Dear Colleagues,

We are seeking a candidate to do a PhD in anthropology at the University of
Amsterdam investigating the psychological health and wellbeing of French
soldiers after combat. Could you please forward the announcement (see

We will assist the candidate in applying for a funded fellowship from the
Dutch Research Council though we cannot guarantee their proposal will be
accepted. The candidate should meet the following minimum criteria: 1)
hold a research masters degree in anthropology or related field, 2) have
French nationality, and 3) be able and willing to write the PhD and publish
in English.

Please note they should contact me by November 6.

Many thanks,

Alex

*Seeking researcher to do a PhD in anthropology on the psychological health
and wellbeing of French soldiers*

We are seeking a candidate to do a PhD in anthropology at the University of
Amsterdam in the Netherlands. Using ethnographic methods the research
would explore psychosocial problems experienced by French soldiers after
combat. The fieldwork would be conducted primarily in French, and the PhD
thesis would be written in English. The candidate would be expected to
publish results in English and French.

*Duration of research fellowship*

September 2014 – August 2017

*Research fellowship funding *

We have not yet secured funding for this research, but would work with the
candidate selected to apply for a three-year "talent fellowship" from the
Dutch Research Council (NOW). This fellowship application would be
submitted by the professor supervising the research in the name of the PhD
candidate. We would also consider other sources of funding.

*Supervision of the research*

The research would be jointly supervised by Alexander Edmonds and Vinh-Kim
Nguyen at the Amsterdam Institute for Social Science Research (AISSR) at
the University of Amsterdam (see link below). It would be linked to
Edmonds' comparative study of psychological health and wellbeing among
soldiers, funded by a European Research Council (ERC) "starting grant."

*Selection criteria*

n Research masters degree or equivalent in social or medical anthropology,
or related field

n Outstanding research record, demonstrated by academic recognition or
journal publication(s)

n Fluent in French and English and demonstrated potential to publish in
English-language academic journals

n Knowledge or experience of French armed forces desirable but not
essential

Send a CV and 1-2 page cover letter describing your background and interest
in the research topic to Alexander Edmonds,
alex.edmonds@gmail.com<javascript:;>,

develop a research proposal for submission to the Dutch Research Council *by
