FRIDA -Young Feminist Fund - Call for Proposals 2014: Apply for a Grant
For more information:
En: http://youngfeministfund.org/apply-for-a-grant-2/
Fr: http://youngfeministfund.org/fr/
FRIDA | The Young Feminist Fund is the only youth-led fund focused
exclusively on supporting global young feminist activism to advance
social justice movements and agendas. FRIDA was created to bring new
resources and new opportunities to young women and trans* youth
globally. We believe that supporting young feminists is key to the
expansion, rejuvenation and sustainability of women's movements and
organizations, both now and in the future. To date, FRIDA has
completed two grant cycles in 2012 and 2013, and cumulatively
supported 32 different groups of young feminists in 28 different
countries around the world and awarding a total of 196,000 USD in
direct grants.
We are excited to be launching our third call for proposals and
intend to support up to 18 new young feminist groups led by young
women and transgender youth under 30 years of age.
DEADLINE FOR APPLICATIONS: 28th July 2014
Who can apply?
- Groups founded or led by young women or trans* youth (under 30
years) that are committed to:
Advancing and defending women's rights from a feminist perspective;
Improving the lives of young women/transgender youth at local,
national, regional or international levels;
Inclusive organizing, collective action and feminist movement building
- Groups, networks, or collectives based in the Global South
(Africa, Asia and the Pacific, The Middle East, Latin America and
the Caribbean and Central, Southern, Eastern Europe and Caucuses and
Central Asia).
- Groups founded in the past 5 years (i.e. your group was formed
between 2010 - 2014).
FRIDA uses the term 'feminist' broadly to refer to individuals
working within women's movements or in other social movements to
promote and work towards the safety, equality, justice, rights and
dignity of girls, women and other marginalized groups. Based on the
understanding that fundamental discrimination occurs within
patriarchal systems of domination in all societies, young feminists
are determined to challenge, address and change the root causes of
these existing inequalities, rights violations and injustice. We
recognize that there are multiple feminisms and foster opportunities
for expressing those principles in our work. FRIDA emphasizes
feminist principles throughout all of its work. These principles
include: non-hierarchy, collectivity, participation, diversity, and
inclusion. We define young feminist activists as individuals from
across the gender spectrum committed to advancing gender equality
and women's rights through explicitly feminist means. FRIDA focuses
on activism led by feminists under 30 years of age.
Priority will be given to:
Small, emerging grassroots groups, networks, or collectives with
little or no access to funding from larger donors.
Groups, networks, or collectives that are working on emerging or
issues that have not received prior funding.
Groups, networks, or collectives located in remote underserved areas.
Groups, networks, or collectives that are diverse in their
membership and made up of and/or working with socially marginalized
young women especially: refugees, ethnic, national and caste
minorities, rural women, urban poor, lesbian, bisexual, transgender,
women living with HIV/AIDS, sex workers, women with disabilities,
women living in armed conflicts and post conflict zones.
Groups using creative and innovative strategies to further their
activism (including art, music, culture, poetry, social media etc).
What is NOT supported by FRIDA?
Groups or organizations that display an intolerant attitude towards
others on the basis of age, religion, sex, race/ethnicity,
disability, class or sexual orientation.
Organizations working with young women and trans youth but led by
individuals over 30 years of age. We do not fund youth "programs" of
existing organizations - we fund youth-led groups.
Scholarships, internship or school fees (including Doctoral or other
research)
Groups with budgets over $25,000 USD
Proposals submitted by individuals, government institutions,
political organizations or religious groups.
Groups that focus only on the provision of direct services (e.g.
community literacy, formal education, technical training, craft or
health care etc).
Groups that focus on income generating activities.
Groups based in the following highly-industrialized countries:
Australia, Austria, Belgium, Canada, Denmark, Estonia, Finland,
France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Japan, Luxembourg,
New Zealand, Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, South Korea, Spain,
Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States
Funding Amounts & Length of Grant
FRIDA makes grants of up to $4,000 USD. They are flexible grants
that can be used for general support and/or projects to be used over
a period of 12 months and are open to renewal.
*Please Note: FRIDA recognizes the value of general support and
encourages groups to prioritize resources according to their own
needs. For example some groups may consider using FRIDA funds to
cover staff, administration, or organizational costs while others
may use funds to support establishing infrastructure or project
related costs.
Be Part of the Selection Process...You Decide!
FRIDA is committed to engaging young feminist-led groups in the
grant decision-making process. We view this as an empowering process
that provides participants with greater accountability and
investment. Applicants that meet FRIDA's criteria must vote for
their top propsal choices and give comments on their selections
(groups may not vote for their own proposals). In voting, we ask
that groups keep in mind what they think is important for the
promotion and defense of the rights of young women in their region.
After voting the results are tallied and grantees are selected.
How the FRIDA Grantmaking Process Works
Expectations of Successful Groups:
All grantees will be required to sign a grant agreement, which will
outline accounting, reporting, and other terms and conditions
regarding how funds will be distributed. Grantees will be required
to be in regular communication with FRIDA staff and will be required
to share regular updates of their work. Further details on reporting
will be provided after grants have been approved.
Important things to remember!
Before completing the application, please read the application
guidelines to determine your eligibility. Also, you can review the
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs).
http://youngfeministfund.org/grants-program/faqs/
All applications must directly benefit young women and transgender
youth in a culturally appropriate, sustainable, and gender inclusive

