FEB 7: LAND AND LIFE IN TKARONTO WITH SUSAN BLIGHT

Hancock Lecture 2017

Land and Life in Tkaronto: New Solidarities Toward a Decolonial Future

Details: What does a decolonial future look like? How do we get there?
Join us for a groundbreaking lecture by Susan Blight as we explore the
past, present and future of local Indigenous peoples and lay the
groundwork for a future without borders and without boundaries.
Informed by her unique perspective, Susan will uncover the ways that
global citizens will find new opportunities for fellowship and action.

Susan is an Anishinaabe artist and co-founder of the Ogimaa Mikana
project, an art collective working to reclaim the streets and
landmarks of Anishinaabeg territory with Anishinaabemowin. This work
is rooted in creative interventions in public space as strategies for
language revitalization and restoring Anishinaabe social relations
with other beings and the land itself. This action comes as a response
to the historical methods of the Canadian state as it sought to
dispossess Indigenous peoples from the land through assimilation
policies, which has had and continues to have devastating effects on
Indigenous languages.

Guided by ancestors and committed to future generations, Ogimaa Mikana
seeks to activate a decolonial future where Anishinaabe language is
heard, spoken, and valued.
Using the work of Ogimaa Mikana as its
genesis, this year's Hancock Lecture explores the ways in which the
revitalization of Indigenous languages has implications for new ways
of thinking about solidarity building, creative practices of
resistance, and activating decolonial futures within Tkaronto and
beyond.

Following her presentation, Susan will be joined for an onstage
discussion with artist and activist Kim Katrin Milan and moderator
Karyn Recollet.

JAN. 19: ILCA SEMINAR - DOCUMENTING SOUTHERN LABRADOR INUIT
PERSPECTIVES ON AGING WELL USING PHOTOVOICE

The Institute for Life Course and Aging presents
Jessica E Pacem PhD, Post-Doctoral Fellow, Department of Health, Aging
& Society and the Gilbrea Centre for Studies in Aging, McMaster
University
ENGAGING IN PLACE: USING PHOTOVOICE TO DOCUMENT SOUTHERN LABRADOR
INUIT PERSEPECTIVES ON AGING WELL

Long-term impacts of colonialism and disadvantages in the social
determinants of health put older Indigenous people at significantly
increased risk for poor physical and mental health as they age. Dr.
Pace will present results from a community-based, participatory
research study which utilized the Photovoice method to explore
southern Labrador Inuit perspectives of transitions into aging and
dementia. Dr. Pace will speak to the salience of place, culture,
family, and community in southern Inuit representations of aging well
and the need for the development of culturally safe supports and
services which support this population to age in place.

Thursday January 19 from 12noon to 1:00pm, 263 McCaul, 4th Floor Classroom.

Note: This seminar will be recorded and can be accessed within a week
at: http://aging.utoronto.ca/ under Events > Noon-Hour Seminars
