Fieldwork opportunity Peruvian Central Coast

"Come to learn about ARCHAEOLOGY in Peru"

The Institute of Peruvian Studies (IEP), one of the most prestigious
research institutions in social sciences for Latin America, announces the
second laboratory season of its international Field School in the Peruvian
Central Coast.

Based on the beach town of Punta Hermosa, 30kms south of Lima, the
Peruvian Central Coast Field School offers personalized training in
laboratory methodologies where students will analyze the artifacts
recently recovered during 2013 season fieldwork at Panquilma; a XII-XVI
century community located in the hinterland of one of the most important
religious centers of the Andean coast: Pachacamac.

Workshops on a variety of subjects will be carried out for intensive
preparation in how to identify, classify, illustrate and describe
different types of artifacts, while interpreting them in chronological and
spatial contexts. During our excavations at Panquilma, an extensive
amount of amazingly well preserved material from public and domestic
sectors was collected; such as BOTANICAL REMAINS, CERAMIC, TEXTILES,
ANIMAL and HUMAN BONE, among others. If desired, students will select a
specific type of material from our collection to intensively study,
learning to elaborate detailed attribute analysis and typology.

PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY will be a special focus of research during this
season; students will have the OPPORTUNITY TO ANALYZE HUMAN OSTHEOLOGICAL
REMAINS recovered during the excavations at the funerary, domestic and
public sectors of the site. In this aspect, they will not only learn how
to identify each component of human structure; but also how to identify
age, health conditions, diet among other characteristics.

In addition, students may be able to obtain credit from their universities
after discussing that option with their department chair. Senior staff
would be willing to discuss this with the faculty staff and provide
feedback on student participation after the field season is completed.

the Lake Atitlán area and how they are adapting to changing demographics,
globalization, economic and political insecurities, and environmental
change. The program is not limited to students of NC State University and
many previous participants have come from all over the US, Canada, Chile,
the UK, and Guatemala. Some Spanish
language skills and some course work or familiarity with anthropology are
desirable. Students receive six credits for completing the program. The
program emphasizes practical training in ethnographic fieldwork and ethics
as it relates to Guatemala. In addition to learning research design,
systematic observation, interviewing, fieldnote-taking, free- listing,
pile-sorts, mapping, coding, ethics, data analysis, report writing, etc.,

Promising Uncertainties:
Unsettling the Future of Anthropological Terrain /

Incertitudes fructueuses:

What can uncertainty promise? Documenting indeterminacy, diversity,
disunity and contingency is both a political commitment as well an
empirical claim.
The 2014 CASCA conference theme seeks to draw out a range of questions
including but not limited to: what forms of social and cultural
engagements are possible when ambiguity rather than certainty is the
central concern of anthropological enquiry and/or ethnographic
practice? In what manner and to what extent does uncertainty unsettle
neo-liberal processes of classification, transparency and
accountability? Does a revolutionizing capitalism's search for new
markets foster promise and ambiguity? How does the measurement and
management of uncertainty under the monikers of 'risk', 'choice' and
'rights' affect political, social and ethical debates about domains as
diverse as immigration, identity politics, technology, art, media,
security, health, environment, and the economy? What are the paradoxes
that underpin or might emerge out of an anthropological engagement
with uncertainty? What might be the intended and unintended outcomes
of drawing on this paradigm for anthropology's interlocutors? What
forms of ethnographic practice might uncertainty give rise to and/or
destabilise?
While CASCA 2014 aims to stimulate discussions and critical
reflections on the theme of uncertainty, presentations that fall
outside of the proposed theme will also be considered.

Keynote Speaker
The Keynote speaker is Dr. Didier Fassin, the James D. Wolfensohn
Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study,
Princeton. Originally trained as a physician, his early research in
medical anthropology focused on the AIDS epidemic, mortality
disparities, and global health. More recently, his research has
focused on critical moral anthropology which explores the influence of
moral forms on everyday judgment and action, and on international
humanitarianism or asylum granting. He is the author of several books
including When Bodies Remember: Experiences of AIDS in South Africa
(UC Press, 2007) and Humanitarian Reason. A Moral History of the
Present (UC Press, 2011). More recently his work has focused on the
police, the prison, and the National Court of Asylum in France. His
most recent book is Enforcing Order: An Ethnography of Urban Policing
(Polity Press, 2013).

CASCA 2014

York University,
Toronto, Canada
30 avril - 3 mai, 2014
(http://casca2014.apps01.yorku.ca/french/)

Incertitudes fructueuses:

Wolfensohn, professeur de sciences sociales à l'Institute for Advanced
livres, incluant When Bodies Remember: Experiences of AIDS in South
Africa (UC Press, 2007), ainsi que Humanitarian Reason. A Moral
History of the Present (UC Press, 2011).
Order: An Ethnography of Urban Policing (Polity Press, 2013).

Student Opportunity - Economic Anthropology - Rhoda Halperin Memorial Fund - deadline December 15th

Rhoda Halperin Memorial Fund

The Rhoda Halperin Memorial Fund
celebrates the life and scholarly work of
Rhoda Halperin by supporting PhD
students in anthropology who emulate her
love of economic anthropology and her
concern for people living on the social
margin. In memory of Rhoda?s convivial colleagueship, the Fund
also encourages student professional development through
participation in the scholarly meetings of the SEA and AAA. To
meet these goals, students engaged in economic research focused on
social exclusion and poverty are provided small research grants and
subsequent travel money to present their findings at the Society for
Economic Anthropology annual conference.

- The primary task of the Fund is to support PhD students with
innovative approaches to research and a desire to engage the world
through their scholarship, and who need seed money for their
dissertation research.
-Because Rhoda Halperin?s career exemplified the integration of
anthropological theory with social activism, for the purposes of this
award, Economic Anthropology is broadly defined to include both
applied and non-applied issues, including social research that
engages with issues of poverty, exclusion from the political process,
and access to education.
- The Halperin Fund enables pre-doctoral travel and support for
dissertation research to help students develop their topics and
proposals.
-Recipients receive a primary grant of $1000 for doctoral research.
-Recipients receive a second award of $500 to supplement the costs
of traveling to the Society for Economic Anthropology spring
conference during the year following the research award in order to
give a poster session or paper reporting on the dissertation research
or background.

Students who meet the eligibility requirements may apply by
December 15, 2013. For further info:

comments, positions, and lessons from other contexts.

2) We also encourage CASCA members to submit pieces of interest to
anthropology students. Possible topics include, but are not limited to:

<http://services.uqo.ca/ConsultationBanqueProgrammes/programmes/7631.html>

ligne

<https://symbiose.uqo.ca/apps/uqo.admission.admissionenligne/>

d'ici au 15 octobre. Pour toutes questions relatives aux programmes,
communiquez avec le Module des sciences sociales