Open City Docs Fest presents films by the Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab
OPEN CITY DOCS FEST: LONDON'S GLOBAL DOCUMENTARY FESTIVAL, 17–22 JUNE
On Saturday 21st of June, Open City Docs Fest presents two events from the
Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab (SEL). Currently, the talk of the
documentary world, SEL work between the factual and poetic, challenging
classic ethnography and documentary film.
To accompany the screening of their most recent feature Manakamana,
Open City Docs Fest is also screening a collection of their short films:
*"Shorts: Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab" (2014), 16:00 Studio 1*
An eclectic selection of rarely seen short films produced by artists
working within the Harvard Sensory Ethnography Lab.
*Manakamana (2013), 20.30 ICA*
Manakamana is the latest work to emerge from the Harvard Sensory
Ethnography Lab and is a startling, one-of-a-kind documentary experience.
It is filmed entirely inside the narrow confines of a cable car
transporting villagers to an ancient mountaintop, temple high above a
jungle in Nepal. Over the course of eleven rides we gain a fascinating and
personal insight into the lives and perspectives of these passengers.
Open City Docs Fest is a live festival devoted to exploring the world
we live in through the vision of documentary film; creating a place
where people come together to celebrate the extraordinary and ordinary
lives of others.
Open City Docs Fest is organised by Open City Docs, creating an
environment where documentary film is as critical as other film genres
and enjoyed by more and more people. Open City Docs delivers films
screenings and live events, training programmes and projects
throughout the year including Open City Docs Fest, MyStreet and Open
City Docs School. (www.opencitydocsfest.com)

*Girls with disabilities, education, and social change: Perspectives from a
collaborative project on monitoring educational rights in Viet Nam*
*Presenters: Dr. Claudia Mitchell, McGill University and Dr. Xuan Thuy
Nguyen, Mount St Vincent University.*
*When*: 12:00 pm – 1:30 pm, June 23rd, 2014
*Where*: Room 112, Center for the Education of Girls and Women, MSVU
2 Melody Dr – lower level
The presenters will discuss some critical issues on the politics of
inclusion and exclusion emerging from a collaborative project of monitoring
educational rights for girls with disabilities in Vietnamese schools. This
study is supported by the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council
of Canada (SSHRC). It is conducted by a multinational research team at
Mount Saint Vincent University, York University and McGill University in
Canada, and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in South Africa, in
partnership with UNICEF, and the grassroots Action to Community Development
Center in Vietnam. We will discuss the politics of disability research in
the context of international development and girls' education. We suggest
the need to reconstruct local knowledge that reflects the intersection
between disability and gender in education through a critical theoretical
and methodological framework that values the experiences of girls with
disabilities in the Global South.
*Claudia Mitchell* (MA, MVSU; PhD, U of Alberta) is a James McGill
Professor in the Faculty of Education, McGill University, Montreal, Canada
and an Honorary Professor at the University of KwaZulu-Natal in Durban
South Africa. Her research cuts across a variety of areas including visual
and other participatory methodologies in relation to youth, gender and
sexuality, girls' education, teacher identity, memory-work and critical
areas of international development linked to gender and HIV&AIDS. She is
the author or co-editor of more than 20 books in these areas. She is also
the co-editor of *Girlhood Studies: An Interdisciplinary Journal.*
*Xuan Thuy Nguyen* (MEd, McGill; PhD, McGill) is an adjunct professor in
the Department of Education at Mount Saint Vincent University and the
Principal Investigator of the Monitoring Educational Rights for Girls with
Disabilities in Vietnamese Schools Project. She was a postdoctoral fellow
and adjunct faculty member in the Critical Disability Studies program at
York University. Her areas of research include inclusive education,
disability studies, policy studies, international development and visual
methodologies. She has published her work in such journals as the
*International
Journal of Inclusive Educat*ion, *South African Journal of Education*,
*Journal
of Asian Critical Edu*cation, and *Childhood**.*

