Reminder: CASCA/SANA2016 panel CFP: Solidarities with Indigenous Peoples in Canada and Beyond
Reminder:
Solidarities with Indigenous Peoples in Canada and Beyond
Anthropologists work with and for Indigenous peoples in Canada and
beyond. They expose negative representations about Indigenous peoples
within all forms of media. In consultation with Indigenous
stakeholders, anthropologists revise education programs, systems and
resources providing better access and culturally appropriate
instruction. Anthropologists act as expert witnesses for Indigenous
peoples within the courts. They work toward solutions to pressing
health challenges and problems confronting Indigenous peoples. Applied
anthropologists work closely with Indigenous peoples on a host of
practical projects designed to address routine and extraordinary needs
while creating capacity within communities. Anthropologists
collaborate with Indigenous historians and linguists building archives
using Indigenous knowledge and practices to save and maintain
Indigenous histories and languages. These panels invite, among other
things, anthropologists and Indigenous peoples to reflect upon what
solidarity requires, where solidarity-building has worked or not, and
what could have been done differently.

Cultural Heritage Diplomacy: How Nations use Historic Sites for Political Ends - November 25
événement/event
le français suit
2015-2016 series on HERITAGE AND SOCIAL JUSTICE
Why exactly is ISIS destroying the cultural past of Iraq and Syria, and why
is finding a resolution so difficult? How does the funding of maritime
archaeology off the coast of Sri Lanka and Kenya connect with the disputes
now brewing in the South China Sea? And why is Japan investing hundreds of
millions of dollars in heritage conservation projects around the world? In
what ways are such examples linked? Are we seeing the emergence of a new
arena of international relations, one that uses the past in new and
unfamiliar ways?

Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries: Grants to Scholars
Friends of the UW-Madison Libraries: Grants to Scholars
Grants to Scholars is the Friends program which helps to fund visiting
scholars with particular research needs in the University of
Wisconsin-Madison Libraries. The Friends award a handful of grants to
scholars annually, each of which is generally for one month's
duration, for research in the humanities, sciences, and related fields
appropriate to the libraries' collection strengths. Awards are made up
to $2,000 for recipients from North America, and $3,000 for those from
elsewhere in the world. The purpose is to foster the high-level use of
the University of Wisconsin–Madison Libraries' rich holdings, and to
make them better known and more accessible to a wider circle of
scholars. The annual application deadline is February 1 of any year.
Generally, applicants must have a Ph.D. or be able to demonstrate a
record of solid intellectual accomplishment. Scholars and graduate
students who have completed all requirements except the dissertation
are also eligible. Applicants' proposals should state the specific
areas and collections to be used in our libraries and provide
information as to why these collections will be of unique benefit to
their research. The grants to scholars are designed primarily to help
provide access to UW-Madison library resources for people who live
beyond commuting distance. Preference is given to younger researchers
who are within 10 years of completing their Ph.D. or terminal degree,
and to scholars who reside outside a 150 mile radius of Madison. The
grantee is expected to be in residence during the term of the award,
which may be taken up at any time during the year.

Call for Applications “On Energy”, Research Residency Program, Banff Research in Culture, May 30-June 24, 2016
Call for Applications "On Energy", Research Residency Program, Banff
Research in Culture, May 30-June 24, 2016
"On Energy" invites participants in the fields of visual art,
architecture, design, literature, humanities, social sciences, and
physical sciences to consider energy; its conceptual, corporal, and
cultural development since its thermodynamic invention, and the sort
of materialism that can emerge when energy is redefined in a
postindustrial capitalist society. This residency asks artists and
researchers to collectively address energy's historical figures and
futures, its visual and social economy, and its capacity to disfigure,
since energy is not a thing, but rather a representation of the force
embedded in matter and the relations between materials.
Banff Research in Culture (BRiC) is a research residency program
designed for scholars engaged in advanced theoretical research on
themes and topics in culture. BRiC is designed to offer researchers
with similar interests from different disciplinary and professional
backgrounds an opportunity to exchange opinions and ideas.
Participants are encouraged to develop new research, artistic,
editorial, and authorial projects, both individually and in connection
with others.
During the residency, participants will attend lectures, seminars, and
workshops offered by visiting faculty. The residency will help to
develop new approaches toward the study and analysis of culture, as
well as creating lasting networks of scholars who might use this
opportunity as the basis for future collaborative work. This program
is open to current PhD researchers and post-doctoral researchers
(faculty up to tenure) beginning their careers.
Application Deadline: December 16, 2015
Applications information can be found at:

