CFP: Global Value Chains (GVC) and Labour Unfreedom Workshop,
including gendered dimensions of labour, at the University of
Sheffield, May 26-27, 2016

Since the economic crisis of 2008-2009, labour unfreedom has
intensified at the bottom end of the labour market. Working
conditions, remuneration, and collective bargaining rights have
stagnated or declined for large-swathes of
the low-waged workforce. At the same time, evidence from several
sectors suggests that the practices commonly known as ?forced labour?
have become widespread and are accelerating in global value chains.
Indeed, the era of austerity seems to have condensed labour market
opportunities and across the
bottom rungs of the labour market.

The expansion of Global Value Chains has significant and far-reaching
implications for labour and the labour process. Legal and illegal
forms of exploitation are more porous and overlapping than is usually
acknowledged in scholarship and policy. There is an urgent need to
understand the nexus and
interactions between forced labour and 'regular' exploitation within
global value chains. Recent research on global value chains (GVC) and
global commodity chains (GCCs) has begun to remedy the 'labour
deficit' within those paradigms. Yet, we maintain that there is much
to be done to understand the dimensions of labour unfreedom and
degradation within and along value chains.

Bringing together scholars of both the 'normal' labour market and of
unfree labour (including forced labour and human trafficking), this
workshop will aim to build a comprehensive understanding of recovery's
wide-ranging
effects on low-waged and vulnerable workers. Key questions include:

- How can the GVC/GCC and Labour Process Theory paradigms help us to
understand and represent the links between unfree labour, legal
exploitation and the degradation of labour within value chains?

- How can we best understand the gender dimensions of labour unfreedom
and degradation within and along supply chains?

- Moving beyond orthodox indicators of labour market performance (such as
unemployment and GDP), what evidence bases can be used to empirically
analyze and capture the full set of labour market challenges?

Overall, the workshop aims to generate new thinking about the overlaps
and boundaries between unfree labour and normalized exploitation
within global value chains. We welcome papers from a variety of
disciplines across the
social sciences.

Thanks to generous funding from the UK Economic and Social Research
Council, there will be no registration fee for the workshop and meals
will be provided. Limited funds are available to support travel.

Convened by: University of Sheffield Management School's Work,
Organization & Employment Research Center (WOERRC) and Sheffield
Political Economy
Research Institute (SPERI).

REVEAL Indigenous Art Awards - The Hnatyshyn Foundation

The Foundation will begin accepting applications starting March 1st, 2016.

The deadline for submissions is June 1st.

The Awards are intended to recognize emerging and established
Indigenous artists working in traditional or contemporary practices.
The awards will be given in six artistic categories including dance,
music, theatre, literature, film/video (media arts), and visual
arts/fine craft.

AAA Community Engagement Grants

From the AAA CFP for Community Engagement Grants:

"AAA Community Engagement Grants (CE Grants) provide up to $2,000 for AAA
Sections to rent offsite space for events that engage communities and
extend Anthropology's reach beyond the annual meeting. There are no
restrictions on the kinds of events that may be proposed, but the funds
must be used only for rental of space, and the event must be open to all
AAA meeting attendees."

CE Grant proposals should include the following information: the title of
the proposed event, a description of the event, the location of that event,
the community partners who will be involved in/help to coordinate the
event, the names and pertinent for contact persons at the event site, the
names and contact information for the AAA/SMA organizer(s), and the amount
of funds requested for the rental of community space. Prospective event
organizer(s) are encouraged to include a rationale for the importance of
the proposed activity, as part of their event description.

Please send CE Grant proposals to the SMA Program Chair and Co-Chair: Mary
Anglin (manglin@uky.edu<mailto:manglin@uky.edu>) and Athena McLean (
mclea1ah@cmich.edu<mailto:mclea1ah@cmich.edu>) no later than March 28, 2016.

The Program Committee Co-Chairs will review the applications and convey our
recommendations to the SMA President, Elisa Sobo, in advance of the AAA
deadline for Sections to submit a proposal: April 1, 2016. Applicants will
be notified about the status of their proposals by the AAA deadline.

Rappel : Les étudiants ont jusqu'au 15 mars pour soumettre une
proposition de communication par affiche en vue du colloque CASCA/SANA
2016.

Les présentations d'étudiants sous forme de posters:
Les étudiants en fin de premier cycle ainsi que les étudiants en
maîtrise sont encouragés à présenter un résumé de leurs projets de
recherche et de leurs résultats sous forme de posters. Les résumés
pour ces présentations ne devraient pas excéder 100 mots. Pour plus

The Rockefeller Foundation is pleased to announce the annual spring
competition for academic writing residency applications at the
Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center.

As a Bellagio alumni you have experienced the unique international and
interdisciplinary community brought together at the Center and the
incredible opportunity a Bellagio residency presents to individuals
who want to engage in a month of focused, self-directed work, while
being exposed to a broad spectrum of new thinking and ideas in the
serene atmosphere of Lake Como. We hope you will support our effort to
spread the word about the latest competition which opened on March 1,
2016 with a final deadline for applications on May 2, 2016. Applicants
accepted during this open call will be awarded residencies between
