5th Conference of the Australian Association for Pacific Studies - 2014

CFP

OCEANSCAPES: cooperation across the Pacific
DATE: 22-26 April, 2014
WHERE: University of Sydney

The Pacific Ocean covers one-third of the earth's surface and contains
thousands of islands. Yet, as Epeli Hau'ofa's seminal paper about the 'Sea
of Islands' shows, oceans are not a barrier, but highways to contact. This
conference employs the concept of Oceanscapes from The Pacific Oceanscape
Vision, introduced by President Anote Tong of Kiribati and endorsed by the
Pacific Island Forum. It is a vision for cooperative conservation action
and adaption to issues of climate change. With a population just over 10
million and an area that stretches from Australia to Asia, Canada and the
Americas, peoples of the Pacific region are adept at movement, contact and
working together.

The Australian Association for Pacific Studies seeks to bring researchers
across Oceanscapes to share their knowledge and experience; to benefit the
peoples of the Pacific region, and to advance scholarship about the places
between the better-known American and Asian rim countries.

This conference focusses on the cooperative nature of relations across the
Pacific and the necessarily cooperative partnerships that allow for
effective delivery of programs in health, education, trade and development
while maintaining the integrity of the cultural diversity that is the
hallmark of Pacific island nations and overseas territories.

Alterity, Intersubjectivity, Ethics: A multi-disciplinary workshop - September 2013 - University of Cambridge

Alterity, Intersubjectivity, Ethics: A multi-disciplinary workshop exploring
theoretical directions for the study of ethics and morality

Monday 30th September 2013, 9am – 5pm

Mill Lane Lecture Rooms, University of Cambridge

8 Mill Lane, Cambridge, CB2 1RX

Website and registration: otherethics.wordpress.com

Contact: alterityandethicsworkshop@gmail.com

The 'ethical turn' across the arts and humanities has taken its place in
social and cultural anthropology primarily as a way to address
long-standing questions of human agency within cultural and political
systems. Anthropologists have been developing their own take on questions
of ethics and morality in ways drawing largely from neo-Aristotelian and
Foucauldian theorisations.

Theories of subjectivity, gendered or sexual difference, affect, and the
'post-human' have become prominent in investigations that question the
bounds of the self/subject, and the ways in which we can conceptualise it
as socially or politically emplaced. Building on this emerging literature,
but cautious of some of its ontological assumptions, the premise behind
this workshop questions the prioritisation of certain notions of the
'self' over inquiries into the nature of the ethical 'subject'.

This workshop seeks to ask what such theories, and different disciplines'
elaborations and critiques of them, can usefully lend current
conceptualisations of ethics and morality.

The keynote lecture entitled 'Attunement, Fidelity, Dwelling: A Critique of
Metaphysical Humanism' will be delivered by Associate Professor Jarrett
Zigon of the University of Amsterdam.

Workshop format:

The aim of the workshop is primarily to exchange ideas across disciplines
and with different theoretical and ethnographic references. The day is
structured so as to promote as much discussion as possible, rather than
presenting polished research results. The workshop will be divided into
four thematic sessions addressing the themes of:

• Feminism and the question of the other

• Ethics, violence and politics

• Post-humanism and animal/human relations

• Affect and the ethics of noise

Each of the four sessions will be structured around a research paper, to be
pre-circulated to all workshop participants, which will form the starting
point for the discussion.

Workshop preparation

After registering participants will receive drafts of the research papers in
advance for each of the four sessions and are strongly encouraged to read
these prior to attending the workshop. The workshop welcomes participants
across academic disciplines keen to engage in lively discussions and raise
questions and ideas during the day.

Questions to be discussed during the workshop:

• What analysis of attachments and detachments across sameness and
difference do
concepts such as affect enable or disable?

• What are the challenges to more recent feminist theories that attempt to
show how ethics is suggested and solicited by an ontology of
interdependency between people?

• How do lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex subjectivities
complicate ethical and political responses to deeply ingrained normative
practices?

