Upcoming Talk:
Professor Esmeralda Thornhill
"Reading R. v RDS: A Key to Understanding the Dynamics of 'Race'
and Gender Intersecting"
Date: Friday, September 25, 2015
1:00pm
Simone de Beauvoir Institute
2170 Bishop Street
Concordia University, Montreal
Abstract: To many Black women compelled to chart and pilot our lives
in the interstices between `race` and gender, everything has
changed, but nothing has really changed. Eighteen years ago the
Supreme Court of Canada delivered a ground-breaking decision on 'race'
and racism in the landmark case, R. v. RDS – an eye-opener on several
levels. This case which started out as the criminal trial in
Family Court of a Black youth on a bicycle, ended up with the Black
female trial judge herself being "tried" by the legal, political,
and social systems of our country. RDS opens a direct window on
the complex dynamics, inevitable ongoing tensions, and palpable
material reality that all come into play when 'race' and gender
intersect. The case's historical and legal significance cannot be
understated. Yet, more important than the actual court case itself
is the aftermath and attendant fall-out, so rife with egregious
acts of omission and commission that individually and collectively,
we are impelled to question the glaring contradictions between the
equality "speak" and actual praxis of t so many well- intended
do-gooders… feminist practitioners not excepted.
BIO: Esmeralda Thornhill is a lawyer, linguist, and pedagogue by
training, a lecturer, researcher, anti-racism trainer and writer by
experience, and a community advocate and organizer by conviction. A
seasoned Human Rights educator, she is currently a tenured Full
Professor of Law at Schulich School of Law (Dalhousie) where she
was appointed the first scholar to anchor and pilot the
distinguished James Robinson Johnston Endowed Chair in Black Canadian
Studies (1996-2002), an unprecedented national initiative
"established to bring Black culture, reality, perspectives,
experiences and concerns into the Academy". Called to the provincial
Bars of both Quebec (1987) and Nova Scotia (1998), she is also a
2006-2007 Canada-US Fulbright Visiting Scholar (Temple), and served as
McGill University's First O'Brien Fellow in Residence (2012). The
recipient of two honorary doctorates (CUNY 1996, Concordia ,1997),
Professor Thornhill holds the following credentials, notably: BA
Joint Honours (McGill), Second Language Education (McGill), M.A.
(Montreal), LLB. (UQAM) Diploma in International and Comparative Law
(San Diego- Paris). As a direct outcome of the 1982 First
International Conference on Teaching and Research Related to Women,
hosted by the Simone de Beauvoir Institute (ISdB), she
conceptualized, developed, and taught the first Canadian
university-accredited course on Black Women's Studies, Black Women:
The Missing Pages from Canadian Women's Studies( (ISdB 1983, 1988),
along with Confrontation and Collaboration: Issues in Canadian Women's
Studies (1988) . A founding member of the Congress of Black Women of
Canada, she served as national President from 1989-1991, was the first
woman of colour appointed to the Quebec Council on the Status of Women
(1981), was profiled in Ces 350 femmes qui ont bâti Montréal, and was
honoured with Quebec's 1992 Salon de la femme Woman of the Year
Award for Humanitarian and Social Action. R v S (RD) [1997] 3 S.C.R.

Continental Colonialism – The ‘other’ Colonialism
CfP: Forms of Continental Colonialism – The 'other' Colonialism (14 -
15 July 2016)
Dear Colleagues,
I'm preparing a small international conference at the Max Planck
Institute for Social Anthropology in Halle/Saale (Germany) for July
2016 and I'm still looking for somebody who would be interested to
cover Canada and/or Northern America.
This workshop is dedicated to the various forms (formats) of
continental colonialism worldwide which, due to predominant discourses
on over-seas and post-colonialism, has been neglected and got out of
the focus somehow. We shall discuss case studies on continental,
internal, and crypto colonialisms from various macro-regions in
contrasting perspectives. For details, please, see the CfP attached
and the announcement at our website: http://www.eth.mpg.de/en/events.
(Originally the deadline for abstracts was September 30, but may be
expended for interested contributors.)
This CfP (link below) has been circulated through various networks for
several months already. At the moment, Russia and China (as imperial
formations) and India are more or less covered, while the two Americas
and Africa are not. In case you are interested, please, contact the
conference convenor Dittmar Schorkowitz (schorkowitz@eth.mpg.de).
With best wishes,
Dittmar Schorkowitz

Upcoming Lecture: A Political-Economy Approach to Language Rights
Prof. Jeff Bale,
Language & Literacies Education, , OISE/University of Toronto
Friday, 25 September 2015 - 1:00 pm to 2:30 pm
OLBI Research Forum
Location: 139 Louis Pasteur (map)
Room number:
286, University of Ottawa, Ottawa
There has been robust debate within political science and applied
linguistics alike about the legitimacy and viability of language
rights as a strategy for resolving language conflicts in society. This
paper introduces a political-economy approach as elaborated by Bale
(2015), Holborow (2015), and Ricento (2015) to rethink the potential
of language rights.
Jeff Bale is associate professor of Language & Literacies Education at
OISE/University of Toronto. His research focuses on language policy,
history of education, and language teacher education. His work has
appeared in Language Policy, Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, and
Teachers College Record, and he is co-editor with Sarah Knopp of
Education and Capitalism: Struggles for Leaning and Liberation
(Haymarket Books, 2012). Bale taught ESL and German for 10 years in
urban secondary schools in the United States before moving into
academic work.
This event is sponsored by the Language Management Interdisciplinary
Research Group (LMIRG).
