Phillips Fund Grants for Native American Research

Scope

For research in Native American linguistics and ethnohistory, focusing
on the continental United States and Canada. Given for a maximum of
one year from date of award to cover travel, tapes, and consultants'
fees.

Eligibility

Applicants may be graduate students pursuing either a master's or a
doctoral degree; postdoctoral applicants are also eligible.

Award

From $1,000 to $3,500.

Deadline

March 1; notification in May.

Since January 2014 the Embodied Borders research project, based at
the Mediterranean Laboratory of Sociology (LAMES) of Aix-Marseille
Université, has looked critically at humanitarian interventions and
policies addressing victims of sex trafficking and gender/sexual
minority asylum seekers in the UK and France. The project examines
the workings of 'sexual humanitarianism', a concept used to
understand and represent the humanitarian governance of undesirable
migrants that are framed as vulnerable according to their gender,
sexual orientation and/or behaviours.
What is at stake when sexuality/gender are rendered an apparatus of
rights-claims in the context of migration control?
How do sexuality and gender-related moral panics function when
migrant populations are specifically targeted?
How do the neoliberal imperatives of guaranteeing freedom and making
the State secure co-exist in processes of filtering populations at
the borders?
Which artistic, political, policymaking, documentary, and fictional
representations naturalise and operationalise sexual humanitarianism?
Throughout the two-day workshop at the MuCEM (Marseille) we will
engage with artists, filmmakers, scholars, and activists whose work
is focused on sexuality, gender and migration issues.

New Centre for Urban Research on Austerity Launch
18-19 November, 2015

Dear Colleagues

I am delighted to invite you to the launch of our De Montfort
University Centre for Urban Research on Austerity on Wednesday 18th
and Thursday 19th November – see http://www.dmu.ac.uk/cura.
The launch will be an opportunity to discuss cutting-edge research on
austerity and related concepts such as crisis, resistance,
resilience, renaissance and transformation, and to help us set our
research priorities for the Centre. Our keynote speakers are:

Professor Erik Swyngedouw: "Politicising Urban Politics: Discontent,
Disagreement and the Struggle for Democracy"

And,

Professor Karel Williams: "Outsourcing: the Co-dependence of
Government and Organised Money"

We will post the full programme in September. If you would like to

Nadel Essay Prize for Ethnographic Writing, Asia-Pacific Region, 2015

The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology invites the submission of
papers for the Nadel Essay Prize


The Nadel Essay Prize celebrates excellence in ethnographic writing.
Ethnographically-based original papers are invited on social and
cultural anthropology relating to the Asia Pacific region, including
Australia. This annual prize, inaugurated in 2011 to commemorate
sixty years of Anthropology at the Australian National University, is
named after S.F. Nadel, who was appointed Foundation Professor of
Anthropology in 1951.


Submission Details

Anthropologists who have earned their doctorate within five years
prior to submission are invited to submit. Ethnographically-based
original papers are invited on social and cultural anthropology
relating to the Asia Pacific region, including Australia. The
submission should not be under consideration for publication
elsewhere, and should not be submitted to any other journal until the
outcome of the competition is known.

Word limit: 8000 words

Closing date for submissions: 31 October 2015.

Papers must be submitted online at:

The Prize

The winner of the prize will be announced in January 2016. The winner
will receive a prize of $250, a year's subscription to the journal
and promotion on the journal's website.


Jury

All papers submitted for the prize will be evaluated by the Editorial
Board. The jury will evaluate on the originality, quality of the
argumentation, conceptual clarity and overall readability. The jury
decision will be final. There is only one prize per year and the
Board reserves the right to award no prize if submitted material is
not of an appropriate standard. Shortlisted submissions for the prize
will be peer reviewed for publication in the journal.


The Asia Pacific Journal of Anthropology (TAPJA) is a leading
refereed scholarly journal that publishes social and cultural
anthropological research with a focus on the Asia and Pacific region,
including Australia. This region has been a crucible for significant
advances in the discipline and remains an important site for the
development of concepts and debates. The international focus of the
journal encompasses regional scholars and emerging voices from
centres of research in the region. Contributions may include digital
media files, including video, that are published in the online
version. TAPJA publishes review essays, reviews of books and
multimedia products (including music, films, and web sites) relevant

2017 Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist Scholarship

The University of Chicago Press and Signs are pleased to announce the
competition for the 2017 Catharine Stimpson Prize for Outstanding Feminist
Scholarship. Named in honor of the founding editor of Signs: Journal of
Women in Culture and Society, the Catharine Stimpson Prize is designed to
recognize excellence and innovation in the work of emerging feminist
scholars.

The Catharine Stimpson Prize is awarded biennially to the best paper in an
international competition. Leading feminist scholars from around the globe
will select the winner. The prizewinning paper will be published in Signs,
and the author will be provided an honorarium of $1,000. All papers
submitted for the Stimpson Prize will be considered for peer review and
possible publication in Signs.

Eligibility: Feminist scholars in the early years of their careers (fewer
than seven years since receipt of the terminal degree) are invited to
submit papers for the Stimpson Prize. This includes current graduate
students. Papers may be on any topic that falls under the broad rubric of
interdisciplinary feminist scholarship. Submissions must be no longer than
10,000 words (including notes and references) and must conform to the
guidelines for Signs contributors (
http://signsjournal.org/for-authors/author-guidelines/).

Deadline for Submissions: March 1, 2016.