CASCA/SANA 2016: Panel CFP - Solidarity with who?: On the Challenges of Studying Up
Solidarity with who?: On the Challenges of Studying Up
Session to be submitted for the CASCA/SANA meetings at Dalhousie
University, May 11 - 15, 2016
Anthropologists often position themselves in solidarity with marginal
groups, frequently represented by our research participants. Yet, for
several decades, anthropologists have also focused on studying
powerful institutions, including sites of scientific and technological
practice, government bureaucracies, and legal and policing systems.
Through this practice of "studying-up," anthropologists unpack the
meanings and practices of those operating within and through often
opaque institutional systems, providing a means of understanding and
often critiquing operations of power (Nader 1989). Yet, conducting
ethnographies of powerful actors and institutions can put us at odds
with the interests, goals, and politics of our research participants.
This panel invites papers that explore the complexities of enacting
solidarities while "studying-up," including discussions of productive
and problematic solidarities in the field and beyond, different means
and forms of solidarity, analyses of critical versus collaborative
approaches to ethnography, and considerations of relationships other
than solidarity in fieldwork.
Please send inquiries and abstracts to Samantha Breslin

and/or written submissions
Deadline Written Responses January 15, 2016
Toronto Town Hall November 16, 2015
The Gender Wage Gap Strategy Steering Committee is consulting Ontarians on
how to close the wage gap between men and women. They will examine how
women are affected by the gender wage gap, at work, in their family, and in
their community. They will assess how government, business, labour, other
organizations, and individual leaders can work together to resolve issues
that may cause the wage gap. The Gender Wage Gap Strategy Steering
Committee has created two consultation papers. One is for organizations,
and one is for individuals. Each has information about the gender wage gap,
as well as the questions the Steering Committee hopes will be answered.
Public˜town hallsessions will be held across the province and all are
invited to attend and/or contribute via online submissions.

Amidst ongoing, contemporary colonialism and new threats to Indigenous
nations, we will discuss everyday acts of resurgent and the
restoration of land-based practices within Indigenous communities
today. By drawing on several comparative examples of resurgence from
Cherokees in Kituwah, Lekwungen protection of camas (in Victoria, BC),
and Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiian) revitalization of kalo, we will
examine strategies for re-asserting self-determining authority of
Indigenous nations and new pathways for representing themselves on
their own terms.

Ontario Ministry of Labour: Closing the Gender Wage Gap Public town halls
and/or written submissions
For details and a schedule of town hall sessions:

Nominate an Article for BSA Climate Change Study Group Prize by 20 November 2015
Climate Change Study Group
Article Prize
Nominate by 12pm 20th November 2015
What is the best (broadly) sociological article you have read – or
written! - on climate change? Why not nominate it for the British
Sociological Association's Climate Change Study Group's Article Prize?
The prize will be awarded to the best article - as selected by a
panel of judges - addressing any aspect of the sociology of climate
change that has been published in a peer-reviewed journal in the last
year (since November 2014). Prize winners will be invited to present
and discuss their work at a celebratory event in spring 2016.
The winning article will receive £50 in book vouchers (with the
second article winning £25 and the third winning £25). To nominate an
article, simply email the article title and abstract together with a
short (max 150 words) statement of why you think your chosen article
deserves to win the prize to Pennie Drinkall
p.drinkall@lancaster.ac.uk by 12.00pm on Friday 20th November 2015.
The judges will draw up a shortlist based on the abstract and
nomination. Shortlisted authors will be asked to send in the full
article. Prize winning articles will be selected from this shortlist
and winners will be announced in January 2016. The judging panel is
comprised of last year's winners: Prof. Martin Phillips, University
of Leicester; Dr Ritsuko Ozaki, Imperial College London; Dr Warren
Pearce, University of Nottingham.
Eligibility
· The nominated article must have been published in a
peer-reviewed journal between November 2014 and October 2015.
· Nominations for sole and joint authored articles are
welcome (if they win, joint authors will have to share the prize).
· The paper can be published in any journal, as long as the
article's contribution to climate change sociology (broadly defined)
is clear.
· Entry is open to all: nominated authors do not need to be
members of the BSA.
We're looking forward to receiving your nominations!
Thanks

Reminder: CASCA/SANA2016 panel Call for Proposals - More-Than-Human Solidarities: Conceptual Insights and Multispecies Political Possibilities
Call for Proposals
More-Than-Human Solidarities: Conceptual Insights and Multispecies
Political Possibilities
Session to be submitted for the CASCA/SANA meetings at Dalhousie
University, May 11-15, 2016
Session organized by Kendra Coulter, Brock University
Interest in human-animal-environmental relations, posthumanism, and
multispecies ethnography is growing within and beyond anthropology.
How do and could webs of solidarity that move beyond anthropocentrism
figure in social theory, methods, and praxis, and in the many
communities with which scholars are involved? In this session, we will
highlight and analyze more-than-human approaches to solidarity, and
consider both the challenges and possibilities of such political and
ethical commitments. In the interest of breadth and a holistic
discussion, and in keeping with the spirit of solidarity, papers
concentrating on solidaristic dynamics that are
ethnographically-rooted, conceptual, action-oriented, and/or
exploratory are welcome. Please send inquiries and/or short abstracts
(150 words) to Kendra Coulter by December 1st, 2015 at
kcoulter@brocku.ca
