Events/Évènements-Other/Autres:

Sherry Ortner at the Centre for Ethnography UTSC April 9th

The Centre for Ethnography at UTSC is proud to celebrate its 10th
anniversary!

Please join us for a reception and this year's distinguished lecture,
to be delivered by Sherry Ortner, one of the best-known anthropologists
today. She is Distinguished Professor at UCLA and former Chair of the
Departments of Anthropology at the University of Michigan and Columbia.
Among her many achievements, she has held a MacArthur Fellowship (the
so-called "genius award"). She has written two books on the religious
life of the Sherpas of Nepal and a book on the relationships of Sherpa
guides with foreign climbers on Mt. Everest. She also conducted a memorable
study tracing the members of her high school graduating class in order to
document the effects of class and culture on life trajectories in the
United States. She has been a pioneer in feminist anthropology and, if
all this wasn't enough, she has written a book about independent filmmakers
in the US.

Please circulate this message widely, to your faculty, CASCA membership, etc.

May thanks,

Donna Young
Director of the Centre for Ethnography, UTSC