Disability Studies Speaker Series: The 'Urge to Know' and the Rise of
'New' Normals / The (Normal) Abnormality of Youth
Jun 17, 3 - 5 pm
What's at stake for disabled people when impairment labels function as
yet another set of criteria for 'normal'? What's 'normal' about youth?
Two disability studies experts explore these topics for the New
College Disability Studies Speaker Series:
The 'Urge to Know' and the rise of 'New' Normals - Dr. Rebecca
Mallett, Sheffield Hallam University
Dr. Mallett will explore the cultural work carried out by impairment
labels and consider what's at stake when they're deployed in response
to the 'urge to know' what's wrong. She'll delve into this 'urge to
know' as it manifests itself in personal encounters, scholarly
practice & popular culture.
The (Normal) Abnormality of Youth - Dr. Jenny Slater, Sheffield Hallam
University
Dr. Slater will explore how, through youth, 'abnormality' emerges as a
place allowed as a stage of 'normative development'. She'll argue,
however, this stage of (normal) abnormality of youth must be played
out by meeting other societal expectations ('masculinity',
heterosexual encounters, etc.) which set young people safely on the
path to adulthood. For those failing to conform, the (allowed)
'abnormality' of youth is harder to negotiate.

Storytelling by Tribal People of the Himalayas__Videoconference on Sat 7 June
Hello!
Acoustic Traditional
is a cultural organisation founded and operated by
tribal people of India.
One of its leaders, Koitso Salil Mukhia, has kindly
requested me to facilitate videoconference participation
(and webcast observation) relating to an Acoustic
Traditional event this coming Saturday (7 June).
Salil and team would be in Katmandu, Nepal.
I (Eric, director of the World Storytelling Institute)
would be at my home-base in Chennai, south India.
Acoustic Traditional has been conducting research
regarding storytelling traditions of numerous tribal
people of the Himalayas (in India, Nepal, Bhutan,
and Tibet).
These peoples include Kiranti people (such as Limbu,
Magar, Rai, and Koit people); and Lepcha people.
On Saturday in Katmandu, Salil would be hosting a
gathering of storytellers from a number of these peoples.
Salil would translate and retell the stories in English.
One mission of the event might be:
Through tribal people telling tribal stories,
the tribal cultures could become more known,
understood, and appreciated.
Thus, you are cordially invited to
1) join the videoconference,
2) observe a live webcast of the videoconference, and/or
3) observe an online recording of the webcast of the
videoconference.
The event would occur on Sat 7 June, beginning at --
8pm, Sydney time.
6pm, Singapore time.
3:30pm, India time.
11am, London time.
6am, USA east coast time.
3am, USA west coast time.
We would be using the Google videoconference
and webcast system.
Additional info regarding all of this is on

