Reminder - CASCA: Outstanding Graduating Anthropology Student Awards / Rappel - Prix d=?utf-8?Q?=E2=80=99excellence_des_=C3=A9tudiants?= finissants en anthropologie

**Outstanding Graduating Anthropology Student Awards**

CASCA is launching a new award to help Canadian university and college
anthropology departments recognize their top graduating Honours,
Master's, and PhD students.

Each spring, departments may select one top student at each level of
study who has graduated or will be graduating in that academic year to
receive the award. The selection process is up to the department, but
we hope that the strength of the student's anthropological research is
a priority in the decision.

This year, CASCA will be accepting nominations from now until April
27, 2017. To be eligible, students must graduate between June 15, 2016
and June 15, 2017. There is no cost for the institution and the
students need not be members of CASCA.

A certificate and letter of congratulations from our President will be
mailed to the Department for each award winner on or about May 15,
2017, for distribution to the graduands. Award winners will be
acknowledged publicly on the CASCA website as soon as possible
thereafter.

**Prix d'excellence des étudiants finissants en anthropologie**

La CASCA lance un nouveau prix afin d'aider les départements
d'anthropologie des universités et des collèges canadiens à
reconnaître leurs meilleurs étudiants finissants au baccalauréat
spécialisé, à la maîtrise et au doctorat.

Chaque printemps, les départements peuvent nommer un-e étudiant-e
excellent-e à chaque niveau d'études qui vient d'obtenir son diplôme
ou qui va l'obtenir dans l'année universitaire en cours. Le processus
de sélection est à la discrétion du département, mais nous espérons
que la qualité de la recherche anthropologique menée par l'étudiant-e
soit un critère prioritaire dans la sélection.

Cette année, la CASCA acceptera les candidatures dès maintenant
jusqu'au 27 avril, 2017. Pour être admissible au prix, l'étudiant-e

Cities and the Political Imagination

Keynote Speaker: Professor Rivke Jaffe

How can we recognize the political in the city? How might social
scientists engage with forms of politics outside of established sites
of research such as those associated with representative democracy or
collective mobilizations? This presentation suggests that new
perspectives on urban politics might be enabled by revisiting the
connections between sociology and cultural studies, and specifically
by combining long-term urban ethnography and cultural analysis.
Reading forms of creative expression in relation to power struggles in
and over urban space can direct our attention towards negotiations of
authority and political belonging that are often overlooked within the
social sciences. I explore the possibilities of such an approach by
focusing on the idea of the political imagination, and in particular
on how everyday practices are informed by imaginations of urban rule
and citizenship. Expressive culture generates both analytical and
normative frames, guiding everyday understandings of how power works,
where and in whose hands it is concentrated, and whether we see this
as just or unjust. Such frames can legitimize or delegitimize specific
distributions of resources and risks, and can normalize or
denaturalize specific structures of decision-making. Through a
discussion of popular music (hiphop, reggae and dancehall) and visual
culture, I consider how these forms of the imagination allow new
political subjectivities and actions to emerge and consolidate.

Rivke Jaffe is Professor of Cities, Politics and Culture in the
Department of Human Geography, Planning and International Development
Studies at the University of Amsterdam. Her research focuses primarily
on intersections of the urban and the political, and includes an
interest in topics such as organized crime, popular culture and
environmental pollution, drawing on fieldwork in Jamaica, Curaçao and
Suriname. She is currently leading a major research program on
public-private security assemblages in Kingston, Jerusalem, Miami,
Nairobi and Recife, studying transformations in governance and
citizenship in relation to hybrid forms of security provision. Her
publications include Concrete Jungles: Urban Pollution and the
Politics of Difference in the Caribbean (Oxford, 2016) and Introducing
Urban Anthropology (with Anouk de Koning, Routledge, 2016).

Cartography plays a critical role in struggles over the means of existence
in the global South. The intersection of map and territory can be a matter
of life and death for whole communities.

In this session, two members of the Development Planning Unit at UCL
present case studies of how different cartographies are mobilised around
struggles over material resources, including access to land, water and
housing.

Rita Lambert: Cartographic calculation and urbanization in risk in Lima

In her presentation, Rita will explore the deep entanglement of spatial
knowledge production and circulation in the planning of informal
settlements in Lima where maps are indispensable for the identification and
occupation of land. In this context, maps/plans are also compulsory for
claiming recognition and acquiring basic services from local municipalities
and service providers.

Rita will provide a critical overview of how a particular form of
cartographic calculation comes to be installed in the informal settlements
at the periphery of Lima, and identifies the main actants brought from the
past, present and future to structure a form of planning which intensifies
risk for the inhabitants of the area.

Cristian Olmos: The struggle for autonomy and the daily practices of water
use in the Atacama Desert, Chile

Everyday practices in relation to the use of water in the Atacama Desert in
Northern Chile are deeply embedded in the local culture and traditions of
the regions' rural communities. Cristian's presentation will explore daily
activities surrounding community management of water through canals and
irrigation schemes and how these practices are threatened by the efforts
of mining companies through their corporate social responsibility programs.

Participatory mapping, GPS walks, semi-structured interviews and drawings
are used to illustrate the different frameworks through which power
relations and the discursive narratives of the Atacama territory and the
communities´ water management.

About the speakers

Rita Lambert <https://iris.ucl.ac.uk/iris/browse/profile?upi=RCLAM63> is an
architect and urban development planner originally from Ethiopia. She is
currently a Teaching Fellow at The Bartlett Development Planning Unit - UCL
and a co-investigator on several research projects in Africa and Latin
America. Her current research focuses on the relationship between planning
and spatial knowledge production, manipulation and circulation, as well as
the development of tools which can be adopted by ordinary citizens to
navigate institutional barriers and expand the room for manoeuvre towards
socio-environmentally just urbanisation.

Cristian Olmos <https://www.researchgate.net/profile/Cristian_Olmos> is a
Chilean architect and urban designer with more than ten years of experience
in the public sector, in the field of improvement of urban spaces, housing
projects, reconstruction, recovery programs and policies in the context of
isolated, rural and aboriginal communities.
