Participating in CASCA2020 will allow students to benefit from the many opportunities for learning and socializing available at any CASCA conference, as well as additional opportunities provided by the 2020 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences including a number of "Big Thinking" keynotes offered by leading scholars and public figures whose work cross-cuts the humanities and social sciences, programming in public scholarship in the humanities and social sciences, a wide range of professional development and teaching workshops hosted by Congress, a reception hosted by the president of Western University, and the largest showcase of academic books in Canada.

"Doing/Undoing"

We live in dark times.  Populations around the world must now confront the ravages of a planetary climate crisis, a resurgence of global fascism, and the austere violence of neoliberalism.  It is all too easy to feel stuck in a crsis that never ends.  Yet, time and again, anthropology has shown, with its fine-tuned ethnographic sensibility and its care and commmitment to life as it is really lived, that people rarely give up and are never as powerless as those in power would have them believe.  Anthropology's method and approach can help us think of the present as an ongoing process, from which we, and those with whom we work, critically reflect not only on the present but also on the past and on possible futures.  What, then, can we say is really happening now, in these dark times?  How are people struggling to live amidst the danger and damage of escalating caststrophes?  How are they working to rebuild and repair their social, political and economic systems?  How are they rethinking the past, reimagining the future, and remaking the world in the present?  And what light can anthropology bring to these questions?

The 2020 CASCA conference invites us all to reflect on doing and undoing in many registers.  The pair of terms we have chosen as the theme brings to mind questions of the past (how we might undo past wrongs) and the future (how our actions work to bring about certain futures).  Yet we would like to encourage proposals that are also firmly situated in the ongoing present.  In short, we ask anthropologists to reflect more on how the present moment might be understood as a time and place of action (or inaction), as the site of many doings and undoings.  For it is ultimately in the now that we all dwell, even as we work to do something different, to make something happen, or to undo powerful systems of oppression and injustice.  How might we make the present, as a site of practice and praxis, available to us ethnographically?

Dual Keynote
We will have a Keynote event featuring two speakers, who together will help us think about how we might undo settler colonialism and anti-black racism.  Our speakers will be Ashanté Reese  (University of Marlyand, Baltimore County) and Zoe Todd (Carleton University).

Plenary Session
We will have a Plenary session addressing the theme of "Doing and Undoing Anthropology in Dark Times."  The Penary speakers will be: Adia Benton (Northwestern University), Dawn Martin-Hill (McMaster University), Deborah Thomas (University of Pennsylvania) and Bianca Williams (City University of New York).

Step 1: Join CASCA or renew your membership for 2020

Establish or renew your membership in CASCA here. For information on the advantages that come with being a member of CASCA and on CASCA's membership fee structure, click here.

Step 2: Submit a proposal through the CASCA submission portal

Propose a contribution (such as a paper, panel, workshop, roundtable, poster) to the CASCA 2020 conference.  See the CASCA 2020 Proposal instructions and Theme for additional information. Remember that you must be a member of CASCA for 2020 in order to propose a contribution to the CASCA 2020 conference. The deadline for proposing a contribution to CASCA 2020 is February 1, 2020.

Step 3: Register for Congress and the CASCA 2020 Conference

Participants and attendees at CASCA 2020 must register for the conference and pay their fees via the Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences website, here. You must register for both Congress and CASCA, and you can also register to participate in the meetings of any of the other 70+ scholarly associations (which may have membership requirements) that come together at Congress.

« Faire/défaire »

Nous vivons dans une sombre époque. Partout dans le monde, les peuples doivent affronter les ravages d'une crise climatique planétaire, la recrudescence du fascisme à l'échelle mondiale et la violente austérité du néolibéralisme. Il va sans dire qu'il est facile de se sentir coincés dans une crise sans fin. Pourtant, à de nombreuses reprises, grâce à sa sensibilité ethnographique raffinée et à son intérêt et engagement envers la vie telle qu'elle est réellement vécue, l'anthropologie a démontré que les peuples baissent rarement les bras et qu'ils ne sont jamais aussi impuissants que ce qu'essaient de leur faire croire les personnes au pouvoir. Les méthodes et approches anthropologiques peuvent nous aider à percevoir le temps présent comme un processus en cours à partir duquel nous, ainsi que nos collaborateurs, pouvons réfléchir de manière critique non seulement au temps présent comme tel, mais aussi au passé et aux possibles futurs. Ainsi, que pouvons-nous dire à propos de ce qu'il se passe actuellement dans cette sombre époque? Comment les gens luttent-ils pour survivre au milieu du danger et de la dévastation qu'engendrent les catastrophes sans cesse croissantes? Comment s'y prennent-ils pour rebâtir et réparer leurs systèmes sociaux, politiques et économiques? Comment repensent-ils le passé, réimaginent-ils le futur et refont-ils le monde au présent? Et qu'est-ce que l'anthropologie peut-elle mettre en lumière au sujet de ces enjeux?

Le colloque CASCA 2020 nous invite à réfléchir à nos façons de faire et de défaire sur plusieurs plans. Les termes composant le thème du colloque nous amènent à penser à des questions touchant le passé (comment défaire les erreurs du passé) et le futur (comment nos actions peuvent-elles découler vers certains futurs). Nous aimerions toutefois aussi encourager toute proposition solidement ancrée dans le temps présent. En résumé, nous invitons les anthropologues à examiner comment le temps présent peut être perçu comme un moment et un lieu d'action (ou d'inaction), un endroit où de nombreux éléments se font et se défont à la fois. Et, ultimement, c'est dans le temps présent que nous vivons toutes et tous, même lorsque nous nous efforçons de procéder différemment, de faire bouger les choses ou de défaire les puissants systèmes qui engendrent oppression et injustice. Donc, comment faire pour accéder au temps présent, en tant que lieu de pratique et de praxis, d'un point de vue ethnographique?

Double conférence principale

Nous aurons la chance d'avoir deux conférencières lors de la conférence principale au cours de laquelle conjointement, elles nous inviteront à réfléchir sur les manières de défaire le colonialisme et le racisme anti-Noirs. Deuxième étape : Soumission d'une proposition par l'entremise du portail de soumission de la CASCA

Soumettre une proposition (communication, panel, atelier, table ronde, communication par affiche) pour le colloque CASCA 2020. Pour de l'information supplémentaire, consulter les étapes à suivre pour soumettre une proposition dans le cadre du colloque CASCA 2020 ou la description du thème. Ne pas oublier qu'il faut être membre de la CASCA en 2020 pour être en mesure de soumettre une proposition pour le colloque CASCA 2020. La date limite pour soumettre une proposition est le 1 er février 2020.

Troisième étape : Inscription au congrès ainsi qu'au colloque CASCA 2020

Ceux et celles qui présenteront ou assisteront au colloque CASCA 2020 devront s'inscrire à l'événement et payer les frais d'inscription sur le site du Congrès des sciences humaines. Il faudra donc s'inscrire aux deux événements, soit au colloque et au congrès. Les participants auront également la chance de s'inscrire aux événements de l'une ou l'autre des plus de 70 associations savantes qui convergeront au congrès (une adhésion à ces associations pourrait être requise).
