery Lecture Theatre
SOAS University of London
Wednesday 9 May 2018
During this half-day workshop we will explore the implications of the introduction of
the EU General Data Protection Regulation on 25
th May 2018 in relation to what it is
that anthropologists actually do 'in the field'. We will hear from the UK Data Archive
on how researchers need to respond to the GDPR in relation to their data collection
and management as well as funder requirements for data sharing. This will be
followed by an overview of current ASA Ethical Guidelines, plans for their revision
and the future challenges to anthropological research posed by technological
developments and new regulatory frameworks.
The rest of the afternoon will look at three key issues in more depth – informed
consent, anonymisation and data sharing. Each topic will be introduced by a
researcher who will share considerations and challenges, followed by break-out
sessions for group discussion each led by a professional data manager. The break-out
sessions will encourage debate between researchers and data managers, as well as
practical advice.
The event is free and open to researchers at all levels who use anthropological
methodologies in their research as well as data managers who support them.
