Conférence publique de Laurajane Smith : Patrimoine et politiques de reconnaissance

Laurajane Smith est professeure et directrice de l'École d'archéologie et d'anthropologie à l'Université nationale d'Australie, à Canberra. Elle a fondé l'Association of Critical Heritage Studies.

Elle présentera ses recherches en cours qui portent sur le pouvoir politique du patrimoine et ses conséquences au regard des théories de la philosophie politique sur la diversité et la redistribution. La conférence ciblera ainsi les politiques de la reconnaissance qui, depuis la fin des années 1960, visent à soutenir, voire à influencer les transformations du paysage politique, en particulier en ce qui concerne les revendications identitaires. Laurajane Smith proposera de considérer des expressions du patrimoine et leurs idées sous-jacentes, qu'il s'agisse de monuments des confédérés, d'expositions de musées d'histoire nationale ou de centres culturels locaux, comme partie intégrante d'une politique de reconnaissance, tout particulièrement lorsqu'elles contribuent à l'appréhension des nuances de la redistribution du pouvoir et des quêtes que celle-ci inspire. Elle soutiendra que cette prise en compte offre de nouvelles perspectives pour interpréter l'impact politique du patrimoine, avec les lourdes conséquences que cela impose de considérer en matière d'éthique et de responsabilité politique des professionnels du patrimoine et des musées.

Laurajane Smith is professor and head of the School of Archaeology and Anthropology, and director of the Centre for Heritage and Museum Studies, at the Australian National University, Canberra. She is founder of the Association of Critical Heritage Studies.

This talk investigates the utility of theorizations in political philosophy around diversity and redistribution for understanding the political power and consequences of heritage. The politics of recognition is an attempt to both explain and address ways of influencing post-1960's transformations in the political landscape, and in particular the politics of identity claims. Laurajane Smith argues that various ideas and expressions of heritage, whether that heritage be confederate statues, museum displays of national history, or local community cultural centres, may on the one hand be understood as implicated in the politics of recognition and on the other hand contribute to understanding the nuances of struggles for recognition and redistribution. She suggests that a consideration of the politics of recognition opens up new ways of evaluating and assessing the consequences and political impact of heritage that in turn requires a revaluation of the ethical and political responsibilities of heritage and museum professionals.
