Doctoral Fellow in
Social Anthropology
University of Bergen
A position as doctoral fellow in social
anthropology is available at the Department
of Social Anthropology, University of Bergen,
Norway. The fellowship has been established
in recognition of the distinguished contribution
of Professor Fredrik Barth, the Department's
founder, to anthropological knowledge. The
position runs for a fixed term of 3 years
from the date agreed including a year of
ethnographic fieldwork in a region of the
successful candidate's own choosing.
Applicants must have achieved a Master's
degree in social or cultural anthropology by the
closing date for applications. The fellowship is
open to citizens of countries outside the USA,
Canada, Japan, the European Community,
Australia and New Zealand.
The successful candidate must meet the
formal requirements for admission to the PhD
programme at the University of Bergen. A
proposal for the PhD project (total 6-8 pages)
must be submitted with the application.

The fellowship covers travel to and from
Bergen, basic accommodation, subsistence
and tuition costs in Bergen, and travel and
research maintenance in the field. The
candidate is expected to complete the PhD
programme within the 3-year period of the
fellowship.