• In light of the central place of 'the Other' in anthropological
concerns, how can feminist and other theories of alterity inflect
anthropological theories of ethics?

• How do questions of politics enter into, impact upon, or undermine our
theorisations of the ethical?

• Can claims of relationality and acknowledgment of difference be shown to
be fundamentally non-violent? How do we continue to address violence
within ethics?

• How can psychoanalytic theories addressing subject/object, or self/other,
relations, help us to theorise the space in which ethical subjectivity is
formed?

• Do contemporary theories of affect push us beyond concepts of
'relationality' or
'intersubjectivity' in theorisations of ethics?

• Can Levinasian theories of ethics as the pre-subjective relation to the
Other inform ethnographic inquiries into ethical relationality?

• What other approaches from philosophy or other disciplines can inform
the study of ethics and morality?

• Do these theoretical approaches invite us to question the idea of
intersubjectivity as the place of ethical relationality?

UN Gender and Climate Alliance - Call for COP19 Gender Submissions

Call for COP19 Gender Submissions -
Conference of Parties (COP)19

mailto:marita.manley@giz.de
From: Manley, Marita GIZ FJ

Dear all,

At COP18 parties to the convention adopted a 'gender decision'.

Decision 23/CP.18: Promoting gender balance and improving the
participation of women in UNFCCC negotiations and in the representation of
Parties in bodies established pursuant to the Convention or the Kyoto
Protocol.

http://unfccc.int/gender_and_climate_change/items/7516.php

Parties and observer organisations are invited to submit their views by
Sept 2nd on options and ways to advance women's participation and ensure
more effective climate change policy that addresses the needs of women and
men equally. Obviously achieving more balanced representation is just one
aspect of ensuring that the needs and priorities of both men and women are
addressed but it is a first step and has given the topic a bit more of a
profile this year.

It would be great to get to see a number of PICs making submissions on
this topic.

The Global Gender and Climate Alliance are able to provide support on the
topic if countries are interested in making submissions. Please contact
Nathalie Eddy - nathalie@gender-climate.org with any specific requests.

And I'm sure other members of this network may also be able to offer
support and inputs to drafts.

The government of Iceland have already sent in a submission on this topic
and it is available online at
http://unfccc.int/documentation/submissions_from_parties/items/5916.php

The GGCA have made some suggestions of what could be included in the
submission – they can be very brief.

1. PRACTICE - What actions have you taken to implement gender
equality in your national climate change policy and practice?

2. CHALLENGES - What challenges have you faced in implementing
gender-sensitive climate policy and in pursuing gender balance in the UNFCCC
regime?

3. NEEDS - What tools, resources, or training would be most valuable
to better support and facilitate your progress towards gender-sensitive
climate policy?

A number of other submissions are invited including on climate finance –
full list available here.

CFP: Structural Drivers of HIV, Cape Town

Conference: Structural Drivers of HIV, Cape Town, South Africa

3rd STRUCTURAL DRIVERS OF HIV CONFERENCE: Contextualising the Structural
Drivers of HIV

5 & 6 December 2013, The Cullinan Hotel, Cape Town, South Africa

Because people and contexts differ, structural approaches to HIV do not
work the same way or have the same effect in all populations and settings.
Therefore, responses need to take into account drivers of local epidemics.
It is against this backdrop that the 3rd Structural Drivers of HIV
Conference will take place to discuss, learn from and reappraise the
contextual complexities that researchers and programmers across the HIV
and AIDS field wrestle with when planning and implementing HIV programmes.

Registration, call for abstracts and scholarship applications are now
open. Click here for more information and application details:

http://www.heard.org.za/workshops/3rd-structural-drivers-of-hiv-conference

Register before 30 August and receive a 20% discount! Abstract submissions
close 13
September 2013.

Topics to be discussed include, pathways of risk and the interaction of
different structural drivers of HIV in different contexts, structural
approaches to HIV programmes, poverty, environmental and economic stress,
employment and HIV, gender inequality and violence, transactional sex and
gender relations in sub-Saharan Africa, new HIV technologies, including
medical male circumcision and treatment as prevention.
