Engaging Refugee Narratives explores how narratives by and about
refugees and migrants are disseminated, how ideas become shared and
meaningful to a larger group, how influence builds. The three sessions
of this event focus on digital forms of communication and online
archiving, graphic memoir and cartooning, varied forms of live
performance of telling stories. Over two days at University College
London, talks, demonstrations, interactive workshops, and roundtable
discussions are led by researchers, artists, writers, activists and
practitioners. All sessions are open to the public.

This event, the third in our series, recognizes the need to signal the
importance of engagement with the narratives not only of refugees but
the many others whose lives are in transition. Ultimately we hope that
such engagement and interventions pave the way towards social
transformations.

About this event
This special event seeks to explore a central paradox confronting
industrial society, if not humanity, as it heads into the twenty-first
century: the collective ability of humans, or of some humans at any
rate, to fundamentally transform the Earth and its life-supporting
capability is not matched by an ability to act collectively and
concertedly in a way that supports those capacities over the
foreseeable future. Our motivation to invite a select group of
scholars who are, each in their own way, directly engaged with this
conundrum, emerges from the understanding that the Anthropocene, with
its multiple, existential, urgent, cascading and concatenating crises,
challenges many of the core categories and assumptions of the various
disciplines represented in the School of Anthropology and
Conservation, and which shape and guide our research on
human-environment interactions. Drawn from diverse disciplinary
starting points, each speaker will respond to the provocation that the
Anthropocene, formulated in terms of governance and planetary-scale
problems and processes, signals not just a new geological epoch, but a
new epoch of thought and politics, with its attendant epistemic,
methodological, institutional, normative and legal dimensions.

This presentation focuses on the archival traces left behind by the
Selkman, Onas, and Yamanas, the Indigenous peoples who used to inhabit
Tierra del Fuego and Southern Patagonia and who were obliterated by
political, economic, and cultural violence and disease. I am
particularly interested in the phantasmatic returns of their histories
and voices in the works by anthropologists, writers, photographers,
and filmmakers, who think about modernity as the result of the
interplay between mimesis and alterity.

Connecting Sentiments, Separating Worlds: New Media and Transnational
Families in the Colombian Context

My project aims to establish an account of the digital practices
between transnational parents and the children they leave behind and
how these practices alter the ways they express emotions and
communicate at distance. These methods of communication, in turn,
affect how the parents construct and frame their new experiences and
their existing familial relationship. This project bridges many areas
of Anthropology. In this instance, I must establish semiotic patterns
for these channels of digital communication, as they are essential in
the construction of ideas of self, identity and the way that a person
reflects upon their emotional life. It is also an interdisciplinary
study, which integrates Social anthropology; New Media; Migration and
Transnationalism; Colombia's Kinship; Anthropology of Childhood;
Anthropology of emotions. This study will compare and develop their
work to establish a new theory of emotions through the digital age.
