Gil Purcell Memorial Journalism Scholarship for Aboriginal Canadians
Deadline: November 1, 2016

To be awarded to an Aboriginal Canadian (status or non-status Indian,
Metis or Inuit) who is enrolled at a Canadian university or community
college. The student must already be attending the postsecondary
institution and must be either enrolled in a journalism program or
actively involved with a news organization associated with the
institution (such as a student newspaper or broadcast station).

Purpose:

To encourage Aboriginal Canadians to pursue a career in journalism
through a combination of studies at a Canadian postsecondary
institution and experience in a newsroom.

The Award:

A gift of $4,000, intended to defray education costs. Scholarship
recipients with appropriate experience and qualifications may also
receive an offer of temporary employment or other opportunities at The
Canadian Press, at the sole discretion of the scholarship provider.

It was established in 1990 in honor of Gillis Purcell, general manager
of The Canadian Press, the national news agency, from 1945 to 1969.
Many of the strengths and traditions of Canadian journalism had their
roots in his dedication to the quality of journalism.

Eligibility:

institution and must be either enrolled in a journalism program or

Canadians.

Selection:

Selection of the recipient will be made by a committee comprising
Canadian Press managers and supervisors.

Requirements:

2. Resumé/CV
3. Cover letter outlining in detail your aspirations for a career in
journalism

NOTE: In addition to these requirements, applicants are strongly
encouraged to provide samples of journalism activity they have
performed, such as news story clippings and/or discs (CD/DVD)
containing audio/video news reports.

The more newsroom and multimedia experience a candidate can
demonstrate, the better his or her chances of being short-listed for
the scholarship and possibly receiving an offer of temporary employment.

Reference letters from editors or newsroom supervisors are also strong
encouraged.

The scholarship is open to both French and English-speaking Aboriginal
Canadians.

• The application deadline is August 31st, 2016.
• Must be a Canadian citizen or Permanent Resident.
• 98% of our JPCs find meaningful work within six months of
completing their internship – acting as a proven bridge to employment.
• Internships are typically six-months in length with Agencies
such as: UNDP, IOM, UNODC, UNFPA, UNICEF, UN Women, UNHCR.
• The internships are unpaid -- successful candidates will have
to cover the associated costs.
• The majority of UNA-Canada's internship opportunities require
a completed bachelor degree. A few opportunities require applicants to
be currently enrolled at a recognized university, thus 4th year
students, may apply knowing there are limited opportunities available.
The majority of our successful candidates are current, or graduated,
grad students.
• Successful applicants will be deployed in January and
February, 2017 depending on the timelines of partner Agencies.

books on anthropology. Hosting the channel is a good way to bring the work
of anthropologists to the attention of large audiences. Interested parties

New Books in Anthropology is part of the New Books Network (
http://newbooksnetwork.com), a non-profit consortium of 70 author-interview
podcasts focused on academic books and promoting public education. The
network is operated and hosted by over 150 volunteers. It serves 20,000
episodes a day to a worldwide audience. The network's mission is outreach
and public education.

Submissions invited for 2016 Nadel Essay Prize for Early Career Scholars

The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology invites the submission of
papers for the Nadel Essay Prize

The Nadel Essay Prize celebrates excellence in ethnographic writing.
Ethnographically-based original papers are invited on social and
cultural anthropology relating to the Asia Pacific region, including
Australia. This annual prize, inaugurated in 2011 to commemorate sixty
years of Anthropology at the Australian National University, is named
after S.F. Nadel, who was appointed Foundation Professor of
Anthropology in 1951.

Submission Details

Anthropologists who have earned their doctorate within five years
prior to submission are invited to submit. Ethnographically-based
original papers are invited on social and cultural anthropology
relating to the Asia Pacific region, including Australia. The
submission should not be under consideration for publication
elsewhere, and should not be submitted to any other journal until the
outcome of the competition is known.

Word limit: 8000 words

Closing date for submissions: 31 October 2016.

The Prize

The winner of the prize will be announced in January 2017. The winner
will receive a prize of $250, a year's subscription to the journal and
promotion on the journal's website.

Jury

All papers submitted for the prize will be evaluated by the Editorial
Board. The jury will evaluate on the originality, quality of the
argumentation, conceptual clarity and overall readability. The jury
decision will be final. There is only one prize per year and the Board
reserves the right to award no prize if submitted material is not of
an appropriate standard. Shortlisted submissions for the prize will be
peer reviewed for publication in the journal.

The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology (TAPJA) is a leading refereed
scholarly journal that publishes social and cultural anthropological
research with a focus on the Asia and Pacific region, including
Australia. This region has been a crucible for significant advances in
the discipline and remains an important site for the development of
concepts and debates. The international focus of the journal
encompasses regional scholars and emerging voices from centres of
research in the region. Contributions may include digital media files,
including video, that are published in the online version. TAPJA
publishes review essays, reviews of books and multimedia products
(including music, films, and web sites) relevant to anthropological

Call for Nominations - The School for Advanced Research is now accepting nominations for the J.I. Staley Prize

The School for Advanced Research is now accepting nominations for the
$10,000 J.I. Staley Prize.

The School for Advanced Research (SAR) presents the J. I. Staley Prize to a
living author for a book that exemplifies outstanding scholarship and
writing in anthropology. The award recognizes innovative works that go
beyond traditional frontiers and dominant schools of thought in
anthropology and add new dimensions to our understanding of the human
species. It honors books that cross subdisciplinary boundaries within
anthropology and reach out in new and expanded interdisciplinary directions.

The School for Advanced Research, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, was
established in Santa Fe, New Mexico in 1907 as a center for the study of
the archaeology and ethnology of the American Southwest. Since 1967, the
scope of the School's activities has embraced a global perspective through
programs to encourage advanced scholarship in anthropology and related
social science disciplines and the humanities, and to facilitate the work
of Native American scholars and artists.

Past Staley Prize awardees include William Hanks, Joseph Masco, and S.
Lochlann Jain.