Claiming Space: Voices of Urban Aboriginal Youth
Opening June 1, 2014
O'Brian Gallery, MOA
Claiming Space: Voices of Urban Aboriginal Youth looks at the
diverse ways urban Aboriginal youth are asserting their identity and
affirming their relationship to both urban spaces and ancestral
territories. Unfiltered and unapologetic, over 20 young artists from
across Canada, the US, and around the world define what it really
means to be an urban Aboriginal youth today. In doing so they
challenge centuries of stereotyping and assimilation policies. This
exhibit will leave visitors with the understanding that today's urban
Aboriginal youth are not only acutely aware of the ongoing impacts of
colonization, but are also creatively engaging with decolonizing
movements through new media, film, fashion, photography, painting,
performance, creative writing and traditional art forms.
Artists in the exhibition include:
Alison Bremner (Tlingit), Deanna Bittern (Ojibwe), Jamie
Blankenship-Attig (Nlaka'pamux, Secwepemc, Nez Perce, Muskoday Cree),

Camp Fires: Queer Creativity as a Counterpoint to Repression
Speaker: Graeme Reid
Gardiner Museum
111 Queen's Park,
Toronto, ON
'Camp' provides a perspective on the world at odds with the
self-evident and taken for granted. Whether as a critique of good
taste, or an exposure of the arbitrary nature of gender roles, 'camp'
is the gaze of the outsider. Fire turns clay into ceramic and evokes
its own associations: warmth, protection and transformation. At Human
Rights Watch we are confronted with the dark underside of human
experience, the violence and abuse that is the daily reality of queer
lives around the globe. But we are also witness to resilience and
creativity in the midst of extreme hardship. 'Traditional values' and
a static view of culture is the rallying cry against lesbian, gay,
bisexual and transgender equality. Yet creative expression is the
lifeblood of any culture and vital to creative renewal. In his keynote
address Graeme Reid, director of the LGBT rights program at Human
Rights Watch, will explore the role of queer creativity as a
counterpoint to political repression and cultural straightjacketing.
Graeme Reid
Graeme Reid, director of the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender
Rights Program, is an expert on LGBT rights. He has conducted
research, taught and published extensively on gender, sexuality, LGBT
issues, and HIV/AIDS.
Before joining Human Rights Watch in 2011, Reid was the founding
director of the Gay and Lesbian Archives of South Africa, a researcher
at the Wits Institute for Social and Economic Research and a lecturer
in Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Studies at Yale University.
An anthropologist by training, Reid received an master's from the
University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, and a PhD from the
University of Amsterdam.

Initiative for Women in Business | Speaker Series
SESSION SYNOPSIS: Fifty years after the Equal Pay Act, why are women
still living in a man's world?
Debora Spar spent most of her life avoiding feminism. Raised after the
tumult of the '60s, she presumed that the gender war was over; she
swore to young women that yes, they could have it all. "We thought we
could glide into the new era with babies, board seats, and husbands in
tow", she writes. "We were wrong." Spar should know. One of the first
women professors at Harvard Business School, she went on to have four
children and became the chair of her department. Now she's the
president of Barnard College, arguably the most important all-women
school in the United States, an institution firmly committed to
feminism.
Wonder Women is Spar's story and the culture's. Armed with reams of
new research, she examines how women's lives have and have not changed
over the past forty years. The challenges confronting women are more
complex than ever. They stem from breast pumps and Manolo pumps; from
men whose eyes linger on a woman's rear and men who rush that same
rear out the door. They're problems that come inherently and
inevitably from being female. Yet they're falling on generations of
women who grew up believing that none of these things are supposed to
matter now. Wonder W omen gives us an important voice in an
increasingly heated debate. In this wise, often funny, always human,
and smartly conceived book, Spar asks: How far have women really come?
And what will it take to get true equality for good?
BIOGRAPHY: Debora Spar is the president of Barnard College, a women's
liberal arts college affiliated with Columbia University. She received
her doctorate in government from Harvard University and was the
Spangler Family Professor of Business Administration at Harvard
Business School. Spar is the author of numerous books, including
Ruling the Waves: Cycles of Invention, Chaos, and Wealth from the
Compass to the Internet and The Baby Business: How Money, Science, and
Politics Drive the Commerce of Conception.
